Large Field and Course Record Broken at 4th Penrith Triathlon
Sunday saw the fourth running of the Penrith Triathlon at Penrith Leisure Centre, organised by Eden District Council in partnership with Arragon's Cumbrian Triathlon Club. Amid a lot of hard work and local enthusiasm over 240 participants took part in the event, ranging from national level athletes to event regulars from across the UK and a number of novices giving a triathlon a go for the first time.
The overall race winner was Penrith man Jon Fletcher who hauled himself around a blustry route in a superb course record time of 1:05:03 -- quick in anybody's book! Equally impressive was Lizzie Spencer who won the women's race by 8 minutes in a time of 1:15:25, just under a minute outside the course record. Well done also to Mark Flannery and Karen Bridge for winning the Men's and Women's Vet categories and to Paddy Finn and Linda Tweddle for winning the Super Vet categories. The team relay category was won by The Toffee Men, made up Penrith based trio Danny Smith, Neil Boustead and John Mason.
Event organiser Jeff Marshall, from Eden District Council's Leisure Services Team was extremely pleased with how the event had gone: To have over 240 people take part in an event we set up on a whim in 2008 is absolutely fantastic, it's a huge compliment to the hard work of all involved that we've been able to attract some high calibre athletes from Scotland and the North of England, particularly when they enjoy the event and continue to compete every year.
Deserving of just as much, if not more, credit are those who gave the triathlon a real go, particularly those doing a triathlon for the first time or who only ever do one per year, who never had any designs upon winning, who disregarded the tried and tested advice and took it on without any training or too long a tapering period, without these people our event would lose so much of the enthusiasm which surrounds it.
We're particularly thankful to all those who contributed to the event and made it a most enjoyable experience for all those who took part and came to watch. All the individuals involved in ensuring this event was put on in the first place and then running smoothly deserve a colossal amount of credit for their efforts. Whether they were: one of Sarah's merry band of marshalling gods out on the course providing no little amount of encouragement and guidance; a local cycling shop owner who nagged and begged friends and suppliers into submission to provide equipment and their services; volunteering to help out at registration; a member of the leisure centre staff who had no idea what they were getting in for; a business owner who volunteered to referee and potentially lose a customer in the process, or the unfortunate family members of an EDC employee -- each and every one of them were fantastic, it would at best have been a far poorer and more disjointed event without them and more likely one which didn't exist at all.
In addition to individuals who contributed to the event a number of local organisations were vital in ensuring that the event took place. We would like to thank Ullswater Community College for the use of the fields and particularly the caretaker who opened gates at 9pm on Friday night! The use of over 300 cones donated by Enterprise Mouchel was equally vital, as was the loan of a quad bike and trailer organised by Lowther Estates and the effort put in by all those at Penrith Leisure Centre to accommodate the event. But particular praise should be reserved for the efforts of Arragon's Cumbrian Triathlon Club who provided much help and guidance in the run up to the event. The event has received some fantastic feedback from competitors, officials and spectators alike, with the continued support of these individuals and organization we hope it's something we can continue to build upon.
