Tap into Pensacola
It’s finally summer. The heat bears down on my skin. The sun rides high in the clear, blue sky, and all I really want, most days, is an ice-cold pint and a patch of grass to while the hours away.
Some other schmuck might settle for a watered-down Corona Light, but I know better. A day and place as extraordinary as this calls for something special. Luckily, Pensacola has its fair share of good brews — whether you prefer to do your mid-summer boozing in the sun or the dim light of a cozy bar.
Today, I’m setting sail for Pensacola Bay Brewery, located just steps from the live-oak-draped lawns of Olde Seville Square and within view of the brewery’s namesake body of water.
In the five years since they opened shop, founders Elliot Eckland and Mark Robertson have cranked out an impressive variety of crowd-pleasing creations, all of which pay homage to the city’s deep colonial roots. A visit to their taproom is almost like a trip to the museum — with less standing and a lot more hops.
Start with the DeLuna, a German Style Kolsch named after the Spanish conquistador who first colonized Pensacola in 1559. Then, reach for the Blackbeard Stout — my personal favorite — which harkens back to a time when pirates cruised the Gulf and — legend has it — buried their treasure along the sandy shores of Perdido Bay.
By the time you’ve sampled the brewery’s 15-odd varieties of beer, you’ll have drunk your way clear through the afternoon — and 450 years of Pensacola history. You’ll likely also be badly in need of a good steak.
Fortunately, McGuire’s Irish Pub is just a short walk away. The landmark restaurant and bar is famed around the world for its bizarre traditions, which include inviting guests to staple autographed dollar bills to the walls and ceiling and demanding that first-time patrons kiss a mounted moose head.
The pub also boasts a traditional oak-and-copper brewery, which churns out gallon after gallon of the pub’s five signature beers, as well as a rotating selection of seasonal brews.
The Irish Red is the crowd favorite and goes especially well with McGuire’s signature steaks. My recommendation? Go for the New York Strip, 16 ounces of prime USDA-certified, aged beef grilled over a wood fire and served sizzling in garlic butter.
It’ll cure what ails you and, probably, send you packing again for that warm patch of grass.

McGuire's St Patrick's Day 5k prediction run Pensacola, FL
The McGuire's 5k is a prediction run held in Pensacola Florida every year the week before St Patrick's day. Runners predict what time they will race the course in, and the closest times win. Watches are not allowed, however, there are also speed awards for fast runners. This year was their 35th time holding the race, which has made it into the largest prediction run in the United States. The race is Irish themed due to it's closeness to St Patrick's day as well as being hosted by the famous Irish restaurant, McGuire's. This year over 11,000 participants lined the course for one of the most epic races yet. The post race party has become quite legendary as well. They serve the infamous Irish wakes, which are limitless with race entry. The green drink consists of 1 1/2 ounces of 151 rum, 1 1/2 ounces of gold rum, 1 1/2 ounces of blue curaçao and topped off with orange juice. The blue curaçao and orange juice are what make the drink turn green! They also serve limitless beer and beef barley stew after the race.
This documentary promo was shot on March 10th 2012. All filming was done by Justin Sanders and Joel Hinrichs. Cameras included the Panasonic HMC 40, go pro hero, go pro hero 2, and a consumer grade sony camera for the time lapse. Justin Sanders was the steady cam operator and camera operator for interviews. Interview questions and b-roll were done by Joel Hinrichs. Color grading, editing, and mastering by Joel Hinrichs on Premiere Pro and After Effects CS5.5.

McGuire's Irish Pub
McGuire’s Irish Pub first opened in 1977 as a small neighborhood pub in a shopping center. In 1982 McGuire’s moved to its current location; Pensacola’s original 1927 Old Firehouse. Inside the pub you’ll find a turn-of-the-century, New York Irish Saloon themed 615-seat restaurant. In 1996, a second location, McGuire’s Irish Pub of Destin opened on beautiful Destin Harbor with the same great food and live Irish entertainment.
Kayak Fishing - Pensacola, Florida 9/13
My first attempt at filming a kayak fishing trip. The camera is an inexpensive Canon, shooting in 720p. My memory card maxed out after the first fish. This kayak is a Jackson Big Tuna, on which I have installed a trolling motor, which is steered with foot pedals.

Larry Kiker and Grand Resorts
In four years in office, my opponent Larry Kiker has shown he favors short-sighted, politically expedient actions over tough long term decisions that will benefit all residents. He boasts he has balanced the county budget. Bravo! A balanced budget is required by state law. Kiker likes to say he has reduced debt. Really? What he actually reduced are impact fees designed to help growth pay for growth (costing our schools and road projects $50 million in just the last 3 years). It’s almost as if Kiker is not aware that we are one of the fastest growing communities in the nation, with a $600 million transportation funding deficit.
Kiker’s lack of vision includes diverting $40 million from the Conservation 20/20 program. This program is vital to acquiring the environmentally sensitive lands that will support the explosive growth already programmed for Lee County. The 25,000 acres acquired so far are our best hedge against overbuilding and to provide valuable lands for flood attenuation, surface water quality improvements and drinking water supplies. Although Kiker’s most recent op-ed seems to take credit for the history of Conservation 20/20, less than 100 acres of conservation lands have been acquired since he took office.
He has had issues with accurate record keeping, which has led to a complaint to the Florida State Ethics Commission.
Kiker has done nothing, other than putting his name on a couple of error-riddled newspaper columns, to deal with the polluted water that is destroying our beaches and estuaries and damaging our reputation as a great place to visit and relocate. Voters recall that Kiker was the beneficiary of approximately $1 million of special interest funding during his 2012 political campaign. A large percentage of that funding came from Big Sugar interests which occupy lands south of Lake Okeechobee.
When you elect me, I will do better. Here’s why. I know our county. I’ve lived here for more than 40 years. I have the educational background and work experience to tackle these tough issues. My master’s degree is in education and urban and regional planning. I worked as principal planner for Lee County. I was a member of the grass roots team that got Conservation 20/20 off the ground 20 years ago.
I have business experience as the manager of operations for WCI Communities, and educational experience as an instructor at FGCU having developed and taught the course entitled The Economics of the Environment. I will use my skills and background to work with county, state and federal officials to start tackling, rather than avoiding, our problems.
Lee County is at a critical juncture. In less than 20 years, we will have one million permanent residents. Where will our water come from? Will we reinvigorate Conservation 20/20 to preserve natural areas or change our priorities and pave over our open spaces like other Florida counties have done? We do not need to worry about stimulating growth—we need to manage it so that our children and their children will love this place as much as we do.
As a candidate, I am offering voters integrity today and a vision for a livable Lee County tomorrow. When you vote for me in the August Republican primary, I will vote for your interests as a member of the Board of County Commissioners.

The Lioness (acoustic) in Pensacola, Florida 3/10/14
So it was the morning after Berto's birthday and we were in Raleigh, NC. It was the day after playing an amazing show with our friends, Lovebettie at The Black Flower. We stayed in town with some great people that night. The club was walking distance from where we stayed and we were able to leave all our gear set up in the venue. --A true blessing after any show, because you get to pack up the next day. No heavy lifting after a night of Rocking!
The Sunday after the show, we drove out midday to go check out Athens, GA. We had no plan other than recommendation to go to the city and meet people. So we did. As it turned out, we caught a comedy show; open mic stand-up at some random pub that had awesome local beer. We talked to strangers as we always do and got referred to as Motorhead when our well-dressed entourage entered comedy hour. I'm not making that up.
I remember shrimp quesadilla or something. I don't know. They had a menu. I ate. The beer was delicious. The comedy was totally entertaining. Especially for a Sunday open mic. We had fun. The SOCIO boys crammed into a bench that may have been a little too small for the 4 of us. We toasted to new places. This was our first stop beyond our usual tour-reach. I feel all jittery just writing about it.
Afterward, we got back on the road. It was late night and we scheduled one of the 4 of us as a driver to hang tight at the club. Safety is paramount to success when you're out there. I'm serious. You have to be careful. That's how we do when our wonderful tour van and driving is involved. Know who's gonna drive. Be cool about it.
I had an idea come to me as the street lights whirled by, Monday about 1 a.m. If. We drive all night. If. We add a negligible 2.5 hours to the journey; we would capture a special moment. I checked the map. I looked at the clock and then back to the map. Hey guys! Let's go to Florida! I may have woken someone up with this exclamation. You see if we just dip down into the Panhandle... see here... The Panhandle! Sunrise! We get there at 4:30/ 5 am. This time of year... I point to things and wave my phone around. Let's take the acoustic out to the beach. Let's catch the sunrise!
We had been heading to Austin, TX for five SXSW-related showcases. We were to meet up with Lovebettie in New Orleans at some point, but our travel plans were loose. We did some planning and decided to detour to Pensacola Beach, FL. We would still make Nawlins in good time. We would get there to party with Lovebettie. We didn't need sleep. We didn't need to find a public entrance to the beach. We were on tour.
