Ferry Boat to Penang Island from Butterworth Station (Malaysia)
We follow the crossing by ferry Boat to Penang Island from Butterworth Station in Malaysia having originally arrived by train from Bangkok Thailand as here: From Butterworth Station is is an easy 5 minute walk to find the pier for Georgetown (Penang). Note, ATMs are not easy to find on arrival so you may want to exchange money on the train between Hat Yai and Padang Besar, where hawkers offer decent exchange rates. The boat to Penang costs only 1.2 RM and the journey takes roughly 20mins. On arrival I suggest just crossing the road and following Chulia Street to the main tourist stretch of Georgetown. There are taxis but don’t expect them to use meters and opt to pay a fixed price of no more than 15RM throughout the nearby Georgetown area.

Penang Ferry Service
Penang Ferry Service from Mainland Penang to Georgetown in Penang Island in Malaysia
Penang Ferry | Butterworth to Penang Island | Rapid Ferry | Malaysia Tourism
The Butterworth to Penang Ferry is the traditional way to travel to Penang Island from the mainland. The ferry opened back in 1894 and was then the only way for railway passengers from Singapore or Kuala Lumpur to reach George Town. It is still the most convenient way for rail travellers to reach Penang Island.
Most vehicle traffic these days uses the two road bridges to Penang but the ferry, which carries cars and motorbikes, is a pleasant alternative for those not in a hurry. I took my car on the ferry in December 2018 (both ways) and found it a relaxing way to travel and very convenient for my hotel which was located just metres away from the ferry terminal at Weld Quay.

Penang Port, Rapid Ferry -Turnaround George Town-Butterworth - Travel to Malaysia
The Port of Penang, the main harbour in northern Malaysia, is operated by the Penang Port Commission. The Port consists of seven facilities, with six of them in Butterworth and Perai on the mainland, including the North Butterworth Container Terminal, Butterworth Deep Water Wharves and the Prai Bulk Cargo Terminal. The Port of Penang, the third busiest seaport in Malaysia, handled more than 1.52 million TEUs of cargo in 2017.
Meanwhile, Swettenham Pier, situated in the heart of George Town, is the sole Port facility on Penang Island. The pier now accommodates cruise ships, making it one of the major entry points into Penang. As of 2017, Swettenham Pier recorded 1.35 million tourist arrivals, thereby surpassing Port Klang as the busiest cruise shipping terminal in Malaysia; the pier has also attracted some of the world's largest cruise liners, such as the RMS Queen Mary 2. The pier also serves as a homeport for regional-based cruise ships.
Occasionally, the Port of Penang hosts warships as well, including those from Singapore, the United States and most recently, China.
The cross-strait Rapid Ferry service connects George Town and Butterworth, and was formerly the only transportation link between Penang Island and the mainland until the completion of the Penang Bridge in 1985. At the time of writing, six ferries ply the Penang Strait between George Town and Butterworth daily.

Ferry Crossing from Butterworth to Penang, Malaysia - Tourist Attraction
Ferry Crossing from Butterworth to Penang, Malaysia - Tourist Attraction. There are two bridges now, however, this antique ferry service is an experience of its kind. Cars are driven onto both the upper and lower decks, and passengers have seats on the upper deck. Ferries have very unique designs. Recommended for an experience - we tried out the ferry and enjoyed it.
Penang 2017 Ep4: Penang Ferry (Turnaround Georgetown-Butterworth!)
Day 2 in Penang! Yahoooo! Thanks for following our Penang trip so far. So, Episode 4 brought us to the ferry terminal at Georgetown. We took a return-trip from Georgetown to Butterworth. I didn’t really time our ride on the ferry, but I would say one-way range between 20-30mins.
It was my first time on this ferry. I know, it has been there for ages, but like, there didn’t seem to be a need to ride on this ferry whenever I go to Penang. But this time, we purposely did this as our “tourist” sight and sound and it was worth it!
I totally enjoyed the sea breeze and the ease of this mode of transportation. No fuss. Not lost. No cows. Lol. You will understand the cow joke if you watched at least 30secs of my vlog.
When we got to Butterworth, our initial idea was to grab an Uber car or a taxi and head to the town for lunch. But we kinda skipped that idea because it was SO FREAKING HOT in Butterworth. I know, it doesn’t make sense that the mainland is hotter than the island, when they are just like few kilometres away. But yeah, changed to Plan B, we boarded the ferry again and headed back to the island to eat food cooked by the island people. And to a cooler island. Well, actually, the humidity was the same.
So yeah, thanks for watching this episode. Till the next one!

Penang Ferry
The ferry service began operation in 1920, under the management of a Chinese-owned company. However, today, it is operated by Penang Port Sdn Bhd.
Penang Ferry Service is the oldest ferry service in Malaysia. Located in the state of Penang, this famous ferry service connects Sultan Abdul Halim ferry terminal in Butterworth to Raja Tun Uda ferry terminal at Weld Quay in George Town in Penang Island. The ferries are designed for vehicles to roll-on/roll-off. Some board pedestrian passengers on the upper deck and small vehicles (cars) on the lower deck, whereas some board vehicles on both decks.
