Penong Windmill Museum - South Australia
A collection of windmills including Australia's largest
Penong Windmills, Eyre Highway, South Australia - HD
As you begin the long, straight drive from South Australia over to the West—it is no secret that there is not too much excitement to be seen on the Nullarbor Plain.
Enter—the Penong Windmill Museum! The last town before Border Village, Penong boasts a humble population. The township has long had the name of ‘town of windmills’ due to the lack of a pipe water, so there was always a number of windmills on the drive in, supplying water for the town. After the growth of solar pumps, residents banded together to restore the town’s great windmills, and create a museum for visitors passing through! Just off the main road—and a welcome break in the drive—the main attraction of the museum is ‘The Comet,’ one of only 15 of these windmills made in Australia. It was originally used to pump water for the steam train from Adelaide to Perth. It is HUGE, so it makes a great photo! ( Source: )

The sun goes down on an icon, the Australian Windmill
These ubiquitous windmills were, once upon a time, a very common sight all over Australia. While there are still quite a few scattered around, they are becoming fewer by the day. But of those left, many have had the sails taken off or have just been let go to rack and ruin. Only a small percentage still perform the job they were built to perform, with most being replaced by solar powered pumps! Give it a decade or two, and these iconic machines will be sought after as collectors pieces! A sign of the times I guess!
This particular example is a Southern Cross, which was one of the two main manufacturers in Queensland, the other being Comet. It has a 21ft sail span (the way they were measured) and can still be seen working on the Aramac Road, about 15km from Barcaldine, QLD. Southern Cross had a three legged frame with a rectangular tail and this differentiates them from the Comet four legged frame with their wedge shaped tail. The main sizes for both brands varied from 16ft to a few massive 35ft examples. Smaller versions were made but not used greatly on pastoral properties in QLD.
This is in memory of my Grandfather who was a 'Windmill Expert' from before WWII up until the late 1960s. A simple title which entailed the skills of an engineer, a mechanic, a hydraulics engineer, a builder and an all round indispensable guy when it came to water supply maintenance in that, our near past! Well done 'Soup'!

Giant of the outback. A windmill from Kenya station.
A windmill which stood on a grazing property in central Queensland for more than 80 years is part of the National Museum of Australia's collection. John and Pamela Seccombe donated the Simplex windmill to the Museum in 2009. The Simplex, made by the Intercolonial Boring Company in Brisbane, was erected on Kenya station, near Muttaburra, in the 1920s. It is on show in the Museum's Landmarks gallery, where it helps to tell an important story about water supply. Here, John Seccombe talks about the history and significance of the windmill, and the value of having it in the Museum collection. More:
