Cave of Perama (Ioannina, Epirus)
A three-storey palace, with incomparable beauties and exceptional ornaments, which are the most beautiful ones in the Balκans, has been created by nature in the Goritsa hill which is located in the picturesque village of Perama.Τhe ornaments are the richest and most beautiful due to the fact that they have been collected by nature.Ιt consists of 19 kinds of stalactites and stalagmites, whereas in other caves there are only 6-10 kinds. The cave is located in the South of the hill Goritsa in the highest level in the centre of the village of Perama. It is 10 metres high from the level of the lake Pamvotis and in the altitude of 480 metres.Pamvotis lake is famous for the legend of Kyra Frosini and Ali Pasha. The existence of the cave was already known since the start of the last century. During the Italian bombardments of 1940 it was used as a shelter by the locals. Shortly after the second world war spelaeologists Anna and Ioannis Petrocheilos made the first scientific mapping of the cavity. At 1952, a part of the cave (approximatelly 1km- out of 4/5km total) became accessible for visitors.

Perama Cave in Greece
Το σπήλαιο του Περάματος στα Ιωάννινα - Perama cave in Ioannina
Perama Cave is geologically linked to the presence and evolution of Lake Pamvotis. Dated to about 1.5 million years it was part of the lake’s riverbed section when the waters of Pamvotis covered the entire basin of the city of Ioannina and the hill Goritsa was an island.
In 1956 the tooth of a cave bear, the first ever discovered in Greece, was found in this cave by Anna Petrocheilou. An excavation, conducted by Ioannis Petrocheilos in the same year, discovered teeth and bones of an entire cave bear family, which lived some 600.000 years ago. He also observed a new species of dolichopod. This was examined by the French bio-speleologist Chappuis, who named it Dolichopod petrocheilosus in honour of its finder.

A Greek Odyssey 2/2 | Tales From The Parthenon | (Vikos Gorge, Perama Caves, Corfu, Athens)
In the spring of 2004, my girlfriend Mandy and I took a trip to the mainland of Greece. We visited the Oracle at Delphi, the monasteries of Meteora, the walled city of Ioannina, the slate villages of Zagoria, the Perama Caves, the forts of Corfu and the Acropolis and old Olympic stadium in Athens.
These two videos are not really 'travel' vids as I usually make them, they're more like personal photo albums (ones that move!), but we managed to capture a taste of Greece and a time in our lives which we would like to share with you.

Alistrati Cave, Greece
The cave is placed 50km away from Serres, 25 km from Drama and 55 km from Kavala.
It is considered to be the most beautiful and most decorated cave in Greece and probably in Europe where nature revealed its power in creating ornaments and impressive rock formations.
Description of the Cave
The antechamber of the cave is 8m height. It's from this point that start different high galleries folly decorated with stalactites and stalagmites.
The main branches of the cave are developed to the left and to the right of the entrance starting from a huge chamber, the Teception Chamber of a width of 60 m, a length of 100m and height of 20-30m
It's in this chamber that nature decided to demonstrate its power in creating ornaments
What fascinates the most is the huge stalactites and those pure white forming draperies. There are other chambers and their height is quite the same 8-10m.
From the reception chamber and towards the left, emerges a second passage, quite parallel to the first .In this gallery there are even some red stalagmites which are called The flames. The height of these formations reaches 35m. Somewhere in this passages the two main passages join each other and continue with an always increasing width and height while from the ceiling one can see suspended huge and majestic stalactites of a height of 15m.
Inside the cave there are countless floors which are still unknown
ALISTRATI Cave deposites:
Very impressive is the big variety of stalactites and stalagmites inside the cave mostly because of the difference of their shapes and their age
The older stalactites are mainly in the galleries which are on the right side of the entrance. On the other hand the infant stalactites on the left side of entrance .
STALACTITES:
They are the limestone tubular formations which are growing from the ceiling and downwards. Their length fluctuates between few centimetres and many metres
STALAGMITES:
They are formed as the water drops, which carry acid carbonate, fall on the ground under a stalactite. When a stalactite meets a stalagmite, we have a new formation which is called column
HELICTITES:
It's a rear kind of stalactite which is developed on the sides, on the floors even on the ceilings of the caves, towards many directions (up, side and down)
SHIELDS:
They are being developed as the water comes out through very thin fissures of the rock. Many times their diameter is of some metres.
PEARLS:
They are small formations like spheres
THE GOUR:
They are another kind of formation which is also very interesting. Small barriers of calcium carbonate which are placed on the floor of the cave. The creation depends on the rainfall in the area of the cave
On Gour evolve a rear fauna
The egg- shaped and the Tumour - shaped are different kinds of formatious. They are dark - coloured and usually found shaped.
The Cauliflower- like'' formation is another type of cave deposites. We can find them usually on the main body of a stalactite or a stalaguite.
And finally the Heccendrites'' in a variety of shapes.
Climate:
Because of the thin limestone layers above (10-30m) the temperature of the cave is quite high (15-17oC)
Temperature is stable even in the winter because the airing of the cave is less than the proper
In May humidity is high (95-105%) and it's quite stable all year long
The average quantity or carbon dioxite is 600PPM(0.06%). According to a study of the atmospheric conditions of the cave all chambers are sufficiently air-filled. The temperature inside the cave is stable all year long for the formation of a cubic centimeter of a stalactite it will take at least 100 years.
According to Dr.Seeman, the Austrian official researcher of the cave, the last time a rock fell was 700.000 years ago.
