Hong Kong’s 130-year-old Peak Tram is on track for a major revamp
Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here:
The world’s steepest funicular railway, Hong Kong’s Peak Tram sweeps passengers from the busy city streets in the Central district to the highest points on Victoria Peak in only six minutes.
In service for more than 130 years, the Peak Tram is about to get a multi-million dollar upgrade, including replacement of carriages. Current carriages can handle up to 120 passengers at a time, but new larger ones will have a capacity of 210. The change will require replacement of all haulage and control systems, installation of new rails, as well as reinforcement of track foundations and bridges along the tram route. The renovation will cost HK$684 million (US$87.1 million) and is expected to be completed in early 2021.
The work will force Peak Tram service to be suspended during two periods, with the first one starting on April 23, 2019, and lasting approximately two to three months.

PEAK TRAM & SKY TERRACE EXPERIENCE | HONGKONG
According to a study* by The University of Hong Kong, passengers riding on The Peak Tram will experience a spectacular visual illusion; when going uphill, the high rises of the right ride of the tram appear to fall toward The Peak. This Peak Tram illusion is induced by a change of the subjective vertical caused by the tilted visual environment and reclining body position of observers inside the tram. *The study is published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science in 2013.

3. Operation
-opened on May 30th, 1888
-1.3 km or 0.8 miles in length up an elevation of 1,300 feet
-The tram railway is so steep buildings will look like they are an angle going up. The steepness varies from 4 degrees to 27 degrees
-17,000 daily ridership which is mostly tourists. Almost no one uses this tram as a method of daily transportation except some elderly who live at the first stop of the tram.
-6 stations
2. History
-From the mid 1800 to 1900 the population on Hong Kong’s was growing on the Peak. After the completion of the Peak Hotel further interest grew in making a faster method of traveling up the mountain.
-A clever Scotsman, Alexander Findlay Smith devised a way of having a steel cable pull a train car up the mountain and the Peak Tram was born.
-Between 1908 to 1949, 2 seats at the front of the tram displayed a plaque “This seat is reserved for His Excellency, the Governor” and was not filled until 2 minutes before departure. This was just in case the Governor showed up unannounced.
-Back i those days the tram was divided into 1st, 2nd and 3rd class each with corresponding payments just like on airline flights. Today those classes don’t exist, it’s all 1 class first come first serve getting seats.
1. The Peak Tower
-At the top of the Peak tram is a shopping center, restaurants and the Stylish Peak Tower building with rooftop 360 observation deck. I should note if you are looking to go up on the observation deck it’ll cost $10-15 based on the conversion rate which is paid at the base of an up escalator
-now if you’re a rebel you can just wait till someone isn’t looking and run up the down escalator.. but you didn’t hear that from me.
-The Peak tower was constructed in 1972 then renovated in 1997 and further renovated in 2005.
-There are plenty of walking trails and incredible views every direction.
-The landscape can be very steep so wear good shoes, one thing to note, tourists shouldn’t go talking about at dawn or dusk as this is the time when mosquitoes are out.
-Mosquitoes in Hong Kong carry Dengue Fever, a horrible illness that feels like the dark lord himself is constantly punching you in the stomach. This illness is so bad that is been known to kill the elderly. Think food poisoning just 10x worse.

Peak Tram Ride along with stunning views of Hong Kong Island and Victoria Harbor from The Peak (太平山). We are visiting Victoria Peak. One thing I find fascinating about Hong Kong is that they use bamboo scaffolding to make buildings. Unbelievable and it works. So we're on the tram now and we're traveling all the way up to Victoria Peak and it's really steep. Well, well what do you think? We're so high up it's scary. I'm not going near the edge.

So we took the tram all the way up and it was a bit of a scary ride because it is super steep and you're kind of leaning back in your seat kind of holding on to the rail in front of you. But we survived and the views are pretty impressive. Like once we got up here we had to go through a mall like just several levels and now we're up here on top and it's a beautiful sunny day. It's nice. How many time have you been here? This is my second time here. My first time here was 2008. My very first time I went backpacking, so that's a long time ago. Has it changed a lot? Well, there is some new buildings obviously yeah. So the skyline has changed a little bit but when I came before it was late at night and this place was packed. It's nice to come around this of day between say four and six o'clock because there is hardly anyone here. We can find little quiet areas to just rest in the shade. It's great. Hong Kong without a doubt has the most impressive skyline I've ever seen. Just phenomenal.

The tram first began transporting people to the highest points of the Hong Kong Island in 1926, and it is now a very popular tourist attraction. If you wish to get to the Victoria Peak, this is the best way to do it.
Sadly, due to the space limitations of the tram, there are usually long queues taking up to an hour. The queues form in both directions – on the way to the top and on the way back. However, the journey is worth it as you will get an amazing view of Hong Kong, provided that the weather is nice.
You can either get the regular tram ticket or the Peak Tram Sky Pass which combines both – the tram and the Sky Terrace entrance ticket. Sky Terrace is a building located at the top of the Peak from where you can see the whole island.

The Peak Tram (Chinese: 山頂纜車; Cantonese Yale: Sāandéng Laahmchē) is a funicular railway in Hong Kong, which carries both tourists and residents to the upper levels of Hong Kong Island. Running from Garden Road Admiralty to Victoria Peak via the Mid-Levels, it provides the most direct route and offers good views over the harbour and skyscrapers of Hong Kong.

The above excerpt is from thepeak.com.hk
With some seven million visitors every year, the Peak is a major tourist attraction of Hong Kong.[4] It has views of the city and its waterfront. The viewing deck also has coin-operated telescopes that the visitors can use to enjoy the cityscape. The number of visitors led to the construction of two major leisure and shopping centres, the Peak Tower and the Peak Galleria, situated adjacent to each other.
The Peak Tower incorporates the upper station of the Peak Tram, the funicular railway that brings passengers up from the St. John's Cathedral in Hong Kong's Central district, whilst the Peak Galleria incorporates the bus station used by the Hong Kong public buses and green minibuses on the Peak. The Peak is also accessible by taxi and private car via the circuitous Peak Road, or by walking up the steep Old Peak Road from near the Zoological Botanical Gardens or the Central Green Trail from Hong Kong Park. The nearest MTR station is Central.[5]
Victoria Peak Garden is located on the site of Mountain Lodge, the Governor's old summer residence, and is the closest publicly accessible point to the summit. It can be reached from Victoria Gap by walking up Mount Austin Road, a climb of about 150 metres (490 ft). Another popular walk is the level loop along Lugard and Harlech Roads, giving good views of the entire Hong Kong Harbour and Kowloon, as well as Lantau and Lamma Islands, encircling the summit at the level of the Peak Tower.[6]
There are several restaurants on Victoria Peak, most of which are located in the two shopping centres. However, the Peak Lookout Restaurant, is housed in an older and more traditional building which was originally a spacious house for engineers working on the Peak Tramway. It was rebuilt in 1901 as a stop area for sedan chairs, but was re-opened as a restaurant in 1947.
In addition to being a major tourist attraction for Hong Kong, The Peak is also the summit of Hong Kong's property market. At the peak of The Peak, properties are more expensive than anywhere else in the world. Most of the super-rich in Hong Kong – including Cheung Kong (Holdings) chairman Li Ka-shing and the Kwok brothers of Sun Hung Kai Properties (except, in the case of Thomas, while accommodated at Stanley Prison[7]) – live in detached houses in Island South or The Peak. On 12 January 2014, a Barker Road property sold at over HK$100,000 (US$13,000) per square foot for HK$690 million

Hong Kong Victoria Peak Tram: Highest Point on Hong Kong Island
At its most authentic, Hong Kong projects a vibrant duality, an ambition of opposites that work together in concert, which are the special ingredients of harmony. Here, views of steel and glass pointing to the future rest against low stone temples coiling with the incense of deeply rooted traditions. The peak tram, which trundles to the top of the highest point on Hong Kong Island, is an emblem of the city's blending of beauty and practicality, vision and deed.
