Pearse Lyons Distillery - Worshipping at Dublin's Whiskey Altar
The floozy in the jacuzzi, the tart with the cart, the hags with the bags….Dubliners are fond of adding a nickname to the monuments that pop around their city.
Fitting then that the arrival of a new distillery with an unusual roof would earn itself a moniker of its own. In this episode we’re going back to the golden triangle of whiskey making in Ireland's capital city - to talk about the Liberties Lantern, the affectionate name given to the new Pearse Lyons Distillery.

His favorite whiskey? It would have to be Redbreast 12. His favorite whiskey memory? His 18 year old self ordering and tasting a measure of Midleton Very Rare in 1997 that he had saved up for.

Pearse Lyons Distillery
Pearse Lyons Distillery at St. James is a new chapter for The Liberties, Dublin. Family history, a personal passion for brewing and distilling, and an entrepreneurial spirit has inspired the restoration of St. James’ Church. Recently awarded Best Dublin visitor experience award in their category in the Irish Tourism Awards.
A boutique distillery located in the former St James' church and graveyard, the area known as the Golden Triangle of brewers and distillers back in the 1800's is making an amazing revival. Well worth a visit for both history and whiskey.

Remembering Dr. Lyons
Dr. Pearse Lyons, Alltech's president and founder
Dr. Pearse Lyons, the Irish entrepreneur whose vision for improving global agriculture built a multibillion-dollar international business, died March 8. He was 73.
In the late 1970s, Lyons immigrated to the United States with his young family — Deirdre, Aoife and Mark — and a dream. His vision — to sustain the planet and all things living in it by applying his yeast fermentation expertise to agricultural challenges — came to life in his home garage with $10,000.
Today, that vision is put to work by Alltech’s global team of more than 5,000 people around the world. Alltech focuses on improving animal, crop and human health and performance through its innovative use of yeast fermentation, enzyme technology, algae and nutrigenomics. Its mission has always been guided by Dr. Lyons’ early commitment to the “ACE principle” – a promise that the company’s work must have a positive impact on the Animal, the Consumer and the Environment.
A Purpose and a Passion - Dr. Pearse Lyons

Topglass- Be INSPIRED -The Pearse Lyons Whiskey Distillery
Probably one of the most challenging yet rewarding projects in our 25 years of business, Topglass are proud to have completed a very large and specialist glazing contract on one of Dublin’s latest and very unique tourist attractions.
Pearse Lyons Distillery is truly history in the remaking. St James’ Church dates back to the 12th century. In 1948, the top 30 feet of the church spire was removed due to structural problems. Purchased by the Lyons family in December 2013 a huge amount of time, energy and passion have been dedicated to renovating and rebuilding St James’ Church. Located in the heart of Liberties, The Pearse Lyons Distillery will provide a fresh lease of life into what was once the heart of the Irish beverage industry.
Topglass were awarded two contracts on this project over two years totalling almost €1.2m. The first involved something that we believe had never been attempted before, and that was to replace the church spire, only this time as a frameless glass spire. At the height of 14m and set at a further 24m above the ground, the end solution was the result of innovative design and engineering, and includes many unique and complex manufacturing/assembly solutions. The total weight of the spire (glass and steel) is 9700kg or approximately 10 tonnes. The glass panels have been fixed to the stainless steel frame structure using state-of-the-art bonding technology. No bolts or mechanical fixings were used to attach the glass panels to the carrier frames.
Today the property can be identified from various points in the city by a unique, innovative spire that beautifully enhances the Dublin city skyline.
The second phase of the project involved the design, manufacturing and installation of the full glass façade to the new adjacent Visitors Centre. The 420m² of aluminium curtain walling involved the use of heavy toughened laminated double glazing complete with solar control glass and flush toggle units to the front façade was a specially produced piece of artwork. The client commissioned us to design a full colour semi translucent image that represented the process of whiskey distilling. The image was hand painted in house using acrylics on canvas and then the finished image was recreated using a specialist hand screen printing process with ceramic inks and baked into the glass. The final piece is an amazing 12m x 6m spread over 18 panels and is the centre piece to the building.
