BLACK PEARL FARMING IN THE SEYCHELLES
(18 Jun 2012) LEADIN
Black pearl cultivation is a family business for the Seychelles' only pearl farm.
The rarity of the marine gems make them a prize worth diving.
STORYLINE
The rare black pearl is one of the ocean's most-prized jewels.
Pristine waters are an essential and indispensable condition for cultivating pearls.
Blessed with clean waters, the Seychelles archipelago also has a local oyster, the Black Lip Oyster, that produces these singular black pearls.
Established in 1995, the ocean farm is located in a marine national park.
The floating lines on which the oysters are cultivated are situated in the waters between the granitic islands of Praslin and Curieuse.
Black pearl farm manager, Anders Hennie, says some fishermen are not happy because fishing is banned in this area.
But the 18,000 oysters hanging on the underwater lines actually contribute to the ecosystem of the marine park.
The Black Lip Oyster is known for its black pearls - as its name suggests - however, sometimes this isn't always the case says Hennie.
It is not quite right to say black pearl because the Black Lip Oyster can produce a range of colours, from white to pink, to grey to black. It sorts of depend on probably mostly the nutrition level in the water, temperature, things like that and certainly not always black, most of them is grey,.
Farming oysters is a relatively long process and need a lot of care. Diver Patrick Payet has just come back from checking the submarine farm.
He explains how oysters grow on so-called collectors lines before being put into panels on lines in the ocean.
These attract small babies, they attach on and then we keep them 18 months and then we take it out, we put on a special line at least for two years. After two years we start to implant them, says Payet.
When oysters are mature, after a total of 3.5 years, these are collected for the implantation of a nucleus on which the oyster will put layers of nacre to protect itself from the foreign object, resulting in producing a pearl.
Hennie explains the process: We put a shell in this particular instrument here, you open it, you peg it so you have a small opening and you take a sort of dentist like instrument and make a small incision into the gonad, which is also the sexual organ of the oyster.
The nucleus are from a fresh water mussel from Mississippi, USA, producing those exclusively for the pearl farming business.
These are organic, to reduce rejection by the mollusc, and are also coated with a disinfectant to reduce infections, hence the yellow colour.
Infections are responsible for the uneven shape of pearls, preventing the production of a perfectly round pearl - the ultimate and most valuable shape of a pearl.
In the best scenario, this is how the pearl is formed.
The mantle will produce a peal sack around the nucleus and this will then form the pearl.
This is the case for 75-80 percent of the molluscs.
The oysters are kept in individual bags called catch bags to observe whether the implant worked after two to four weeks.
If it is outside the oyster, it is a reject and then it will be discarded or used for something else. On average, last implantation we had about 23 percent either reject or vomit as we call it or dead, says Hennie.
Of this output of pearls, only one to five percent will be perfectly round shaped, hence the high value.
But the success rate is quite high compared to the traditional way of collecting wild oysters in hope to find pearls.
In nature, you wouldn't expect to find a really good pearl in probably one in 5,000 or in 10,000 even oysters, hence the very high value of pearls in the old days, pre-cultivation, he says.
Pearl shapes vary greatly: near round, semi-round, circle, baroque, drop, oval and button shaped.

Scuba diving in Samal island and exploring Siargao island Philippines
Me and my boyfriend Dennis went to Davao Philippines all the way from Norway for holiday vacation. We decided to take scuba diving course which was supposedly 4 days course but we were able to finish the course in 3 days. Davao is approximately 1h trip to Samal island by car, well depending on where you are in davao. If you are staying near downtown area then the travel time is much lesser. And weather you take taxi, jeepney or rent a car, it wouldn't cost you much since philippines is a budget country. Like everything is cheap that you can do whatever you want. The course itself cost Php 13000/ person. We took the course with Carabao Diving Shop after searching online and asking some friends in davao city.
This video was taken by the end of the course. Took a couple of dives and the last dive was down to a specific depth to pass the course.
And yes! we had lectures and then written exam. We passed the exam and got our international diving license. Yes its international license, thats correct!
After the diving course, we went off road trip to siargao island for 5days, which was not enough at all. I am truly out of words to describe how incredible our experience in siargao and how beautiful the island is.
MhaExplorer: First Scuba Diving Experience I DIVE, I CARE.
Philippines alone has a lot of diving spots and here in Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte. Near Davao City has perfect diving spot named CORAL GARDEN in Talicud Island, Samal. Where you can interact with the schools of fish, corals and many more species under the sea.
This wonderful activity help us to realized that we really need to protect our mother nature especially our oceans.
So watch and join me as we discover the beauty under the sea. And to care our treasures.

Pearl of the Persian Gulf by Irandokht Sarrafi
Regarding the present book Irandokht says: After my first children's storybook was published, I planned to publish my other storybooks in turn. But I started hearing heart-wrenching stories from around the world about young women who had escaped from Iran. I received this news on the radio, on TV, in printed press, and from friends and family who returned from visits to Tehran. Each night I would go to bed with a heavy heart and on one of those nights the Pearl of the Persian Gulf was born and Sara, the main character, became the embodiment of all those heroic young women who ran away in pursuit of freedom.

Brela, Croatia The pictures by Armand Rroshi Photography
Brela, a town next to the sea is a municipality with 1770 inhabitants. Brela has become one of the most exclusive and most wanted tourist destinations in Dalmatia during the last few decades of the 20th century thanks to the attractive natural environment, clean pebble and sand beaches, romantically arranged along a side where a promenade swerves between pine trees and modernly comfortable hotels, guest houses, apartments, boarding houses, catering and other modern tourist facilities.
High over Brela is the rural village Kričak with a wide offer of homemade specialties. The clean and clear sea and the care of the environment are best confirmed by numerous tourist awards. The Punta Rata beach has been carrying the Blue Flag for already 8 years.
The Blue Flag is the greatest international acknowledgment for a clean sea and environment. Lifting the Blue Flag on the Planet Earth on June 5 is a festive occasion. St. Stjepan is the day the Brela celebrates the day of the municipality.
Brela, CroatiaA long time ago, the inhabitants of Brela established their existence by raising grapevines and the renowned Maraska cherry on the steep terrace-like land.
With the development of tourism, the interest for agriculture decreased and in 1935 a society was established for making Brela more beautiful. But the thousand year old agriculture was preserved in numerous gardens and property on which the present inhabitants of Brela raise basically olives, grapevines, oranges and lemons.
Beach in BrelaThere is a construction preserved from the time of the Illyrians over the village of Škrabići along with several piles of ceramic, old pottery, excerpts of tombstones and money from the Roman era in Soline.
The small church which was dedicated to the Lady of Karmela was built in 1730. On the Biokovo mountain over Brela is the Hercegova fortress.
