Peranakan Museum - Singapore
Within walking distance from the Central Fire Station in the Civic District, discover the Peranakan Museum.
Sheltered in an elegant edifice built in 1910 and formely known as the Tao Nan School, the Peranakan Museum is the living memory of Singapore's Peranakan community. The Peranakan Chinese or Baba-Nonya are the descendants of the 15th and 16th century Chinese traders who settled down in the Southeast region and married local Malay or Indonesian wives. As a result a unique and rich culture influenced by Chinese, Malay and Indonesian customs has emerged. With a special emphasis on the Chinese Peranakans, the Peranakan Museum presents a journey to the origins of the Peranakan community, unveiling its customs and traditions.

Home of a Peranakan Family since 1861
The Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum is located in Melaka, a World UNESCO Site. The house is a combination of three terrace lots that were acquired by the Chan family in 1861. Four generations lived in the house before it was opened as a museum in March 1985.
Today the museum is still managed by the family with a vision of reviving the Malaysia’s Peranakan identity and heritage. By preserving this house for visitors and students the museum hope to honour the Peranakan spirit, keeping it alive for many generations to come!

The Peranakan Museum is a museum in Singapore specialising in Peranakan culture. A sister museum to the Asian Civilizations Museum, it is the first of its kind in the world, that explore Peranakan cultures in Singapore and other former Straits Settlements in Malacca and Penang, and other Peranakan communities in Southeast Asia.[1] It is housed in the Old Tao Nan School building at Armenian Street, which served as an extended wing to the artefact collection of Asian Civilisations Museum.
On January 1, 2006 the Museum, known then as ACM 1[1] closed the Armenian Street wing for a major revamp. At its closure, the museum management chose Peranakan culture theme over a children's museum and a Chinese ceramic museum as their new showcase in the Tao Nan School space. This enabled the Museum to house the world's most distinctive and comprehensive Peranakan museum collection of artifacts and wares, with a potential annual visitorship numbers of 112,000 people. Also, the revamp enabled 25 per cent more exhibition space for contextual displays for different aspects of Peranakan home and lifestyle. It also includes plans for Peranakan-themed eateries and shops in the row of four shop-houses adjacent to its building. More info please visit:
