Exploring Penang (Georgetown): Things To Do in One Day
After our trip to Langkawi, we headed to Georgetown, in Penang, Malaysia. One day we walked around and did all these things in a single day. More coming on:
Penang, Malaysia is an island just off the coast of the West Coast of Malaysia. It’s one of the most famous areas of Malaysia, especially known for its rich and diverse culture and for its food - many people come to Penang just to eat - as did I. Ying and I arrived to Penang from Langkawi, and we stayed in Penang for about a week, doing some work, and eating out way through the city. One day though, we decided to put on our shoes and go to visit as many of the attractions in the center of the city as we could. So this travel videos is an overview of the top things to do in Georgetown, Penang, but also a travel guide as well. Hope you enjoy to!
To begin the day, I started off with a Penang tourist map and located all the places we wanted to go. Since we were staying close to the Georgetown World Heritage Inc., that’s where we first decided to stop. It’s more of an information center, so after just a few minutes we continued on our way to the Chew Jetty, one of the couple of Chinese docks where homes are built over the water. On the way though, we walked through Lebuh Armenian (one of the most famous streets in Penang), past George Town street art, and also briefly stopped at Cheah Kongsi. The Chew Jetty was a nice place to walk around for a few minutes, there wasn’t a lot to do there, but mostly some small souvenir shops and some nice places to take photos.
We continued walking and passed the Queen Victory Lighthouse and then we continued on to Fort Cornwallis, a British built fort, and the only fort in Malaysia - though as they said it wasn’t ever used for battle. I was a little disappointed visiting Fort Cornwallis in Penang because we paid a pretty big entrance fee, but there really wasn’t anything to see inside - I could have seen it all from the outside. Anyway, we continued on walking around Penang, and then circled back past a cathedral. By this time we were getting quite hungry, so we headed into Little India, and then continued to a famous restaurant called Kapitan for tandoori chicken. I didn’t know they were really famous for their rice biryani, but I got a couple pieces of tandoori chicken and naan, it they were both incredible.
In the afternoon, we first stopped at the Goddess of Mercy Temple in Penang, and walked around for a few minutes, and then continued on to Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, one of Penang’s main attractions and a place I was really looking forward to visiting. Mr. Cheong, an insanely wealthy Chinese business man built the Blue Mansion and it has now been restored and it’s actually open as a hotel, but they also give a couple of guided tours each day. The tour took 45 minutes, and it was beautiful to see. The only thing I wish is that we could have seen a little more of the Blue Mansion, because unfortunately we didn’t get to see much, but mostly listened to the history of the mansion - still it was worth seeing in Penang.
To finish of one day of things to do in Penang, Georgetown, we visited the Kapitan Keling Mosque, and then lastly we went to Khoo Kongsi. For dinner to end this day in Penang, we went to a restaurant to eat dim sum, and a few other Chinese dishes as well.
Thank you for watching this “things to do in Geogetown, Penang” travel video. Hope you enjoyed it, and hope it will give you some ideas for what to do when you visit. More Penang street food videos coming soon!

PENANG STREET FOOD TOUR MALAYSIA | Georgetown Travel Vlog 087, 2017
Malaysia is known for it's amazing food and Penang is possibly the heart of that! So we decided to do a Penang Street Food Tour and get some local hawker food in Georgetown with 'Food Tour Malaysia' ⬇ Click 'Show More' to expand ⬇
This day in Penang was all thanks to Food Tour Malaysia, check them out here if you'd like to do a similar tour - they were awesome:
Trying Malaysian food as been really interesting as we travel, taking the food tour was actually the coolest way we could have done it. We go to hawker markets and eat at street food stalls ourselves but you never really learn anything or understand the story behind it. Our tour guide, Kevin, was awesome and as we made our way around Penang we learnt a lot about Malaysian history unique to Georgetown - it was a cool way to travel.
Thanks for watching this vlog, if you do come to Malaysia be sure to reach out to these guys and look into a Penang street food tour.

The island of Penang is known for its rich history. Here, everything from the architecture to the food has been influenced by Malay, Indian, Chinese and European cultures. There is perhaps no better place to sample the delicious array of foods than in George Town, Penang’s capital city.
Here, if you want to eat well, you’ve got to hit the streets in search of local delicacies. Follow David to the best dishes to try in Penang!
First stop on this epic food journey is Kweng Kwee Street to try the famous Penang laksa and a couple of refreshing desserts – ice kacang (also known as “ABC” throughout Malaysia) and cendol. David takes us inside a local restaurant and shows us his laksa and dessert bowls that he’s about to try. Penang Laksa could quite possibly be the most famous dish in all of Malaysia. The basic ingredients of Penang Laksa are fish broth, fish balls, herbs, noodle, and chili pepper. Both desserts made by starting off with a mound of shaved ice. Ice kacang has red beans, jellies, and syrup (corn is optional). The basic ingredients of Cendol are coconut milk, jelly noodles, and green food coloring.
Local restaurants like these are common throughout Malaysia. They are normally cheaper than air-conditioned restaurants and serve freshly prepared noodle bowls and laksas. If you don’t want to wait for a table, or you’re just looking for a refreshing dessert to combat the heat and be on your way, order directly from the street vendors along the road. And be sure to have cash on hand.
Next up: David heads to Kimberly Street for dinner to try Char Koay Teow (fried prawn noodles). The secret to really good Char Koay Teow is the heat of the wok - the hotter the better. A plate of these tasty prawn noodles will run you about 8 Malaysian Ringgit, or about 2 U.S. Dollars. Pair it with a limau asam boi (refreshing lime and sour plum drink). David also takes the opportunity to try Koay Teow on Kimberly Street. This is another type of noodle bowl served with chicken and a rich, sweet duck sauce.
George Town is also known for its delicious Indian food, so David heads to Little India to Kapitan Restaurant to try delicious buttery cheese naan bread and chicken biryani (spiced chicken rice). The best part about the restaurant is that it’s open 24.7.
David then gets the opportunity to experience the Chinese influences in Malaysia by dining at a traditional Dim Sum restaurant, Tai Tong. Dim Sum are bite-size portions of ready-made food served in small steamed plates. What’s great about dim sum is you can sample a variety of dumplings, buns, and small plates
The next place on the itinerary is the Red Garden Hawker Center, which has a different vibe than the other places you just saw. Definitely more touristy, but a great variety of dishes to try. The atmosphere on a Friday night is definitely lively and family-friendly. David first eats Hokkien Mee, a Malaysian dish of fried egg noodles with prawns (can also come with other types of meat). Afterwards, he tries a mutton biryani, an Indian dish of spiced rice and sheep meet served in a clay pot.
The last place to eat featured on David’s where to eat in George Town, Penang is the New Lane Hawker Center, which is more of a row of food stalls and an area of plastic patio furniture for sitting down. David tries an oyster omelette, beef satay (grilled skewered beef strips) and ends it all with an ice-cold cendol for dessert. New Lane Hawker Center is open from 6 to 11 pm. It’s popular with the locals and is a 25-minute walk from the center of George Town.
David hopes that your travels to Asia one day bring you to bustling Georgetown. In addition to all its historical sights and famous street art, the food choices here are unrivaled!

BEST Food in Malaysia - ULTIMATE STREET FOOD TOUR in Penang | George Town
Asam Laksa, Char Koay Teow, Cendol, Ais Tingkap, Pasembur, Wantan Mee and more... I try it all!!! If you don't try street food while visiting George Town (Penang Island, Malaysia), then you haven't been there; it's a must! The Penang cuisine is ranked as one of the best in Asia. Furthermore, Penang, with George Town being the absolute epicentre, has also been voted as the number one culinary destination in 2014 (by Lonely Planet).
Penang food is influenced by several Asian countries, mainly India and China, and therefore, is a mix of traditional Malay, Indian and Chinese dishes with Char Koay Teow and Asam Laksa being the most famous dishes. Asam Laksa has even made it to the World's 50 best foods compiled by CNN travel.
There's more to Penang food than just the eating; the atmosphere contributes to the amazing experience. Watching the food being prepared and cooked amid the bustling streets of the beautiful historical core of George Town (UNESCO World Heritage Site), not to mention the sounds and smells, plays an important role in the experience.
That being said, in this episode, you will be joining me for a full day of eating incredible street food in the food capital of Malaysia. I've also included the cost of each dish/meal to provide you with a somewhat relevant answer to the question: how expensive is Malaysia?ENJOY!
Lastly, George Town is a beautiful city with wonderful people. George Town exceeded my expectations and, as of today, I hold it as one of my all-time favourite destinations for sure.
FYI: this is the fourth episode in English. My English speaking skills are far from flawless so bear with me :) My channel name, Matvraket, is Swedish for the glutton.

Penang | Malaysia Food Tour Series [Ep 1]
Penang is the home to wonderful history, friendly locals and delicious meals. A definite attraction in northern Malaysia, Penang is represents a mixture of traditional and modern culture. What is really synonym with Penang is the food! Ask Malaysians and many would have traveled to Penang just to savour the delicious meals.
It was a pity that I only managed to feature a few places and I bet others will tell that one stall is better than the other. But you see, that IS Penang. Too much good food! We just cannot name the best. I personally had a great time eating Nasi Kandar, Roti Canai, Cendol, Curry Mee, Fried Oyster with Eggs and the famous Asam Laksa. Come join me in my next food tour by SUBSCRIBING!

George Town, Penang - STREET FOOD and tour!
Ornate Buddhist temples, steamy jungles, and the unique fusion of Indian, Chinese and Malaysian cuisines? It must be George Town, the colourful, multicultural island capital of Malaysia's Penang province.
Anthony Bourdain visited here and was blown away by what he experienced. Watching him eat here was the inspiration for our whole trip.
George Town is considered by many to be the greatest city for street food in the whole of Asia (and hence the world, in my opinion).
From creamy Asam Laksa to spicy Char Kway Teow, we ate our way across the city, but also took time to explore the various sights that make this such an amazing destination.
The BEST Daytime NASI KANDAR in PENANG + Cheap Market Foods | Malaysia
The last day in Penang!
Decided to get back to my roots as I ventured through a morning market to find some yummy treats!
After the market, I had to go snack on some of these curry puffs. I had heard they were stuffing them to the max and were some of the best in the city! Let’s just say, they did not disappoint!
Finally, for my favorite meal in Penang. Nasi Kandar, Deen Maju really won a special place in my heart. Doing what truly taste like Nasi Kandar heaven.
A little special surprise as I ran into some bros who follow the channel. One of the coolest experiences in my life and I cannot wait to run into other in the future!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just a guy from Arkansas chasing his dreams of traveling the world, meeting amazing people, and trying all the delicious food I can find!
Recently finished working in Hong Kong. I am from a small farm in the states, I am now taking advantage and the opportunities I have to travel the world in search of some of the most delicious foods, unique places, and friendliest people.
A lover of street food, good laughs, and learning about other cultures. I hope to indulge in all these things and more as I bring you along with me on my epic journeys.

PENANG Food & Street Art | What to Eat In Georgetown Penang
Penang Food Malaysia. Street Art Penang. Georgetown. Malaysia
A typhoon hit Penang at the time of editing this video. I wish the people of Penang blessings and healing. - John
My first time in Georgetown, Penang and I was excited to try the street food here. Penang isn’t in my radar only until a Malaysian friend told me about it. So I booked a flight and there I was. I loved the Cendol it’s just beyond words it’s so good it’s worth to fly back for it. Georgetown is an old area but full of charm, I hope they keep it that way. There’s something so special about it the architecture.
I hope you guys like this video as much as I did.
