Peak Pilgrimage walk.Ilam to Eyam & camp.
Another long distance walk this week in the peak district. This time i'm doing the peak pilgrimage walk,a 39 mile route from Ilam to Eyam..Initially in days gone by the pilgrimage was a spiritual journey for those on a quest to find god consisting of 3 parts, the journey, destination & the return home with the hopes on the return home you would be more receptive & open to god giving you a renewed strength & change to make life better,in some cases a life changing spiritual experience finding the christian faith.
Now...although i'm not really a religious person & this walk hasn't really brought me any closer to the big man upstairs it really has given me an insight into beliefs & all that type of stuff,as along the walk you visit 13 churches to if you wish stamp an official peak pilgrimage guide that i purchased prior to the walk.I will keep this book as a momento of the walk along with the certificate you receive at the end of the walk at Eyam church upon showing of your'e book with fully completed stamps. It really has been great to witness all these different churches & villages ranging in times from different centuries & seeing the evidence left from many hundreds of years gone by from our ancestors.
The real motivation for me iv'e taken from this walk is yet more discovery of such amazing countryside, scenery & history which is out there for all of us to enjoy. So if your'e on a pilgrim your'e self or just out to discover more of our amazing land as i do & hopefully show it to you people in the best way i can,get out there & enjoy it..

Ilam, Staffordshire Peak District, UK road bike ride
A fantastic day out in two of the counties straddled by the Peak District; this is the longest and hilliest ride (so far) this year.
This is quite possibly my favourite circuit in the Peak; it’s the fourth time I have cycled it, but only once a year. It’s always good barometer of my current form!
This is where I stopped for lunch:

Peak District Drive....Dove Head to Ilam.
Peak District National Park is in Central England. Steep limestone valleys like Dovedale, with its famed stepping stones, and Lathkill Dale characterise the park’s southern area, which is known as White Peak.

Beautiful Village in the Manifold Valley with what I call 'Gingerbread Houses' that look like they came out of a Hans Christian Anderson story
Ilam is best known as the location of the neo-Gothic Ilam Hall, a stately home built in the 1820s, and now a youth hostel owned by the National Trust. It is set in large parklands that are open to visitors.
Ilam is about 4 miles from Ashbourne at the entrance to the scenic Manifold Valley. Ilam is very picturesque, with its Swiss chalet style houses and matching school house. It also lies close to the popular Dovedale valley.
While most of the buildings in the village are from the past two centuries, Ilam dates from Saxon times or earlier.
It is in the Chapel of St Bertram, built in 1618 by the Meverell, Port and Hurt families, that the remains and shrine of the St Bertram (or Bertelin) can be found. St Bertram was an 8th-century son of a Mercian king who renounced his royal heritage for prayer and meditation after his wife and child were killed by wolves. He is said to have converted many to Christianity, and his shrine became a point of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages, it being reputed to be able to work miraculous cures.
Wingfield Cromwell, 2nd Earl of Ardglass is buried here.

[NT] Ilam Park. Derbyshire. A place to discover! Jan 2018
Have visted this place a few times over the years and it never fails to impress or delight. There is so much to see and enjoy. On this occasion when we visited, towards the end of January on a cold late afternoon, the views and history surrounded us. Starting off looking across to Thorpe Cloud, on to Ilam Hall and Dovedale House, down the winding path to the River Manifold, along the river bank to St Bertram's Bridge, then finally a stroll back to Church of the Holy Cross (A rare look inside this religious building). By this time it was getting dark and becoming colder. A beautiful place, it’s clear to see why there are thousands of visitors throughout the year.
(Ilam park covers almost 160 acres spreading over both county boundaries of Derbyshire and Staffordshire.)
0:00 Thorpe Cloud.
Is a limestone hill, 287 meters high, overlooking Ilam, across the Dale and the Midland plain.
1:43 & 13:10 Ilam Hall and Gardener's Cottage.
It’s a Tudor Gothic style Grade II* Listed Building which dates back to 1821. Was once a country house then in 1934 Sir Robert McDougal bought the hall and gave it to the National Trust to become a Youth Hostel and it is still run as such today. The grounds are open to the public, and are a starting point for one of the prettiest river walks in the area.
3:12 Dovedale House (adjacent to Ilam Hall)
The former vicarage, Dovedale House is now run as a residential Youth centre. It's a Grade II Listed Building dating back to 1840.
07:37 Path to the the River Manifold.
4:17 & 9:37 St Bertram's Bridge, Ilam.
Grade II Listed single span bridge that crosses the River Manifold, has its roots back in the 18th century. The bridge’s name comes from the association with St. Bertram, a Saxon saint whose shrine is in the nearby church, Church of the Holy Cross.
13:41 Church of the Holy Cross, Ilam.
It's a Grade I Listed Building that was built in 1618 with the base of the tower dating back to the 13th Century. A rare look inside this religious building.

Peak District - Dovedale to Milldale walk 19/05/2018
One of the best walks in Peak District, enjoy!
Peak District..White to Dark Peak walk & wildcamp.
In 2012, TrailZilla teamed up with Country Walking Magazine to create a brand-new White to Dark Long Distance Path - Peak District National Park walk, celebrating the very best of the Peak District. Celebrating the 25th birthday of Britain’s best-selling walking magazine, the White to Dark Way is a two /three-day walk from the White Peak to the Dark Peak. It aims to be the first major walking trail dedicated to linking the Peak District’s two 'halves', across terrain ranging from meadows, woods and farmland to wild moorland and gritstone edges, going from Bakewell to Hope. The route includes Monsal Head, Cressbrook Dale, Litton, Eyam, Stanage Edge and Win Hill.
My aim was to do the walk over two day's with an overnight wildcamp roughly half way along the route.
Day one i set off from Bakewell & arrived at sir william hill where i pitched for the night.13.5 mile in 4 hour 51 mins,2,954 ft total ascent at that point.
Day two after packing up i set off from sir william hill & arrived in hope 15.9 mile,5 hour 54 mins,3,191 ft total ascent later to finish the route.
In total over two days i walked 29.3 mile in 10 hour 45 mins walking time & a total 6,145 ft of ascent.
A stunning route showcasing the natural buety of two very different landscapes, the white peak easy walking vast open green & limestone landscape. The dark peak harder walking valleys & millstone edges but equally as stunning with the views all around.
A route i can highly recommend.

Camping in Ilam and climbing Thorpe Cloud
We spent a wet but fun weekend with friends camping at the National Trust campsite in Ilam in the Peak District. We climbed Thorpe Cloud, crossed the stepping stones at Dovedale and dried ourselves out in the pub.

Glastonbury Not Just A Music Festival | King Arthur & The Holy Grail | England Travel Vlog 14
Glastonbury is not just a music festival, it is a hippy New Age town in Somerset well worth a visit. Todays travel vlog we visited the Glastonbury Tor and Glastonbury Abbey. The mythology of King Arthur and the Holy grail is fascinating and the atmosphere of the quirky town centre make this a New Age dream. Apparently even Jesus Christ himself visited the town with Joseph of Arimathea.
