Protestant Cemetery in Penang
Protestant Cemetery is the oldest Christian cemetery in Penang. Not far from the Eastern & Oriental Hotel, it is also called Northam Road Cemetery and was set up in the 18th-century for British colonial administrators, traders and missionaries that arrived after Penang’s establishment in 1786.
The Protestant church’s earliest grave is that of Captain Francis Light (one of the fathers of British colonialism in Southeast Asia). Other graves include those of James Richardson Logan (editor of the Penang Gazette) and Reverend Hutchings (early leader of St. George’s Church and founder of the Penang Free School). Movie buffs will be interested to know that Thomas Leonowens is buried here: he was 31 years-old when he passed away in 1859, leaving his widow stranded in the East. He was the husband of Anna, the self-same Anna of The King & I or Anna & the King fame.
Mature frangipani trees sweeten the air for those who want to stroll along and check out the graves at the Protestant Cemetery (some with beautiful tombstones) of noteworthy figures from Penang's early years. Some of the simple, square-ish tombstones are in a state of disrepair (Captain Light's tomb is surprisingly simple), but there are plenty that are huge and ornate affairs.
You will notice that many of those buried here died young: this is because there was a severe malaria outbreak after the clearing of the forests.
The Protestant Cemetery was the most widely used graveyard until the Western Road Cemetery was created in the late 19th century: since then the Protestant cemetery stopped accepting new burials.
To get to the Protestant Cemetery you can take Rapid Penang’s free shuttle bus service to Lebuh Muntri Station: from there walk north along Penang Road until the junction of Northam Road. The burial grounds are located on the left-hand side of the road.

Old George Town cemetery hidden in plain sight
Located within the George Town World Heritage Site, the old Protestant Cemetery was created soon after the British East India Company (EIC) established a settlement in Penang in 1786 by Francis Light.
The earliest recorded burial is of H.D.D Cunningham in 1789 while one Cornelia Van Someran was the last to be buried in 1892.
Approximately 2,500 people are buried in the cemetery, including Light. Many of the early governors of Penang, many of whom succumbed to tropical diseases such as malaria are also buried at the cemetery.
Unfortunately, only 340 or so graves are still identifiable.
The cemetery is considered one of the best preserved examples of an 18th and 19th century Christian cemetery in Southeast Asia according to George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI), the body dedicated to protecting, promoting and preserving George Town as a sustainable city.
At the time the Protestant Cemetery was founded, it lay at the edge of town surrounded by vegetable plots and paddy fields. Over time, these farm lands gave way to villages houses in the early 19th century which in turn were replaced by brick houses during the turn of the century.
Today, it is right within George Town. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll through the cemetery which offers a glimpse into the tough life of Penang’s earliest residents – many who are buried there did not even live up to 40.

Malaya (Part 4) - Revisiting Places Seen On National Service During Malaya Campaign 1954-57
These 4 short videos are of my father retracing his footsteps through Malaya/Malaysia 50 years after he served there with the Royal Scots Fusiliers. During his travels he took photo`s of the graves of fallen comrades for families back home, tidied up graves and laid flowers on behalf of thier families, most of whom have never had the opportunity to visit their loved ones graves in person.
In this film you can see Kroh Camp, Kroh Post Office, The Road To Baling, Old Pass Road, Sungei Patani, Penang, Prai, The Padang, Western Road Christian Cemetery and Penang Hill Funicular. Also at the end of this film is a selection of photographs of their trip and of some old Malaya Veterans at their recent reunions.
