Allegheny Adventure Expo planned for Johnstown area
Reported By: Lindsay Ward
Written By: Marc Stempka
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- A group of outdoor enthusiasts from the Cambria County area have come together and developed an event they hope will showcase the region's outdoor activities and hopefully draw more people to the area to benefit the economy.
The inaugural Allegheny Adventure Outdoor Expo is set for Oct. 3-5 in the greater Johnstown region and was coordinated in partnership with the Greater Johnstown and Cambria County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Allegheny Adventure Network.
Organizers announced the expo at a press conference at People's Natural Gas Park in Johnstown Tuesday morning. Their hope is to get people thinking about the greater Cambria County area as a destination for outdoor activities, but also to make residents aware of what they can do outdoors close to home.
People don't always realize that all around here within an hour radius whatever you want to do outdoors at whatever level, you can do it here, said Brad Clemenson, of Lift Johnstown.
Some examples include the different kinds of canoe and white water experiences that are available along area waterways.
We're going to try and open this event up for people with all those different interests, [including] flat paddling through the middle of Johnstown to white water paddling in Stonycreek Canyon, said Benscreek Canoe Club member Richard Bloom.
The Community Foundation for the Alleghenies Executive Director Mike Kane said organizers are hoping that by highlighting what is already in the area, that it will provide a boost to the local economy.
The study done by the Community for the Alleghenies showed that by bringing people into the community, creating more overnight stays, creating more restaurant visits, more shopping experiences, it's good because it's the money in the community, not out, Kane said.
Members of the Allegheny Adventure Network include the Greater Johnstown YMCA, Coal Tubin', Benscreek Canoe Club, Laurel Highlands On- and Off-Road Bike Association, Greater Johnstown Athletic Ski Club, Mountain Laurel Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Western Pennsylvania Orienteering Club, Johnstown-Altoona Geocaching Association, Greater Johnstown and Cambria County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Community Foundation of the Alleghenies and the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
Nicholas Martin found guilty of first-degree mur
By: Erika Stanish
A family is finally seeing justice after a jury finds Nicholas Martin guilty of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his former girlfriend, Alyssa Forsyth.
The verdict comes more than two years after Forsyth's tragic death.
After four days, the trial ended the way prosecutors wanted, not only for murder in the first degree, but also abuse of a corpse.
Forsyth's family filled the courtroom for the closing arguments and verdicts Monday afternoon, and had been there each of the four days the case was in trial.
The defense argued that Martin never planned to kill Forsyth, and that it was actually Forsyth who contacted Martin to pick her up the night Martin stabbed Forsyth over 100 times after a heated argument they said Forsyth invoked.
Martin's father told 6 News those types of arguments were all too common in their relationship.
I think one thing people learn to do when they're driven by addiction is push other people's buttons to do what you want them to do, and I think she was very good at that, said Mike Martin, Nicholas Martin's father.
During the commonwealth's closing arguments, the prosecutor said that in general, Martin was a rage-filled, angry man without friends, reminding jurors of the brutal and deadly stabbing.
The commonwealth's attorney said Martin had plenty of time to think about what he was doing when he stabbed Forsyth with a screwdriver, then ran to the kitchen to get a knife and continue stabbing her repeatedly before strategically dumping her body in a park.
After about four hours of deliberation, the jury validated the prosecution's case.
On Monday, Forsyth's family wore purple and black to represent domestic violence and death as the jury gave them justice.
The crime Martin has been convicted of carries a mandatory life sentence, though no sentencing date has been set yet.

End of the Line
This documentary short offers a nostalgic look at the steam locomotive as it passes from reality to history. In its heyday, the big smoke-belching steam engine seemed immortal. Now, powerful and efficient diesels are pushing the old coal-burning locomotives to the sidelines, and the lonely echo of their whistles may soon be a thing of the past.

34 family members arrested in drug bust; $400k in cocaine seized
ELYRIA, Ohio - Elyria Police, Lorain Police and the Lorain County Sheriff's Department arrested 34 people—all related to each other in some way—in connection with $400,000 of cocaine seized.
The investigation started last year and ramped up in the past two months, culminating in the arrests Friday, March 13 and Monday, March 16, investigators said during a press conference Wednesday.
Authorities seized 3.4 kilos of cocaine, worth $400,000, five guns and $85,000 in cash.
The leaders of what's been dubbed the Burns, Milton and Tillman Drug Trafficking Organization by authorities are Jarvis Burns, 33, of Sheffield Lake, who paid for the cocaine, and his cousin Travis Milton, 32, of Elyria, who orchestrated large-scale buys from two dealers in Cleveland.
The large-scale transactions were at Burns' and Milton's grandmother Grace Milton's home on Tattersal Court in Elyria.
They bought $43,000 of cocaine from Christopher Craig, 43 and Bernard Washington, 44, both of Cleveland, investigators said.
