Yellow-Eyed Penguins at Penguin Place Dunedin New Zealand
About a half hour drive from Dunedin is New Zealands Yellow-eyed Penguin Conservation Reserve. Mr Howard McGrouther established the reserve in 1985. He now provides guided tours through a series of covered trenches and observation huts where the penguins can be observed emerging from the sea and resting in their native habitat. This conservation project is a multi-Award Winner and is entirely financed through these guided tours.

Penguin Place on Otago Peninsula near Dunedin - 11th November 2014
The day before this we stayed in the cold for an hour at Bushy Beach, Oamaru waiting to watch a couple of yellow-eyed penguin dots wander up the beach in near darkness. That was awesome.
This was incredible. Penguin Place is a private reserve for the penguins, and their bunkers allow you to watch them right up close in their nesting boxes and as they walk around.
We were very lucky to see a yellow-eyed mother feeding her chicks, before it started to hail. But the hail had the seals escaping to the ocean and playing in the waves, and it encouraged most of the yellow-eyes out of their nesting boxes.
Fantastic hour or so. Highly recommended.

-- About this video --
This late afternoon, we are making our way to Dunedin’s wildlife hot spot, the Otago Peninsula. This time, we’re checking out the Royal Albatross Centre for a New Zealand wildlife experience with royal albatross and little blue penguins in Dunedin.
First, we take the Royal Albatross Centre tour where we get exclusive access to the royal albatross viewing hides where we can see royal albatross in their natural environment without disturbing them. We can’t believe how close we are getting to the albatross. It’s a unique wildlife experience in New Zealand!
We also tour the military battery of Taiaroa Head, before going to the Royal Albatross Cafe and waiting for our second tour at the Royal Albatross Centre, seeing little blue penguins on the Otago Peninsula.
When night falls, this is the best time to see the little blue penguins return in rafts back to their nests on Pilot Beach just below the Royal Albatross Centre. It’s one of the best places to watch little blue penguins in New Zealand.
So what do you think of the Royal Albatross Centre tours? Would you add them to your Dunedin travel itinerary? LUK in the comments.

-- About this video –
We’ve seen the little blue penguins once on the Pohatu Penguin evening penguin tour but today we are back for a day wildlife tour in Akaroa with Pohatu Penguins, ending in the evening with a special little blue penguin release into the wild.
The scenic tour in Akaroa starts with a trip around the Banks Peninsula to scenic viewpoints and the Akaroa Heads for some wildlife spotting from the cliffs. After that, the evening rolls in and we head to Flea Bay to New Zealand’s largest little blue penguin colony. Flea Bay is also home to the Pohatu Penguins rehabilitation centre where we watch a little blue penguin feeding and then some little blue penguins being released into the wild. It’s a super unique blue penguin tour in New Zealand. If you’re looking to experience New Zealand penguins on a New Zealand penguin tour, then definitely consider this one.
So what do you think of this penguin experience in New Zealand? Would you add this Akaroa scenic tour to your Akaroa travel itinerary? LUK in the comments!

Blue penguins at the Otago Peninsula in New Zealand
Blue penguins (also called little penguins or fairy penguins) are the smallest penguins in the world. Blue penguins are as cute as can be. Blue penguins go out before dawn, they fish all day, and they come back home after dusk. Because these little penguins are so small, if they were out in the daylight, they could become preys to eagles and other large birds. Once it is dark outside, blue penguins come back to their burrows in large groups. Blue penguins are skilled swimmers, but they are clumsy on the ground. Their procession, jumping over the rocks and walking uphill in the sand is funny to watch.
Blue penguins are common all over Australia and New Zealand. We had already seen the blue penguin colony of Philip Island outside of Melbourne, Victoria. But you can also observe them at the St Kilda Beach in Melbourne as well as in Tasmania. We filmed these fairy penguins on the Otago Peninsula outside of Dunedin on the South Island of New Zealand.
Despite the cold and rainy weather, we had so much fun watching these cute little penguins. We hope you do too.
