single cell
single cell showcases a series of portraits taken in April 2012 with a single-pixel digital camera, presented as part of the Townsville Collective Portrait Exhibition, at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, Townsville, Australia. The work is a response to a call for submissions for World Pinhole Photography Day 2012: the provocation to build a camera from its basic elements led to the notion of building a digital camera pixel by pixel. The camera scans the space in front of it under user control, revealing spectral forms which emerge from the darkness of the studio, faces without eyes returning the gaze of a cyclopic machine.
Townsville Travel Guide - An Australian Exceptional Experience
Townsville Travel Guide - An Australian Exceptional Experience
Northern Queensland's often-overlooked major city is easy on the eye: at Townsville's heart is its handsome, endless esplanade, an ideal viewing platform to fabulous Magnetic Island, a mere ferry ride offshore. A better museum and aquarium you'll struggle to find in Queensland, and it's a pedestrian-friendly city, its grand, refurbished 19th-century buildings offering loads of landmarks. If in doubt, join the throngs of the fit and fabulous marching up bright red Castle Hill to gaze across the city's dry environs.
Townsville is a city on the north-eastern coast of Queensland, Australia. Townsville is Australia's largest urban centre north of the Sunshine Coast. Considered the unofficial capital of North Queensland by locals, Townsville hosts a significant number of governmental, community and major business administrative offices for the northern half of the state. It is in the dry tropics region of Queensland, adjacent to the central section of the Great Barrier Reef. The city is also a major industrial centre, home to one of the world's largest zinc refineries, a nickel refinery and many other similar activities. The Port of Townsville is also being expanded to allow much larger cargo ships from Asia and the world's largest passenger ships to visit. It is an increasingly important port due to its proximity to Asia and major trading partners such as China.
Popular attractions include The Strand, a long tropical beach and garden strip; Riverway, a riverfront parkland attraction located on the banks of Ross River; Reef HQ, a large tropical aquarium holding many of the Great Barrier Reef's native flora and fauna; the Museum of Tropical Queensland, built around a display of relics from the sunken British warship HMS Pandora; Castle Hill or as it was originally known Cootharinga, the most prominent landmark of the area and a popular place for exercise; The Townsville Sports Reserve; and Magnetic Island, a large neighbouring island, the vast majority of which is national park.
The historic waterfront on Ross Creek, site of the original wharves and port facilities, has some old buildings mixed with the later modern skyline. However, the central city is dominated by the mass of red granite of Castle Hill, 286 metres (938 ft) high. There is a lookout at the summit giving panoramic views of the city and its suburbs, including Cleveland Bay and Magnetic Island. There are a number of parks scattered throughout the city, including three botanical gardens — Anderson Park, Queens Gardens and The Palmetum.
Townsville is characterised as a tropical savanna climate (Köppen climate classification Aw). Owing to a quirk of geographical location, Townsville's winter rainfall in particular is not as high as elsewhere in the eastern coastal tropics of Queensland, such as Cairns. The Australian Festival of Chamber Music is an international chamber music festival held over ten days each July in Townsville. The festival has been running since 1991, and attracts many acclaimed international and Australian musicians. Townsville also has its own orchestra, the Barrier Reef Orchestra.
Townsville is on the coast and enjoys an average of 320 days of sunshine a year. It is an appealing place for locals and a great jumping off point for visitors, especially to Magnetic Island which is only 25-45 minutes by passenger or car ferry. A great spot for visitors wanting a taste of outback Australia while not venturing far from the coast. It offers a quiet cosmopolitan feel with its good choice of restaurants & bars but also has a relaxing siesta style during the hottest parts of the day in high summer. Townsville takes great pride in being the unofficial Capital of North Queensland.

Jennifer Herd_Warrior Woman_ 061208_ PT3Warrior Woman
This is an exhibition of work by prominent contemporary urban indigenous artist Jennifer Herd titled Warrior Woman”. Jennifer Herd will present a talk about her art practice at 4pm. The Opening will be at 2pm. Free Admission.
Jennifer Herd is a founding member of ProppaNOW, an artist-run initiative which also includes Vernon AhKee, Tony Albert, Bianca Beetson, Richard Bell, Andrea Fisher, Gordon Hookey, and Laurie Nilsen .
ProppaNOW provides a constantly innovative approach to Aboriginal Art and urban expression in Australia and seeks to challenge the position that is often ascribed to Aboriginal people and culture within the national Australian context.
Jennifer Herd’s work uses strong symbolic forms and rich surfaces to address the role of women in contemporary indigenous society and to commemorate the heroic survival of indigenous people — first in the face of invasion and then in conditions of social inequality. She often combines buttons and textiles, stitching and sewing associated with ‘women’s work’, in the creation of traditionally male implements of war.
Jennifer Herd Bio:
Born in Brisbane , Queensland , she lives and works in Brisbane . Her current mixed media works look at the impact of frontier conflicts in colonial Australia and reflect on the issues concerning Aboriginal people. She holds a Master of Visual Arts degree from Queensland College of Art and is currently undertaking a Doctorate of Visual Art. Some recent exhibitions and awards include: Thiess Prize 1st prize winner, Dell Gallery, Griffith University, South Bank 2003; Strand Ephemera, at the Perc Tucker Gallery, Townsville 2004; ‘Cultural Copy’ at the Fowler Museum, Paul Getty Gallery in California in 2004; ‘There goes the neighbourhood’ at the ProppaNOW studios in 2006.
