Pemberton Unearthed
Last year I got to make a historical documentary with another Communications student and two History students. We decided to explore one of our local parks, Pemberton Park, to see just what role it played in the greater history of Salisbury.
See you on the flipside!

The Low Hanging Fruit of Being a Bike Friendly Community with Salisbury Mayor Jake Day
The way the current mayor of Salisbury, Jake Day, tells it, the small city's move to qualify as a Bike Friendly community by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) was a total no-brainer.
While reviewing the city's master plan for transportation, Jake, and other Salisbury leaders realized that with only minor improvements to their streets and sidewalks, they could qualify under LAB guidelines at the bronze level by simply applying. They agreed to do that quickly, and last year, the city of Salisbury joined just handful of towns and cities in Maryland that are officially known for being bike friendly.
It is fair to ask, what, if anything, a town gains by seeking out this designation? And Mayor Day has some interesting and hopefully encouraging words for other communities looking at this kind of strategy. In his Spy interview, Jake outlines the history and benefits of being bike friendly for pennies on the dollar.

Archeological Team Digs up the Past and the Ground at Pemberton Historical Park
(WICOMICO COUNTY, M.d.) - An archeological team digs up the ground and the past at Pemberton Historical Park in Salisbury.
Pemberton was built in 1741 and continues to draw in crowds for the free history, hiking trails, and scenery.
It could soon house a 100 person amphitheatre.
“We’re here testing to be sure there are no significant archeological sites in the path of the development just to make sure it’s a good site for the theatre and that it’s not going to destroy any history, said the project's archeologist, Dr. Ed Otter.
Construction for the amphitheatre could start as early as Spring, 2017.
In order to find historical objects, a person must sift, fairly hard to see if historical artifacts show up in the soil at Pemberton Historical Park. By doing so, the team ensures the location is an appropriate site to build an amphitheatre.
The surveying process involves digging holes of various depths and sifting through the dug up soil - quite a bit of arm and leg work.
The archeological team says they could find pottery and other historical artifacts in the ground.
“Pemberton Hall was built in 1741, and there may have been people out here before. There were Indians out here before so we have potential to find anything from 20-thousand year old Indians to yesterday’s garbage, added Dr. Otter.
Project managers say it is prohibited to your own dig or to use a metal detector, but you can still come and enjoy what the park has to offer.
“It’s actually prohibited to use metal detectors or to dig out here in this park specifically because of the integrity of the park we’re trying to maintain, but we do encourage people to come out here and enjoy the park, and the trails. There’s a lot of rich history here, said Andy Kitzrow, the recreation superintendent.
