Return Visit
Return Visit, 2014
Painted bronze, 31’ tall
38,000 pounds
This monumental painted bronze statue was created by Seward Johnson, an international recognized figurative sculptor. It depicts Abraham Lincoln presenting the contemporary “common man” with the Gettysburg Address, underscoring its continuing relevance in today’s society.
Return Visit has come to Peoria in anticipation of the Illinois Bicentennial, a year-long celebration to commemorate our state’s 200th birthday. Peoria riverfront museum will celebrate the birthday of our beautiful state with an exhibition that recognizes significant people that called the “Land of Lincoln” their home. Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth President of the United States, is one of the country’s most enduring symbols of democracy. On October 16, 1854, Lincoln delivered a speech in Peoria that marked a major turning point in his ascension in the political arena and serves as a testament to his vision, statesmanship and dedication to humanity.
On November 19, 1863, four and half months after the Union armies defeated those of the Confederacy, Abraham Lincoln delivered one of the most powerful speeches in American history, the Gettysburg Address. This speech reminded the American people what they had fought for. Lincoln believed “common folk,” not just the wealthy, should control the government, for only they would guarantee that laws would continue to enable everyone to prosper. For Lincoln, nothing was more important than continuing to fight for what the soldiers who perished on the battlefield fought for-the right to be free!
