Penang Hill Railway, Penang Island, Malaysia |
Penang Hill is a hill resort comprising a group of peaks on Penang Island, Malaysia. It is located within the Air Itam suburb, 6 km (3.7 mi) west of the centre of George Town.
Penang Hill is also known by the Malay name Bukit Bendera, which actually refers to Flagstaff Hill, the most developed peak.
Penang Hill covers a number of hills, with the highest point at Western Hill which is 833 m (2,733 ft) above sea level.
The hill stands out prominently from the lowlands as a hilly and forested area. It was used as a retreat during the British colonial period, and is now a popular tourist destination in Penang.
The top of the hill is accessible via the Penang Hill Railway from its base station at Hill Railway Station Road.
To date, this funicular railway system is the only one of its kind in Malaysia, transporting over a million visitors to the peak of Penang Hill as of 2014.

Penang & Georgetown Malaysia Travel Guide, Little India, Penang Hill, Street Art, Clan Jetties
All we ever hear about Penang was EATING! Much to our surprise there was a lot more to do in Penang than just eat until you pop. Walking through the quaint streets of Georgetown was an adventure in itself. Penang is definitely a way different vibe compared to Kuala Lumpur. I got way more of a typical South East Asian city vibe out of Penang, and by that I mean, the smells, dirty streets, critters etc.. However, this didn't detract from an excellent experience of the city.
The first thing we did was rent a motorbike and get a lay of the land. Aside from the beaches (which were nowhere near as nice as Langkawi: watch our video here: most action in Penang takes place in and around Georgetown.
Georgetown has famous street art scattered through the city and we spent an entire day on a scavenger hunt to find all these different murals and sculptures. They were really worth spending a day hunting down.
Penang Hill was a great view of the city, but as you can see in the video the tram ride to the top is less than stellar. You are crammed in like sardines and once you get to the top there isn't much going on other than to get an excellent view and pictures of the city of Penang.
Eating.... of course, this is what everyone will tell you to do in Penang and there was no shortage of awesome Indian Food. We ate the same Indian food 5 meals in a row I think. Aside from Indian there are several excellent Dim Sum places to check out. This was one of our first times eating Dim Sum and it was an experience to say the least. Luckily we had a friendly staff member explain how this works. If you don't know, it goes something kind of like this: Sit down at a table in a jam packed open air restaurant and several carts will be wheeled around continuously. As a cart approaches pick your Dim Sum. I lost count of how many different options there were, but our favorites were definitely the shrimp dim sum and the BBQ bun.
Check out our video of Kuala Lumpur to see the drastic difference between Penang and KL:

Penang Hill (George Town, Malaysia)
On Penang Hill you can escape the heat of tropical Georgetown. The hill, also known as Bukit Bendera, is 830 meter high (2,750 foot) and it's much cooler than in the city below. It's about 3 degrees cooler than the places near the coast. It is a popular by the locals as well as tourists.
The station to get to the top is located in Air Itam. From Georgetown, take a Transit Link bus No 1, or No 101, or Lim Seng bus No 91, or minibus No 21 from Lebuh Chulia to the Air Itam Terminal. Penang Hill has a population of about 1000 locals.
The funicular at the railway station takes you to the top and it will cost you RM4.50 for one way. The train leaves the station at Air Itam at 6.30am and at half hourly intervals.
The funicular railway will not take you straight to the top, you have to change trains halfway. in the meantime you'll pass several small station, where the local people get off. There are are also some small hotels and guesthouses on this stretch.
The railway was built in 1923. Any Home Advisor Reviews builder today would be impressed with the outcome of the seventeen year-long railway construction project. Recent reviews of the railway system resulted in a complete overhaul of the system in 2010.
With its misty morning trails, vegetable and flower farms and charming colonial bungalows, Penang Hill (or Bukit Bendera) has been a popular hill resort since the 18th century when visitors were taken up on horseback or special sedan chairs. Now, getting to the top is easy-peasy thanks to the upgraded funicular which whisks visitors from the station at the foot of the hill to the summit in only a matter of minutes.
Penang Hill was the first colonial hill station developed in Peninsular Malaysia. Comprising Western Hill, Bukit Laksamana, Tiger Hill, Flagstaff Hill and Government Hill, it is located six km away from Georgetown. The hilly and forested area is the state's primary hill resort.
Set 821m above Penang’s capital, islanders call it Bukit Bendera and it is generally about five degrees cooler than Georgetown. It is the last patch of tropical rainforest in Penang so the flora and fauna here have been protected since 1960. It does not have the same prominence as Genting Highlands, Fraser’s Hill or Cameron Highlands but it is one of Penang’s best-known tourist attractions due to its fresher climate.
