With Much expectations, i planned to visit Penukonda Fort, the second capital of VIjayanagara Empire. There were 365 temples in the Penukonda City. The idea was, people can visit one temple a day. Before my trip to penukonda from bangalore, i had a look into the Google and Youtube about Penukonda Fort. There were many good videos of Penukonda Fort which was
uploaded 3 Years ago. All expectations failed when we reached Penukonda.
Penukonda Fort and the Temples are now like a Haunted Place. Roads are being constructed to the fort top, and temples were destroyed using the JCB for the road construction. Some of the Temples of Penukonda are part of History now.

Lack of maintenance by the Andhrapradesh Tourism resulted in the complete Destruction of Penukonda Fort. The video shows a ruined temple on the top of Penukonda Fort. In the entrance of this temple, there is one pillar where there is no base and the pillar can fall any time.

Penukonda is a town in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is 70 km away from Anantapur (Officially: Anantapuramu) town.[1] This town is different from similar-sounding Penugonda. This town contains approximately 365 temples built during Vijayanagara rule. It was the second capital of Vijayanagara kingdom and served as a summer capital. Today, the place is famous for its Sri Kaleswar Swamy Ashram that draws people from world over.[2] The ashram houses a training centre for advanced spirituality, Sri Kaleshwar Soul University. It is located with in the ancient fort complex, beneath the backdrop of Penukonda Mountain with its dozen temples and hidden meditation caves.Penukonda-Hindupur stretch can become a counter magnet for automobile, pharmaceutical industries,I T , tourism perspectives as it is geographically centre to south India and proximity to Bengaluru

The word Penukonda has the meaning of “Big Hill” in Telugu language. This fort is located 70 kilometers away from the main district Anantapur. Kurnool Bangalore highway is the exact location of this fort. This fort has very scenic and picturesque locations and establishment point. The3 place Penukonda was once capital of Vijayanagar Empire. According to the various inscriptions found inside the fort, the Penukonda state was gifted by the King Bukka-I to this son Virupanna Udaiyar and at the time of Virupanna this fort was constructed. In various inscriptions, the name of this fort has been mentioned as Ghangari. The tough and deep involvement in architectural planning of the fort still seem as the ruins are the story teller of that period. This fort was the toughest wall against any type of intrusion. It is also believed that a water supply system was also there to bring water from the lake nearby for the population residing inside the fort but no practical evidences have been found. This fort was also used as a cooling and relaxing place for the royal family members of Vijayanagar Empire. According to an inscription the main portion of this fort was built in 1575 AD. This fort also has a basement which was constructed in traditional Hindu style of construction. But exterior of thefort has a mixed stamp of architecture. Hampi, located in this fort has the Islamic shade of architecture but other portions also have the incarnations and edges like temples. One of the major portions of this fort is “Babayya Darga” and this building is still symbolizing the communal harmony between Hindus and Muslims at that time. The amazing fact for the day that according to various inscriptions, which were written in Telugu language that Pooja in 365 temples located in this town always close at the time of Azan in the mosque located inside. Likewise activity also done by the Masjid priests. Around this fort, the famous temple of Lord Narsimhaswamy, Lord Kashi Vishwanatha and Lord Yogatma temples are located. All the temples are destroyed almost and the ruins are balance. Still from the ruins, the glory of the past can be ascertained. At the main entry point of this fort, a large statue of Lord Hanuman is welcoming. Just near the Lord Hanuman Idol, there is a mosque located on which walls, an inscription is found “Sadashiva” and this inscription has the date of 1564. Likewise the entrance gate of another mosque was constructed in Hindu style of architecture.

Penukonda Fort -Gagana Mahal,( Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh) the beautiful palace inside the fort was built in the year 1575 AD.After Krishna Deva Raya, Venkatapathi Rayalu, the Emperor of Vijayanagar. Gagana Mahal has both Hindu and Islamic style of architecture. The arch, vaults and plaster decorations depicts the Islamic style while most of the palace resembles the structures at Hampi. This beautiful citadel stands as the existing evidence of royal patronage enjoyed by the kings and queens of by gone era. There are number of destroyed and fragmented carved stones found on the hill, which depicts the glory of the past.
