Pechiparai Reservoir, Kanyakumari.......
(കടപ്പാട് : മനു മോഹൻ തിരുവനന്തപുരം )
Pechiparai Reservoir is a reservoir located 43 kilometres (27 mi) from the town of Nagercoil, near the village of Pechiparai in Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu, India.
The reservoir was formed by the construction of the Pechiparai Dam, which was built across the Kodayar River about 1 mi (1.6 km) below the confluence of the Kallar, Chittar and Kuttiyar tributaries. It was built during the period 1897 - 1906 by the European engineer, Mr. Minchin,(called as mookanthurai by the local people) during the reign of the Travancore Maharaja Moolam Thirunal.
The original cost of construction of the dam was Indian Rupees 216.1 Lakhs (in the late 19th century). The catchment area of the reservoir is 207.19 km2 (80.00 sq mi), and the depth is 14.63 m (48.0 ft). The dam is a straight gravity type masonry dam 425.5 m (1,396 ft) long and 120.7 m (396 ft) high above the deepest foundation. There is no inspection gallery. The water from the reservoir is used for both irrigation of crops and for drinking purposes, which has led to conflict between farmers who want to use all the water for their crops, and local authorities, who don't have another place to draw drinking water from, for supply to the urban areas. The dam is surrounded by hills of the Western Ghats.

The Pechiparai Dam built across the Kothayar river is one of the oldest dams in India. It was built during the reign of the Travancore Maharaja Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma (1857 - 1924). Alexander Minchin, a European Engineer was behind the designing and implementation of this masonry dam. The water from the reservoir is used for both irrigation of crops and for drinking purposes. The Pechiamman temple is situated right in front of the Pechiparai dam.
A few kilometres from Pechiparai are Chittar1 and 2 dams. The natural scenic beauty of these places are really amazing. It is no doubt, a photographers paradise. Some of the Malayalam films like 'Rithu' and 'Malootti' were filmed at this destination.
Thirparappu, famous for its waterfall is located on the banks of Kothayar river at a distance of 42 Km from Nagercoil and 55 Km from Trivandrum. The Thirparappu scheme was inaugurated by the last ruling Maharaja of the princely state of Travancore, Sree Chithra Thirunal Balarama Varma on the 11th of February, 1948. This scheme has been instrumental in the development of tourism at Thirparappu.
The Mathur aqueduct which is at a distance of 3 kilometres from Thiruvattar and about 60 kilometres from Kanyakumari and Trivandrum. It is one of the tallest and longest aqueducts in South Asia.

Chittar Dam Kanyakumari Tamil Nadu
Chittar Dam is a picturesque irrigation dam in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. Chittar dam is ~50 KM from Trivandrum city. Actually there are two dams, Chitar Dam 1 and Chittar Dam 2. Chittar Dam 2 is the largest and this video is about Chittar Dam 2. Chittar dams are built as part of Kodayar project which includes Kodayar, Pechipara, Perunchani dams as well. The beauty of Chittar Dam is formed by the hill ranges in the backdrop of the reservoir; Kalimala (kalimala temple is there) and Kurisumala (famous pilgrim center) are the major hills in the close vicinity. We can climb those hills from a place on the other side of mountains called Pathukani. Chittar Dam should be visited early morning, so that you can enjoy the amazing reflection formed by mountains in the water, or else you can visit afternoon. Its a long walk of ~1 KM to reach the other end of the dam, but this walk offers amazing views. There are several small basic restaurants which sells tasty fish fries of Dam fish, Hotel Muhammod Aarif at Sankarankadavu is one among them and we had tasty fish fry and tapioca from there. The reservoir view offered infront of this restaurant is one of the best.
