People's Park Limerick - Drone view
For all of you #Limerick lovers :) Here is video I made 2019/02/16 at People's Park with a view from over the memorial upon a giant pillar to Thomas Spring Rice, MP for the city of Limerick from 1820 - 1832, a 19th-century #Bandstand.
Description: Freestanding #limestone Greek Doric column surmounted by Portland stone sculpture of Thomas Spring Rice, erected in 1829, on a raised mound at the centre of the People's Park, formally Pery Square. Robed #sculpture facing northwest towards the Tontine Building on #PerySquare, standing on a plain limestone ashlar cylindrical base above a fluted limestone ashlar Greek Doric column. The column sits on an octagonal limestone ashlar base with projecting cornice and mutules. On the base there are three limestone steps in a circular format. Plaque on octagonal base reads: 'Thomas #SpringRice M.P. for the City of Limerick 1820-1832'.
Appraisal
Standing in the middle of this quiet leafy square, the monument gives a sense of the aspiration of grandeur of the newly fashionable part of Limerick as well as serving as a memorial to the influential Thomas Spring Rice. Spring Rice (1791-1866) was still alive, in his late thirties, an MP for the city, with a government post, and a landowner in County Limerick. He was extremely popular in the city. He was later 1st Baron Monteagle of Brandon, County Kerry. His initial election as MP in 1820 had involved the triumph of the Independent party, which represented the merchant interest and it broke a well established, conservative oligarchy that had dominated Limerick politics for many years. His supporters were involved in the building of Newtown Pery and it was fitting that his monument should have a prominent place in the new town. The statue was erected in 1829 by the Barrington family, who invested heavily in this part of the city and who anticipated further expansion, which was never realised. The renowned sculptor Thomas Kirk carved the statue. The statue was placed on top of the monument designed by Henry Aaron Baker in 1826.

Richard Lynch visits the people of Island Field & St. Mary's Park to see the aftermath of the devastating floods that have destroyed so many homes in the area and speaks to people in the community about how they have been affected. The Kings Island area of Limerick City -Saint Mary's Park and Lee Estate in particular - was worst affected with around 300 houses affected. While the emergency services have been assisting those people who wished to vacate their homes the majority of householders decided to remain in their homes. What was very apparent during the visit was the Limerick community spirit. Saint Munchins Community Centre in Killeely was established as a centre to care for people who had been evacuated from their homes and acted as a drop off centre for donations and also distributed meals to the community.

Curraghchase forest park county Limerick Ireland - coillte
There are over 300 hectares of rolling parkland, trails, mixed woodland, lakes and an arboretum at Curragh Chase. This planned landscape was the former home of the de Vere family, the most notable being Sir Aubrey de Vere who was a poet and an author. The façade of the former grand house sits proud on the hill overlooking the main car park and man-made lake. There are many wonderful features of the de Vere estate dotted around the Park for you to find, including; the impressive arboretum, a pet cemetery and a memorial cross.
For the nature lover, there are a number of Special Areas of Conservation (SAC’s) in the park, largely due to the presence of the Lesser Horseshoe Bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros). The hawfinch, a rare bird on Irish soils has frequently been seen at Curragh Chase, this bird appreciates the many hornbeam trees to be found within the Park. Coillte is currently involved in restoring native woodlands within important pockets in the park, including a native Yew woodland. Ducks and an array of waterfowl live and waddle in the area on and around the lake.
There is ample to do and see for an enjoyable day at Curragh Chase for all ages.
Entrance is 5 Euro
