Best Places to Visit in Falkland Islands
Best Places to Visit in Falkland Islands
Covering an area of around 7,500 square kilometers in the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean, the Falkland Islands - Islas Malvinas to the Argentinians - encompass some 778 islands. Despite the fact they're only 483 kilometers off the coast of Argentina and 12,000 kilometers from England, the islands are a British Overseas Territory. The two largest islands in the archipelago, West Falkland and East Falkland, are where you'll find the majority of this tiny country's 3,000 or so residents (most of them of British descent).
Despite its remote location - or perhaps because of it - these cold, hilly islands attract a surprising number of tourists. Served by direct flights from the UK and South America, as well as visited by many cruise ships, the Falklands are perfectly situated to tap into the growing demand for tourists visiting the Antarctic. The Falklands' main attraction is undoubtedly its wildlife; it boasts numerous species of birds and marine mammals, along with a number of great tour options that will get you up close to them. Other popular Falkland Island activities include fishing, trekking, hiking, climbing, kayaking, and mountain biking. Find the best places to visit with our list of the top-rated tourist attractions in the Falkland Islands.

The Raid on Pebble Island was a raid by British Special Forces on Pebble Island's airfield during the Falklands War, and took place on the night of 14–15 May 1982.Pebble Island is one of the smaller Falkland Islands, lying north of West Falkland. The site was being used as a forward operating base for T-34 Mentor and Pucara aircraft by the Argentine Air Force; British Special Air Service operatives were tasked with destroying the aircraft on the ground, in an operation that echoed back to some of the unit's first missions during the North African Campaign of World War II.

falklands pebble island 1 nov 2013 part 8 hd 720
The first of two videos shot on Pebble Island, in the Falkland Islands
Pebble Island
This video was filmed entirely on Pebble Island, Falkland Islands. It shows some of the incredible and abundant wildlife of Pebble Island in the Falkland Islands. Rockhopper, Gentoo, Macaroni, Magellanic colonies and the occasional visiting King Penguin. Ponds containing nesting waterfowl and vagrants. Southern Giant Petrel and other marine bird rookeries. Raptors such as Variable Hawks, Peregrine Falcons, Striated Caracaras and Southern Caracaras. Many various smaller birds. Dolphins and Sea Lions along with plenty more.
Pebble Island also has some exceptional rarities such as a ginger coloured Leucistic Rockhopper Penguin and a 'Super spotty' Rockhopper Penguin.
This video was entirely recorded and edited by amateur videographer Brad Moriarty using Canon SX50 HS and GoPro Hero2 cameras and Sony Vegas Pro software.
The producer of this video has no rights to the soundtrack, 'Endless Summer' by The Jezabels.
Greatest Raids, SAS The Falklands Campaign
Immediately after the Argentinians had seized the Falkland Islands they established a small airbase, Aeródromo Auxiliar Calderón, on Pebble Island (Argentine name: Isla Borbón) using the local airstrip on which were based Argentine Air Force's FMA IA 58 Pucará and some Argentine Naval Aviation's T-34 Mentor light ground attack aircraft. Reconnaissance by these aircraft could have compromised the Royal Navy's manoeuvres before its intended landing on East Falkland.
SAS elements then embarked on HMS Hermes, were tasked with eliminating the threat, with naval support from the Type 22 frigate HMS Broadsword as Hermes' defensive escort and the County class destroyer HMS Glamorgan to provide naval gunfire support with its Mark 6 4.5 inch guns. The Naval Gunfire Support Forward Observer (NGSFO) who was responsible for coordinating the naval gunfire support was Captain Chris Brown RA of 148 Battery 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery.
Westpoint, Falkland Islands
February 2004, In the Field (i.e. anywhere but Stanley) of the Falklands. 'Malvinas' my ass, Argentina should bugger off and stop being such a honey badger. If ANYbody has even the flimsiest historic claim to these islands other than Britain (which nobody does), it would be Spain . . . but they don't. As a U.S. citizen, I covet Vancouver Island . . . because it's nearby . . .come on boys, let that tail wag the dog and let's go TAKE it!
