Visiting Penguin Island

Located in the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park south of Perth, Penguin Island is a popular nature-based tourism destination. This video includes highlights for visitors as well as how to stay safe and avoid the dangers of crossing the sandbar.

Penguin Island - Perth, Western Australia - Explore Tours Perth

Penguin Island sits around 45 minutes south of Perth just outside a town called Rockingham, Western Australia.

You can get down to Penguin Island by driving or taking a train and then a bus to Shoalwater where you catch a ferry over to the Island.

If you don't have a car and don't want to get the train you can join Explore Tours Perth on one of their amazing Day Tours to Penguin Island.

Penguin Island - Western Australia

This is one of the many small islands located just off the coast near Rockingham. It is a popular day trip with ferries running on the hour from 9am to 3pm.

The island is 12.5 ha in area and is just 600 metres off the mainland coast. There are reports that fig trees were planted on the island as early as 1901 but the first recorded resident was a Canadian named Seaforth McKenzie. He camped on Penguin and Garden Island from 1914 and settled permanently on Penguin Island in 1917.

Penguin Island, Rockingham

Rockingham Wild Encounters operate an hourly ferry service to beautiful Penguin Island from September to May, each day. This unspoilt nature reserve is just a five minute boat ride away and boasts white sandy beaches, secluded bays and crystal clear waters perfect for swimming or snorkelling.

Penguin Island is home to Western Australia's largest colony of little penguins (the smallest species in the world). Visitors can get up close and learn all about the penguins at the Discovery Centre - the three penguin feeding session daily at 10:30am, 12:30pm and 2:30pm.

Visitors can also combine their visit with a dolphin watching eco-adventure or a glass bottom boat cruise that visits a colony of Australian Sea Lions.

You can even go swimming with the wild dolphins or on a seal kayak tour between September and May!

Hi there everyone! Yesterday we went to PENGUIN ISLAND. Whaaaaat. Yes, it is actually an island that is home to over 1000 little penguins and birds. It also had tremendous views, honestly the best we've ever found in Australia!
