Pre-Revolutionary Russia in photographs - Penza
Penza is on the Sura River, located some 625 km southeast of Moscow.
The city was founded as a Russian frontier fortress-city and to this day, remnants of the Lomovskaya sentry line built in 1640 have been preserved at the western edge of the city, and remains of earth ramparts dating from the mid-16th century are preserved in the city centre.
Until 1663, Penza was a wooden stockade with only a small settlement. Then in May 1663, the architect Yuri Kontransky arrived in Penza on the Tsar's orders to direct the construction of a fortress city as part of a wider fortress building program to protect Russia from attacks by Crimean Tatars. The initial construction consisted of a wooden Kremlin, a village, and quarters for the nobility, small tradesmen, and merchants………..
Little remains today of its historical past.

The Spine of Russia
Published on Jun 24, 2016
Russian and American journalists Mikhail Mordasov and Paul E. Richardson traveled 6,000 kilometers from Russia’s northwestern corner in the Arctic to Sochi, in the tropical climes along the Black Sea. They collected over 3,500 photos, recorded over 100 hours of interviews, and penned 100,000 words. Their epic journey is captured in two pathbreaking books: The Spine of Russia & Driving Down Russia's Spine.
The Spine of Russia is a 200-page, museum quality, hardcover photo book that is entirely bilingual (English and Russian). It is a vivid portrait of modern Russian life, and includes over 40 environmental portraits of “heroes” interviewed in depth by the journalists (each of whom was asked their definition of patriotism). Organized in a unique, non-linear style to allow readers to construct their own trip across Russia, this is a volume you will treasure for years to come.
Driving Down Russia's Spine is a 330-page travel essay book that includes the full story of the trip, intertwining fascinating subject profiles with digressions into historical and cultural themes relevant to understanding modern Russia. It is a story told with humor and with the insight derived from the author’s three decades of intimate interactions with Russia. You can read a sample story here.

For our region it's a big event. According to the documents it was Stalin's only visit to the front. And it happened in this region. Here this museum tells about the events that happened near the city of Rzhev during the days of the Great Patriotic War (Russian term for World War Two) and about the events that happened at the Rzhevsko-Vyazemsky bridgehead where Nazis ruled for almost 14 months. And here everywhere around, as Mikhail Ivanovich Nozhkin (a Soviet actor and writer) said, great, tough and long battles were happening.

Each of us wants our state to be strong. And I always ask the following question: Can a strong state be ruled by a week president, a week head of the state? It can't be that way. So that the government became strong, the head of state has also to be smart, strong and sometimes even tough. Because today the current situation demands that. And in the time when Joseph Stalin ruled the country, the situation demanded this 100 times more.

We had the gulag. We had other mistakes. People were punished. But our soldiers went into the attack. They were rising for the motherland, for Stalin. And that happened in this region. He is a kind of a flag which lead us to the victory. And he may have had mistakes, but we know them, and our pupils know about these mistakes. We tell them about them, we are not hiding them. And we also say about the glory he brought to us.

STORYLINE:
As the 137th anniversary of the birth of Josef Stalin is marked on Friday, the retelling of the former Soviet leader's triumphs have become increasingly fashionable during troubled times in Russia.
A bust of Stalin stands outside a house-turned-museum in the village of Khoroshevo, in the Tver region, where he is said to have stayed the night on his only visit to the front during World War Two.
Groups of students look around the two-room building where Stalin strategised with his generals in August 1943 as the Red Army battled to drive out the Nazi troops.

RUSSIA: STALIN'S FORMER HOLIDAY HOME TURNED INTO TOURIST ATTRACTION
Russian/Nat
One of the Soviet Union's most feared leaders - Stalin - has been turned into a tourist attraction in modern day Russia.
The former Communist dictator's holiday home on the Black Sea has been opened up as a hotel and museum.
Despite Stalin's reputation as a mass murderer his dacha is very popular with Russian holidaymakers and fully booked.
High above Sochi's Black Sea coast, hidden among the trees Stalin's former holiday home has been carefully renovated for its first season as a tourist attraction.
It may be an odd holiday location but is proving very popular with the Russians.
Visitors can take tea in the sitting room with a wax image of the man who sent millions to their death in labour camps.
Or they can reminisce over black and white photos or even have their picture taken next to one of history's most infamous tyrants.
Many who've slept in the hotel claimed to have heard Stalin's footsteps - it's all part of the experience.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
I have the sensation a link with the past. The past and the present meet here. It's as if he's standing next to us and looking at us. I think he's a great person and his great spirit continues to live here. I've asked the guard if his ghost is here.
SUPERCAPTION: Tamara, holidaymaker
The dacha has been divided up into 11 apartments including one containing the Man of Steel's' private sitting room and bedroom.
In these rooms he entertained the Chinese leader Mao Zedong, who presented him with the stationary set which still stands on Stalin's desk.
The hotel also contains a restaurant where diners can sample Stalin's favourite Georgian dishes.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
You feel that a great person lived in this place - when you're one of the masses you're a nobody but here you feel that you're a special and great person.
SUPERCAPTION: diner
Visitors can also play billiards at the same table used by Stalin and his cronies.
Until 1991 the dacha belonged to the state and was then handed over to the local co- operative who privatised it.
The most expensive room costs more than 200 U-S dollars a night although Stalin's modest bedroom is only about 150 dollars.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Now we have a lot of people who want to come and holiday here because they want to vacation where our former leaders used to come and they're mainly interested in its authenticity. For example Stalin's study, his bedroom and where he ate and where he took the cure, where he walked - all of this we've preserved. This year we are practically full up with bookings - 100 per cent.
SUPERCAPTION : Vladimir Shishkin, Director Stalin's Dacha
The dacha is in great demand with Russian pop stars and even politicians - General Pavel Grachev, the former defence minister has vacationed here.
