Penguins of The Falkland Islands ~ Antarctica Cruise
Mark and I visited the Falkland Islands on January 18th, 2012 as part of a South America & Antarctica cruise on the Holland America Line cruise ship, the Veendam. For the first time ever, we split up on our shore excursions in the Falkland Islands. He wanted to learn about the 74 day war between the British and Argentina and I wanted to see penguins.
We both got our wish and I happily jeeped my way to the Bluff Cove Rookery with driver Sam, about 30 minutes away from Port Stanley. I was in heaven as I sat amongst thousands of Gentoo and a few King penguins. It was a great time to visit, because only some of the chicks were beginning to moult, so they were still nice and fuzzy. They were also at their most curious stage, courageous enough to wander away from their mothers and fathers to check out the large people hovering around.
I hope you enjoy my video and that your interest will be piqued to visit for yourself. If it is, please contact me at Sheila@ConnectionToCruise.com and I will be thrilled to help you plan an unforgettable experience to the White Continent and the Falkland Islands.
51º South - Pigs will fly and Penguins too [Falkland Islands]
No.2 Pigs will Fly and Penguins too
It is always hands on, you are always monitoring. There is very little time to have the autopilot switched on. Troyd Bowles is a pilot with FIGAS: The Falkland Islands Government Air Service. Flying to rugged and rural destinations across the archipelago, he serves as a vital link to the Islander community transporting everything from people to wild animals. The worst thing he finds are piglets—their smell can be hard enough for the pilot he says, let alone anyone else on the plane.
This is the third of seven videos in our series that capture the uniqueness, the quirkiness and the complexity surrounding the Falkland Islands, while ultimately providing more intimate insight into the islands as a whole.

Dancam Days - Feb. 24 - Falkland Island Penguins
On this voyage, we are taken to the beautiful but treacherous Falkland Islands. This was only the second time the Star Princess was able to send tenders ashore this season with unheard of weather: Two sunny days in a row.
Our faithful tour guides took us to Volunteer Point on an unexpectedly but hilariously bouncy off-road ride. What we saw at the end, was a thing of Falkland beauty...
The Falkland Islands
Recorded February 18, 2009.
The Falkland Islands are an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean, located 300 miles from the coast of Argentina. They consist of two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland, together with 776 smaller islands. Stanley, on East Falkland, is the capital. The islands are a self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom.
Stanley (formerly known as Port Stanley) is the capital and only true city in the Falkland Islands. It is located on the isle of East Falkland, on a north-facing slope, south of Stanley Harbour, in one of the wettest parts of the islands. As of the 2006 census, the city had a population of 2,115.
The video begins aboard the Star Princess as we sail into Stanley Harbor in the Falkland Islands. Next there is a tour of the town of Stanley complete with comments from our colorful local guide. Next is a visit to the penguin colony at Gypsy Cove. The video then concludes with our sail away from the Falkland Islands aboard the Star Princess.
You can see more of Gypsy Cove in my video @

Volunteer Point, Falkland Islands - A Day with the Kings Penguins!
Whether you are visiting the Falkland Islands for the day during a cruise or exploring by land, a trip to Volunteer Point should be very high on our list of things to do in the Falkland Islands. This is a very special place and one of the few where you can spot King Penguins in the Falkland Islands. Our day trip out to see the king penguins was a highlight among highlights of our two week trip to the Falkland Islands.

Falkland Islands - Best Place in the World to See Penguins
For those that want a longer video about my travels - here it is. It's also available as a podcast under Unmapped Travel Destinations. I'm so glad Lonely Planet book The World called Falkland Islands a country. It's the best place in the world to see Penguins. I learned of the falkland war and how what local life is in a country where significant amount of the population is the military.

Finding Penguins on the Falkland Islands
We visited a penguin rookery at Volunteer Point, near the town of Stanley in the Falkland Islands. This is not a casual trip, requiring 4WD vehicles to travel the 2 1/2 hours over dirt roads and fields of peat bogs to get there, but well worth the effort.
We found three species of penguins, the King Penguins, the Magellanic Penguins, and the Gentoo Penguins.
Take a look as we leave our cruise ship, the Coral Princess, via tender and travel in 4WD vehicles to Volunteer Point to see these magnificent animals.

King Penguins from Falkland Islands during Holland America Cruise to Antarctica
Two King penguins left their colony and hanging out nearby the town rearranging their feathers. This is referred as Pruning and it may take several weeks to complete. In the meantime, from what the local scientist told me, they cannot go to water for food. Therefore people around them need to stop disturbing behaviours so they use the precious and limited energy for only what they need... The Walebone Cove here this video was recorded is accessible via van shuttle from downtown Stanley.
This was Holland America South America and Antarctica cruise excursion.
Video was captured in 4K with my Nikon A900 camera mounted on SONY VCT-R100 tripod

Playing with Penguins in Falkland Island, Met a boy in Chile - Part 2
I can't believe I went around the most southern tip in the world right above Antartica! If you love penguins get ready to squeal! The falkland Island was one of the craziest places I ever visited because beside a bunch of Spanish speaking countries theres the Falkland Island where everyone has British accents and uses pounds and has british shops!
I also met the most amazing boy spontaneously...he took me on an adventure!

Visiting Buff Cove Penguin Rookery , Falklands Island with Pricness Cruises. Tour PSY-635
It’s not everyday you get to see wild penguins, I could of stayed all day watching them mess around, look after their brand new born chicks and catch fish in the sea for their young ones.
Before anyone says anything this is on an island called the Falklands Island which is a British owned island miles from homeland Britain. A couple bought this slot of land many years ago and still own it, they wanted the penguins to be untouched and left alone and only certain months a year you can visit them, they wanted to insure the penguins stayed healthy and lived their natural lives, and here it’s penguins before visitors, so if they want to walk in front of you you must stop, and never go into the white flagged areas! For me I’m so in love with this as I hate zoo’s especially when I see too many penguins in a tiny trapped enclosure. Hope you enjoy this photo as much as I enjoyed my day here!
