Liverpool is a city and metropolitan borough in North West England, with an estimated population of 491,500. Its metropolitan area is the fifth-largest in the UK, with a population of 2.24 million in 2011. The local authority is Liverpool City Council, the most populous local government district in the metropolitan county of Merseyside and the largest in the Liverpool City Region.
Liverpool is on the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary, and historically lay within the ancient hundred of West Derby in the south west of the county of Lancashire. It became a borough in 1207 and a city in 1880. In 1889, it became a county borough independent of Lancashire. Its growth as a major port was paralleled by the expansion of the city throughout the Industrial Revolution. Along with handling general cargo, freight, raw materials such as coal and cotton, the city merchants were involved in the Atlantic slave trade. In the 19th century, it was a major port of departure for Irish and English emigrants to North America. Liverpool was home to both the Cunard and White Star Line, and was the port of registry of the ocean liner RMS Titanic, the RMS Lusitania, RMS Queen Mary and RMS Olympic.
The popularity of the Beatles and other music groups from the Merseybeat era contributes to Liverpool's status as a tourist destination. Liverpool is also the home of two Premier League football clubs, Liverpool and Everton, matches between the two being known as the Merseyside derby. The Grand National horse race takes place annually at Aintree Racecourse on the outskirts of the city.
The city celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2007. In 2008, it was nominated as the annual European Capital of Culture together with Stavanger, Norway. Several areas of the city centre were granted World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in 2004. The Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City includes the Pier Head, Albert Dock, and William Brown Street. Liverpool's status as a port city has attracted a diverse population, which, historically, was drawn from a wide range of peoples, cultures, and religions, particularly from Ireland and Wales. The city is also home to the oldest Black African community in the country and the oldest Chinese community in Europe.
Natives and residents of the city of Liverpool are referred to as Liverpudlians, and colloquially as Scousers, a reference to scouse, a form of stew. The word Scouse has also become synonymous with the Liverpool accent and dialect.

Beatles Liverpool Journey
I made a weekend visit to Liverpool in July 08, arriving in Lime Street Station from London. First I headed for the Tourist Information Centre not far from the Station. Available there were many valuable resouces such as 'How to get to The Beatles Attractions in Merseyside'. The rest of the weekend was spent following this free map guide around central Liverpool and suburbs on foot and by local train and bus.
Day one afternoon was spent walking around Central Liverpool Mathew Street Cavern, Beatles Shops, Hard Days Night Hotel, and Albert Dock The Beatles Story, and Ferry on The Mersey.
Day two was spent first taking train and bus to Liverpool John Lennon Airport, then West Allerton Train Station where we set off on foot with map in hand. After a 10-15 minute walk we arrived at Paul's family home 20 Forthlin Road.
A further 20 minute walk and we arrived at John's family home Mendips, 251 Menlove Avenue. Just around the corner is Strawberry Fields and only a 10 minute walk further is Woolton Village with St Peters Church where John met Paul in 1957.
Further away on a bus ride was Penny Lane and in another suburb West Derby Village is the Casbah Club where it all began.
It is hard to describe the feeling of excitement in visiting these places of so much interest to me for more than 30years.
I look forward to returning to Liverpool again to walk in the suburbs and central city once more where John, Paul Ringo, George, Pete, Stu etc lived and played.

BUG! sings Penny Lane (Beatles) led by Sue
Penny Lane is a song by the English rock band the Beatles. It was written primarily by Paul McCartney but credited to the Lennon–McCartney songwriting partnership. The lyrics refer to Penny Lane, a street in Liverpool, and make mention of the sights and characters that McCartney recalled from his upbringing in the city.
Recorded during the Sgt. Pepper album sessions, and intended for inclusion, Penny Lane was released in February 1967 as one side of a double A-sided single, along with Strawberry Fields Forever, following pressure from EMI, the Beatles' record company, after several months' absence of new material. Although the song did not top the charts in Britain, it was still a top ten hit across Europe. The song made its LP debut on the US version of the band's Magical Mystery Tour album.
In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Penny Lane at number 456 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. (Wikipedia)
