Ferry Boat to Penang Island from Butterworth Station (Malaysia)
We follow the crossing by ferry Boat to Penang Island from Butterworth Station in Malaysia having originally arrived by train from Bangkok Thailand as here: From Butterworth Station is is an easy 5 minute walk to find the pier for Georgetown (Penang). Note, ATMs are not easy to find on arrival so you may want to exchange money on the train between Hat Yai and Padang Besar, where hawkers offer decent exchange rates. The boat to Penang costs only 1.2 RM and the journey takes roughly 20mins. On arrival I suggest just crossing the road and following Chulia Street to the main tourist stretch of Georgetown. There are taxis but don’t expect them to use meters and opt to pay a fixed price of no more than 15RM throughout the nearby Georgetown area.

Penang Port, Rapid Ferry -Turnaround George Town-Butterworth - Travel to Malaysia
The Port of Penang, the main harbour in northern Malaysia, is operated by the Penang Port Commission. The Port consists of seven facilities, with six of them in Butterworth and Perai on the mainland, including the North Butterworth Container Terminal, Butterworth Deep Water Wharves and the Prai Bulk Cargo Terminal. The Port of Penang, the third busiest seaport in Malaysia, handled more than 1.52 million TEUs of cargo in 2017.
Meanwhile, Swettenham Pier, situated in the heart of George Town, is the sole Port facility on Penang Island. The pier now accommodates cruise ships, making it one of the major entry points into Penang. As of 2017, Swettenham Pier recorded 1.35 million tourist arrivals, thereby surpassing Port Klang as the busiest cruise shipping terminal in Malaysia; the pier has also attracted some of the world's largest cruise liners, such as the RMS Queen Mary 2. The pier also serves as a homeport for regional-based cruise ships.
Occasionally, the Port of Penang hosts warships as well, including those from Singapore, the United States and most recently, China.
The cross-strait Rapid Ferry service connects George Town and Butterworth, and was formerly the only transportation link between Penang Island and the mainland until the completion of the Penang Bridge in 1985. At the time of writing, six ferries ply the Penang Strait between George Town and Butterworth daily.

A Ferry Ride from Butterworth to Penang-Malaysia (September 2017)
A ferry ride from Butterworth to Penang is a must for all travellers coming from the mainland of Peninsula Malaysia. It is the most iconic and nostalgic ride to travel the old fashioned way. I paid RM1.20 and the journey takes roughly 15 minutes.
This ferry services is the oldest in Malaysia that started operations in 1920 that ply between Seberang Perai ferrying both passengers and vehicles to and from the island. I really enjoyed the slow ride as it offers me a panoramic and spectacular view of Penang.
Originally painted in a ubiquitous betel nut orange colour, now the ferries are brightly painted.

Penang 2017 Ep4: Penang Ferry (Turnaround Georgetown-Butterworth!)
Day 2 in Penang! Yahoooo! Thanks for following our Penang trip so far. So, Episode 4 brought us to the ferry terminal at Georgetown. We took a return-trip from Georgetown to Butterworth. I didn’t really time our ride on the ferry, but I would say one-way range between 20-30mins.
It was my first time on this ferry. I know, it has been there for ages, but like, there didn’t seem to be a need to ride on this ferry whenever I go to Penang. But this time, we purposely did this as our “tourist” sight and sound and it was worth it!
I totally enjoyed the sea breeze and the ease of this mode of transportation. No fuss. Not lost. No cows. Lol. You will understand the cow joke if you watched at least 30secs of my vlog.
When we got to Butterworth, our initial idea was to grab an Uber car or a taxi and head to the town for lunch. But we kinda skipped that idea because it was SO FREAKING HOT in Butterworth. I know, it doesn’t make sense that the mainland is hotter than the island, when they are just like few kilometres away. But yeah, changed to Plan B, we boarded the ferry again and headed back to the island to eat food cooked by the island people. And to a cooler island. Well, actually, the humidity was the same.
So yeah, thanks for watching this episode. Till the next one!

Train Ride in Malaysia from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth along with a ferry to Penang
In this travel video we take a train ride from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth and then a commuter ferry from Butterworth to Penang (George Town), Malaysia on a long full-day journey. Given that it was our first train trip in Malaysia we were ecstatic to have a 7 hour journey. Boarding from KL Sentral we headed up north passing several cities, countryside areas, jungle and mountainous regions. Overall, the scenery was stunning and we nearly had the train to ourselves sharing a cabin with only a few families and some curious cute children who came over to play with us. Along the way we snacked on some food and ended up purchasing a box of mixed rice that we shared together. Our train was delayed by nearly one hour meaning it came closer to eight hours than the scheduled seven. Upon arriving in Butterworth we walked a short distance and then boarded a passenger ferry to Penang (George Town). Overall, we had a great trip but we certainly were tired and in need of food upon arrival.

We are at KL Sentral and it is really early in the morning and today we are boarding a train that is going to take us all the way up to Butterworth and from there we are taking a ferry over to Penang.
I am super excited today because this my first time taking the trains in Malaysia. Train transportation is by far my favorite way of getting around in any country. It appears our journey today is going to be about seven hours, so we've got a nice long train trip ahead of us.
We're on the train now and as you can see we've almost got the whole place to ourselves.
We've been on the train for an hour and a half now and we've already devoured all of the snacks we brought along except for the peanuts, so we've decided to purchase a little rice-y goodness over here.
Hungry boy, what are we having? Well, we have fried rice. Your favorite.
We are on a very exciting train journey. We have been traveling for a few hours now and we are just crossing through the jungle. I want to live in a jungle. You seem like a jungle kind of girl. Yes, in a shack in the jungle. With me? Maybe? Whatever.
We're finally getting close to Butterworth here. We've been on a journey that has actually been over seven hours. The train is slightly delayed and it looks like we're about 20 kilometers outside of Butterworth. From there we are going to grab a quick bite to eat and then we're off on a twenty minute ferry to get to Penang our final destination.
It has been a very long journey and how am I going to reward myself by eating Indian food. Oh yeah. The first thing we're doing in Butterworth according to you. We are. I want Indian food.
Butter me up here in Butterworth. Right over here is the Eastern Oriental Express train - one of the luxury trains that goes all of the way from Singapore to Bangkok. It is a train we both really want to take someday.
We are almost at our destination. We are taking the ferry from Butterworth to Penang.
We're pulling in to the port now and this is the end of journey. It has been a full day event. We woke up at four AM this morning to work on blogging projects. We left the guesthouse by seven. We hopped on the train by eight forty and it is now almost five thirty. We are completely knackered. We are starving. We are going to get a big plate of food. I don't care what it is. Indian food! Whatever? I don't care. We're going to eat. We're going to feast and we're going to drop off our bags wherever we're staying and we're going to chillax the rest of the day.
