The Perfume Pagoda, known locally as Chua Huong or ‘inner temple’, is at the centre of a very revered and sacred site featuring a maze of mainly Buddhist temples built into the limestone cliffs of Huong Tich. At the heart of this complex lies the Perfume Temple or Perfume Pagoda in the Huong Tich Cave. It is believed that the first temple was built here in the 15th century, although legend declares that the site was actually discovered over 2,000 years ago by a Buddhist monk who was meditating nearby. The mountain foothills are an area of great natural and spiritual beauty filled with streams, tropical plants and temples. There are many pagodas to visit, each offering a different shrine, most of which are Buddhist although one or two are animist. The Perfume Pagoda attracts pilgrims and tourists seeking good luck from the stalagmites and stalactites inside the cave which have been named according to the individual blessing they can bestow. Dun Tien offers prosperity and Nui Co offers the chance of giving birth to a girl whilst Dun Gao translates as a ‘rice stack’ to those hoping for a bountiful harvest.Thank you for visiting my channel.

The Perfume Pagoda, outside Hanoi in Vietnam's north, is the country's most revered religious site. The landscapes are beautiful as is the temple. The day trip from Hanoi is pretty tightly structured - which detracts from the experience.
Vietnam Perfume Pagoda, rivers and cable cars
Vietnam is a beautiful country, and this was a gloriously sunny day to explore the Perfume Pagoda tour, which I booked from Hanoi.
Temples are not for everyone, but this tour includes a delightful river journey and also the cable cars, which I found most enjoyable.
Hope this gives you an idea of what a lovely, scenic country Vietnam is.

Perfume pagoda is located 65kms away from Hanoi. To go there you need to catch a boat and then walk up to the hills and then finally a c cable car and more walking required.. time required for sight seeing is around 4 hours from the boat jetty.

The entrance to the vast and mysterious Perfume Pagoda and Huong Tich Cave resembles that of an open dragon’s mouth and is decorated in ancient Chinese letters which translate to ‘first grade cave of the South World’, this writing dates back to 1770. Inside the cave are many statues carved from green stone which decorate an intricate shrine, including one of Lord Buddha and another of the Buddhist goddess Quan Am. Smooth stalactites and stalagmites also fill the cave which are constantly touched by pilgrims believing them to deliver miracles and good luck. You will find the temple very cool inside and also very busy especially during the days of the Chua Huong festival which lasts from January to April. It’s well worth taking time to stop and enjoy the view en-route to the temple as the scenery is very interesting, dotted with fruit trees including apricots and medicinal herbs grown by local farmers. Other temples to see within the complex include the Vong Temple, Thuyet Kinh Cave and Thien Son Pagoda.

It's a half day trip to the Perfume Pagoda. I took the hiking trail going up to the mountain. It took about an hour to get there and I forgot to film that part of the trail. It was a good day to go outside of Hanoi.

Perfume Pagoda (Huong Pagoda) is a big complex of Buddhist temples and shrines built into the Huong Tich mountains. Getting to the pagodas requires a journey first by road, then by river, then on foot or by cable car.
Travel from Hanoi by car for two hours to My Duc, then take a small boat. This entertaining boat trip travels along scenic waterways between limestone cliffs.
The price to ride on the cable car is VND80,000 each way. You may find the boat ride & the cable car up into the hills worth it in itself.
There are numerous pagodas around the site and strewn over the mountain. It is thought that the first temple was a small structure on the current site of Thien Tru which existed during the 15th century.
Legend claims that the site was discovered over 2000 years ago by a monk meditating in the area. He named the site after a Tibetan mountain where Lord Buddha practiced asceticism.
Many travelers make the trip out of faith, but clearly for others, religion is an excuse to get away from the grind.

The Perfume Pagoda is an amazing place to explore. It's a great place to learn about Buddhism in Vietnam and the Huong Pagoda Festival from Tet (Lunar New Year). Hiking to the top of the Huong Tich mountain is definitely recommended! Views in the Huong Tich cave are fantastic, being in Heaven's Kitchen is a great experience and rowing down the Yen River is beautiful and tranquil.
I went with Bach Dang Tourist, 41 Luong Van Can, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi. Very well organised, not too pricey and very enjoyable, would really recommend.

The Perfume Pagoda or Perfume Temple (Vietnamese: Chùa Hương) is a vast complex of Buddhist temples and shrines built into the limestone Huong Tich mountains. It is the site of a religious festival which draws large numbers of pilgrims from across Vietnam. The centre of the Perfume Temple lies in Huong Son Commune, My Duc District, former Ha Tay Province (now Hanoi). The centre of this complex is the Perfume Temple, also known as Chua Trong (Inner Temple), located in Huong Tich Cave.
It is thought that the first temple was a small structure on the current site of Thien Tru which existed during the reign of Lê Thánh Tông in the 15th century. Legend claims that the site was discovered over 2000 years ago by a monk meditating in the area, who named the site after a Tibetan mountain where Lord Buddha practiced asceticism. A stele at the current temple dates the building of a terrace, stone steps and Kim Dung shrine to 1686, during the reign of Le Hy Tong, at around the same time that Chua Trong was being constructed. Over the years some of the structures were damaged and replaced. The original statues of Lord Buddha and Quan Am were cast from bronze in 1767 and replaced with the current statues in 1793. More recently, damage was done during both the French and the American wars. Both the gate and the bell tower at Thien Tru Pagoda were destroyed, the bell tower rebuilt in 1986 and the gate completed in 1994.
