Penistone is a market town and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England, which had a population of 22,909 at the 2011 census. Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is 8 miles west of Barnsley, 17 miles north-east of Glossop, 14.2 miles north-west of Sheffield, and 29 miles east of Manchester in the foothills of the Pennines. The highest point, Hartcliffe Tower, is 1,194 ft above sea level and has views over the Woodhead bypass and the Dark Peak. The surrounding countryside is predominantly rural with farming on rich well-watered soil on mainly gentle slopes rising to the bleak moorland to the west of the town. Dry stone walls, small hamlets and farms surrounded by fields and livestock are synonymous with the area. The area is known for its rugged breed of sheep, the Whitefaced Woodland. The market town itself stands at its highest point around St Johns Church at around 250 m above sea level. However, the surrounding land rises well over 1,000 ft towards Cubley and Thurlstone Moors and out towards smaller hamlets at Carlecotes, Victoria, Dunford, and Crow Edge, elevated at points above 1,200 ft . There are several vantage points that afford panoramic views of the surrounding areas of West Yorkshire and North Derbyshire.

This film features views of the West and South Yorkshire countryside and towns from a Penistone Line Northern train, travelling from Huddersfield to Penistone. En-route the train calls at: Lockwood, Berry Brow, Honley, Brockholes, Stocksmoor, Shepley and Denby Dale before crossing the Penistone viaduct and arriving at Penistone railway station.

This film was made on an iPhone 5 mounted to the train window with a Joby suction smartphone mount, it was edited with iMovie on an iPad.

Penistone parkrun

On 13 April 2019 Penistone held its first official parkrun where 375 runners took part. Starting by the skate park on the show ground then, after a lap of the show ground, off down the trail towards Millhouse Green then back to finish on the far side of the show ground a total of 5km.

This is a short version of a video made in 1989 to promote travel along the Penistone Line from Sheffield to Huddersfield via Barnsley and Penistone.

Not much seems to have changed over the last 20 years. The trains are still the same.

It is one of England's most scenic railways and is supported by a Community Rail Partnership
