Gus Skoog: Boatbuilder of Vinalhaven, Maine (1999) VHS
Follow the building of a 34 foot wooden lobster boat in an island boat shop.
Gosta Gus Skoog, was born in Sweden. In the 1920s he immigrated to the United States, to the island of Vinalhaven in Penobscot Bay.
His first boat shop was in Vinalhaven's Frog Hollow where he built mostly wooden boats under 35 feet. In 1954 Gus built a new shop on Sand's Cove to enable him to design and build larger wooden boats. Over 100 boats, including the 34 foot lobster boat Tammi, the subject of this video, were built there.
This was a one-man shop. Gus's boats were all oak framed and usually cedar planked with a planked down keel rather than a skeg construction, typical of those built further Down East. He said his boats were more stable out-hauling using his construction methods.
At 82 he build a smaller shop on Sand's cove where he designed and build Maine skiffs and boat models using lines taken off hist half models from which he built full-size boats.
There were dozens of small boat shops along the coast of Maine during this period. There are only a handful left today. This video is the only recoard we have of a boatbuilding shop from this era.
