Perfume River Boat Trip-Hue, Vietnam
I took a relaxing boat ride on the Perfume River in Hue, Vietnam. The Perfume River, also known as the Huong River, gets its name from orchid flowers which fall into the river in autumn, giving the river a perfume-like smell.

Vietnam / Hue / Perfume River
I spent a lot of time on the perfume river. I lived 5 minute so off the local boat dock in Bao Vinh. Passing between homes, dividing the town, and stretching from the mountains to the ocean, its a beautiful life giving river for Hue. I of course was smoking a cigar on board my boat and spent the day smoking cigars and watching the beautiful water of the Perfume River.

The city is located in central Vietnam on the banks of the Perfume River, just a few miles inland from the East Sea. It is about 700 km (430 mi) south of Hanoi and about 1,100 km (680 mi) north of Ho Chi Minh City. The North and West side borders Huong Tra town; the South borders Huong Thuy town, and the East side borders Phu Vang district and Huong Thuy town. Located on the two banks of the Perfume River or Perfume River downstream, north of Hai Van Pass, 105 km from Danang, 14 km from Thuan An Seaport, 14 km from Phu Bai International Airport and 50 km from Chan May Port. The natural area is 71.68 km2, the population in 2012 is estimated at 344,581 people. As of 2018, the city population is 455,230 people (including those who are not registered residents).
Flight from Hanoi to Hue and Evening Walk to Perfume River - Vietnam 4K Travel Channel
Back from Ha Long Bay to Hanoi, we want to visit the famous Vietnam Museum of Ethnology. But it is closed. Actually we should have known better, because almost all museums in southeast Asia are closed on Mondays. So we allow ourselves a coffee before we go to the airport to fly from Hanoi to Hue.
The flight itself only takes about one hour. As we fly over the Bay of Tonkin, there is relatively little to see, except water and clouds. However the approach to Hue is interesting. Although the twilight falls already, one can see the vast fish farms and rice fields.
The airport of Hue was founded by the American troops during the Vietnam War as an air force base of Phu Bai. During the Tet Offensive and the Battle of Hue, it was of special significance. Since 2002, the airport has been approved for international air traffic. The 10 km long road to the center of Hue is by our standards relatively poorly lit, so for us is not much to see.
After we have checked in to our hotel, we still want to find out a little about the area and take a walk to the perfume river.
The naming of the river is not completely clarified. Locals tell us that in the past, spices were cultivated along the river. Farmers irrigated the fields with water from the river and it was always a pleasant smell in the air.
However, the name can have its source in poetry. A good feeling and melodic names play an important role in Vietnam. Women's names often derive from flowers. Buildings are built according to Feng Shui. Perfume gives a good feeling.
Others say, that the 80 km long river runs through many woods with aromatic plants and brings a pure and fresh aroma to Hue. Anyway, because of its beautiful relaxing environment the river is a popular destination for both tourists and locals.
Already after a short way we reach Bến Toa Kham, the pier for dragon boats, where the tourists start their boat trips on the river. Some boats already seem to be ready for departure. A park which is adorned with modern sculptures was laid out along the quay. It is a popular meeting place for young people and cultural groups, such as dance groups. A restaurant, illuminated in various colors, attracts attention.

Perfume River with the shimmer blue limpid color, is like a pearl in the sun. On both sides of the river, there are many interesting see sights such as: the forbidden citadel, town, gardens, pagodas, towers and temples...etc, and their reflections in the waters make the lovely river even more poetic and romantic. For a long time, the blue limpid Perfume River have become the symbol of Hue city

Best Of Live-Boat Ride On The Perfume River-Hue, Vietnam
This broadcast originally aired as a livestream on Periscope during my visit to Hue, Vietnam. Portions have been edited and some narration has been added for clarity. Hue, Vietnam was the seat of the Nguyen emperors and was the imperial capital from 1802-1945. The Perfume River divides the North and South sections of Hue. In the north, the Citadel, a walled fortress and the remains of The Forbidden Purple City, home to the Nguyen emperors. The South contains modern Hue, much of which had to be rebuilt after the Vietnam War. As I passed by the Citadel and the remains of The Forbidden Purple City of the Ngyuen emperors I chatted about the recent intense weather. Pedal boats in the shape of swans are popular at rivers and lakes throughout East Asia and Southeast Asia. Someone asked about a man I met working at a restaurant that made me a bottle opener with a bolt and scrape piece of wood. The Truong Tien Bridge was designed by Gustav Eiffel, who was responsible for many bridges and buildings during the French Colonial Period. This is a wonderful setting at night viewing the multi-colored spotlights on the bridge from the Walking Street market. The current population of Hue is approximately 350,000. As we passed under the Trong Tien Bridge my boat ride on the Perfume River was coming to an end. This was a fantastic experience riding past the green banks of the river seeing the Citadel and other sites from my very own chartered dragon boat. Hue is a city that in a relatively short time has seen emperor rule, terrible loss and devastation from war, and an eventual acceptance of what had been seen by the Vietnamese Communist Party as the reminder of a feudel regime. Currently restoration of many of it’s historic sites is underway. A truly remarkable experience and perspective from Hue’s legendary atmospheric waterway-The Perfume River.

Top 5 Things to do in Hue, Vietnam
Hue is a small town in Vietnam full of rich culture and history. We spent 5 days exploring former royal palaces in the imperial citadel as well as tombs of some of the great Vietnamese Nguyen emperors.
For our first stop we take you to to the very famous Imperial City of Hue. Hue was the former capital of Vietnam two times throughout history and so Hue houses one of the most impressive ancient cities in Vietnam.
Address: Thành phố Huế, Thua Thien Hue, Vietnam
Hours: Monday - Sunday 8am–5:30pm
Next up we head to a local Vietnamese market nearby. The largest of its kind in Hue being Dong Ba Market. It's 16000 square meters (not km as mentioned in the video sorry!) Worth a visit if you're looking for some cheap goods or a wide variety of Vietnamese cuisine and street food.
Address: 2 Trần Hưng Đạo, Phú Hoà, Thành phố Huế, Thừa Thiên
Hours: Monday - Sunday 6am–6pm
One thing you don't want to miss while you're in Hue is the Perfume River. Its waterways run throughout the entire city and many of the most popular tourist destinations lie along Perfume River's banks. We decided to travel via boat.
We went through tour operators
On the boat ride down Perfume River we stopped off at our next destination - Thien Mu Pagoda. You can also reach Thien Mu Pagoda by car but it is a little bit far. Going by boat to Thien Mu Pagoda is definitely the best option.
Address: Hương Hòa, Thành phố Huế, Hương Hòa Thành phố Huế Thừa Thiên Huế 532761, Vietnam
Hours: Monday - Sunday 8am–6pm
Finally you can't leave Hue without viewing the impressive tombs of the famous Vietnam emperors. We chose a mix of traditional design and architecture by visiting Minh Mạng's tomb:
Address: QL49, Hương Thọ, Hương Trà, Thừa Thiên Huế, Vietnam
And also what had to have been our favourite destination of Hue which was the Royal Tomb of Khai Dinh which architecturally was ahead of its time.
Address: Khải Định, Thủy Bằng, Hương Thủy, Thừa Thiên Huế 530000, Vietnam
Both tombs open from
Hours: Monday - Sunday 7am–5:30pm
