A Beautiful Pemayangtse Monastery in Pelling Sikkim.
The Pemayangtse Monastery is a Buddhist monastery in Pemayangtse, near Pelling in the northeastern Indian state of Sikkim, located 110 km west of Gangtok. Planned, designed and founded by Lama Lhatsun Chempo in 1705, it is one of the oldest and premier monasteries of Sikkim, also the most famous in west Sikkim.Originally built by Lhatsun Chenpo in the 17th century, as a small Lhakhang, it was subsequently enlarged during the reign of the third Chogyal Chakdor Namgyal who was considered as Lhatsun Chenpo's third reincarnate, Jigme Pawo. The monastery follows the Nyingma Order of Tibetan Buddhism and controls all other monasteries of that Order in Sikkim. The monks of this monastery are normally chosen from the Bhutias of Sikkim.
The monastery was built for pure monks (ta-tshang) meaning monks of pure Tibetan lineage, celibate and without any physical abnormality. This practice is still retained. Only the monks of Pemayangtse Monastery are entitled to the title ta-tshang. The head lama of this monastery had the unique privilege of anointing the Chogyals of the erstwhile monarchy of Sikkim with holy water. Pemayangtse means Perfect Sublime Lotus, and is said to represent one of the four plexus of the human body.
The Pemayangtse Monastery is part of Buddhist religious pilgrimage circuit starting with the first monastery at Yuksom known as the Dubdi Monastery, followed by Norbugang Chorten, Tashiding Monastery, the Rabdentse ruins, the Sanga Choeling Monastery, and the Khecheopalri Lake.
The history of the monastery is very closely linked to the reign of Chador Namgyal at Rabdentse. Chador, a very religious person, had taken several initiatives to the spread of Buddhist religion in Sikkim. He had decreed that the second of every three sons of Bhutia family shall be ordained a monk of the Pemayangtse Monastery. During his reign, the Guru Lhakhang Tashiding (1715) was built. He not only patronized Buddhist religious places but also introduced the religious dances (mystery plays) to highlight the martial and native traditions of Sikkim.

October 2009's deluged late end to the rainy reason brought a BIT TOO DREARY of a morning (unfortunately) to have witnessed Pelling's well reknowned sunrise and breathtaking views of Khangchendzonga while visiting either famous 17th century hilltop Sangchen Pemayangtse monastery or 2nd oldest thick forested ridgetop Sanghak Choeling Gompa. Instead we just admired both their religious idols and objects of worship, wall murals and famous prayer wheels and walked in the bleak, overcast, mystic aura of the morning amongst prayer flag lined stupa fields among drumbeats and crickets.

Explosion of colour and music at annual Buddhist festival
It's a tradition which has endured for centuries - symbolising the victory of good over evil.
Sikkim, which sits at the bottom of Mount Kanchenjunga, the world's third tallest mountain, is home to some two hundred Buddhist monasteries - also known as Gompas.
The people here consider Mount Kanchenjunga to be sacred and revere it as their protecting deity.
During the course of the year, there are many religious festivals celebrated at various monasteries in line with the Buddhist calendar.
This place of worship - named Pemayangste monastery - is located 140km (86 miles) from the state capital of Gangtok and every year hosts a masked festival at the end of February.
It's a visual spectacle, with monks - known as lamas - wearing elaborate costumes, chanting and dancing to the hypnotic rhythm of drums, trumpets and clashing cymbals.
The ceremony unfolds here in the monastery's court yard, where the Lamas carry ceremonial swords and wear brightly-painted masks while swirling to the beat with sychronised footwork.
Tourists from India and further abroad are here to see these dances - which are also known as Chaams.
German couple Peter and Renate Schiml can't get enough of this colourful event.
They've been attending the mask festival every two years since 2000 - making this their seventh trip to Sikkim in 14 years.
The main motivation is Buddhist philosophy, says Peter We like also the history, the culture of Sikkim. We know a lot of people here. We know some friends and so we are coming if it is possible to this Chaam festival here in Pemayangtse.
The mask festival has become a major attraction for foreign tourists visiting here.
This year, there are many first-time visitors from Mexico and the US.
They say they're fascinated by the colourful performances which blend the culture and religious faith of the region.
I thought about different things when I first came here because they were Buddhists, they were kind of calm, but now I see a lot of colour, dancing, lots of happiness, so it is kind of mind breaking for me, says Juan Carlos Costal, a tourist from Mexico.
The whole thing is to me really, really interesting, says Ana Lenz, another tourist from Mexico.
I think, it's a fascinating experience, especially cause I come from the other side of the world - I come from Mexico and this is really, really interesting.
It's beautiful, says Monica Briones, a tourist from the US.
It's very moving and it definitely shows not only the culture and how special it is, but their faith and their belief and it's moving, especially for someone who's never been a part of this ever.
According to Buddhist experts, Chaams are religious dance dramas which depict the ritual of evil being destroyed by good.
The performers invoke the protective deities which banish evil demons.
Masks are used to represent different emotions, ranging from monstrous dragons to animals such as deer, yaks, tigers and lions.
The costumes themselves are robes made from rich brocade and satin embroidered with symbols of Tibetan Buddhism.
As you can see from the various masks, there are wrathful masks and there are masks of compassion, says Buddhist lama, Ugyen Chopel.
It represents the many facets of human emotion and it is also believed that these are the different faces and different forms that one might encounter during life after death.
Here at the Pemayangste monastery - which belongs to the Nyingma order of Buddhism - they've been practicing ancient rituals for centuries.
The building itself is adorned with mural paintings of Buddhist legends and rare Thangkas - hand painted religious scrolls made from silk and brocade.
Lamas here are proud they've been able preserve this piece of Buddhist tradition for centuries.
