Perfect North Slopes Opens in November
LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (Scott Dimmich) -- All this cold weather is perfect for at least one thing, hitting the slopes. Perfect North Slopes opened Friday afternoon for an early season bonus weekend. The operation in Dearborn County has been able to make a lot of snow during those frigid nights we had this week. Local 12 Meteorologist Scott Dimmich headed there to get a look. It's not every year you can say you've been skiing in the tri-state in November. But skiers and snowboarders aren't waiting until December to shred some powder at perfect north slopes. I think there's only been a handful of times that we've opened in November. We've probably got 65 to 70 percent of our terrain covered with snow. Weve had a great cold snap and we're taking advantage of it. Usually, no snow means no show. But our recent stretch of colder than average temperatures means an earlier than average start to snowcats, snowguns and ski lifts. We try to get open as soon as we can based on the weather. Obviously, the forecast this week has been great and wonderful for snow making. When we get open early, everybody loves that. Even before the latest tumble in temperatures, Perfect North has been grooming more than just the slopes. I would say the two largest improvements our guests are going to see are the 8,000 square foot deck that's been completely rebuilt. We also have two brand new snow cats. Quite an investment which helps us get the hill ready and open. And make the conditions as great as possible. Perfect North is looking to have more than just an early start to the season. They're working to give their customers a more perfect experience.
Special Olympics KY holds Winter Games at Perfect North Slopes
LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (Brad Underwood) - Perfect North Slopes in Lawrenceburg is hosting a special event this week.
Special Olympics Kentucky is holding its Winter Games there.
The opening ceremonies took place Sunday evening.
Dozens of athletes arrived before the Opening Ceremonies to get in some extra practice on the slopes.
Over two days, more than 100 athletes will compete in this year's Winter Games.
County by county and team after team, all of this year's Special Olympians and their coaches march to the base of hills at Perfect North Slopes.
This year marks the 36th year of the Winter Games and the 19th time Perfect North has played host.
Steven Heltsley has competed in all 19 of those Winter Games.
My first year I couldn't ski at all and now I'm over here doing all this advanced plus, said Steven.
When asked if he sometimes get scared, Steven says that he just doesn't let himself get caught up in feeling scared. No I don't get scared, said Steven. It's on your mind, if you think about it, you get scared.
After all the teams were introduced, the torch made its way to the cauldron.
For Steven's mom, Sue Crowley, watching her son compete and win comes with mixed emotions.
[I'm] scared at times, but it's amazing to watch him, said Sue.
With the torch lit and oath repeated. The games were opened.
And before they get some rest, members of the Cincy Ski Team showed off with some tricks.
On Monday, many of the athletes will be paired with members of the Ski Team.
We will pair them with their athletes to practice ski, learn to ski, said Special Olympics Kentucky Director Trish Mazzoni. Then we will actually run time trials tomorrow [Monday].
Practice runs will be held beginning at 10:30 a.m. Monday morning. Those are followed by lunch and then time trials begin at 1 p.m.
Nick Goepper returns to Perfect North for Winter Welcome Rail Jam
LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (WKRC) - United States Olympic skier Nick Goepper returned to his native Indiana on Saturday to take part in an event at Perfect North.
Goepper, who won a silver medal in the 2018 Winter Olympics and a bronze in the 2014 Winter Olympics, took part in the Winter Welcome Rail Jam, where he was pulling off stunts on the pipes, judging others' tricks, and stopping to take a few pictures with fans.
Cold and snow is a mixed bag for Perfect North
LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (Perry Schaible) -- This winter's cold and snow may be bad for some businesses, but overall, it's been good for Perfect North in Southeast Indiana. This has been the fifth snowiest winter on record. The entire month of January was colder than usual. Sometimes, Chip Perfect says the weather is a double-edged sword. The cold temperatures are great for snowmaking. Perfect North has a huge snow base, one of the biggest the business has had at this time of year. However, sometimes it has been a little too cold and snowy for some skiers and snowboarders to come out. Travel can be tough. There are always some skiers and snowboarders who come out to take advantage of the weather.Chip Perfect does say the weather pattern we've seen more than once this winter, with colder temperatures earlier in the week and then milder on the weekend, is great for crowds. Perfect North says its night crew is out every night, grooming the snow. The crews were out overnight into Friday morning making sure the slopes are ideal for the weekend.Perfect North opens every day at 9:30.
Perfect North folks root for Nick Goepper in Olympics

Olympic skier Nick Goepper is favored to win a medal in the event.Though he grew up in Hidden Valley, Indiana, Goepper learned to ski on the slopes of Perfect North. Chip Perfect remembers Goepper's early training. Well, we're all really excited about Nick being in the Olympics and representing this area, Southern Indiana. We all remember Nick here at the ski area from an early age because he had that wow factor even as a 12 year old. When he got to 14 or 15, when Nick was in the park everybody would stop what they're doing and watch him because he was doing awesome stuff back then.Perfect says they are ready to celebrate if Goepper brings home the gold.
