Periyar Tiger Reserve, Thekkady, is an example of nature’s bounty with great scenic charm, rich bio diversity and providing veritable visitor satisfaction. Sprawled over an area of 925 Sq .km., Periyar is one of the 48 tiger reserves in India. Zealously guarded and efficiently managed reserve is a repository of rare, endemic and endangered flora and fauna and forms the major watershed of two important rivers of Kerala, the Periyar and Pamba. Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary (PNP) is a protected area in the districts of Idukki, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta in Kerala, India. It is notable as an elephant reserve and a tiger reserve. The protected area covers an area of 925 km2 (357 sq mi). 305 km2 (118 sq mi) of the core zone was declared as the Periyar National Park in 1982.
The park is often called the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary or Thekkady. It is located high in the Cardamom Hills and Pandalam Hills of the southern Western Ghats along the border with Tamil Nadu. It is 4 km (2.5 mi) from Kumily, approximately 100 km (62 mi) east of Kottayam, 110 km (68 mi) west of Madurai and 120 km (75 mi) southeast of Kochi.
Apart from Elephants, the other animals can be found in the Periyar Sanctuary are, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Gaur, Mouse Deer, Dole or Barking Deer, Indian Wild Dog and Tiger. There are, now estimated counts of 40 tigers in the Periyar National Park. The major four species of primates are also found at Periyar - the rare lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, Gee's Golden Langur, Common Langur and Bonnet Macaque. Periyar is also being considered as the habitat of the elusive Nilgiri Tahr, which can rarely be seen but commends its presence.

Boating in Periyar lake at Thekkady
Boating in Pariyar lake at Thekkady is one of the major attractions among the tourist who visited Kerala. It's an enjoyable activity looking around the wildlife in the periyar sanctuary around the lake. Boating in the lake is chargeable and tickets can be purchased online. Animals that can be seen are deers, Bisons, birds etc.

Thekkady is known to be an adventure lovers hub. Hence the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and the Periyar Tiger Reserve are some of the most important tourist places in Thekkady. in this video I spend a day at Thekkady - in my resort, Greenwoods Resort Thekkady, exploring Periyar Lake and Boating in Thekkady and also a Spice Garden in Kerala - which is a must do on the way from Munnar to Thekkady. It took us about 3 hours to reach from Munnar to Thekkady and our first stop was Annakara Spices and Ayurveda Garden. This was a very informative spice garden tour that you must do when in thekkady.

We also visited the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Here you can visit the wildlife sanctuary, do an elephant ride and lots more. But we decided to explore this much reviewed Periyar Lake boating in Thekkady. It is run by KTDC and you can even book tickets online. Check out details here.

Our family trip to Thekkady was to celebrate my daughter's birthday. We had reserved two cottages in the Elephant Court, Thekkady. We had a relaxed holiday there, but we did not miss out to enjoy a few amazing things that we can do in Thekkady.
During your visit to Thekkady, what you must not miss is the Boating in Thekkady Lake. Our Thekkady boating helped us to spot animals including elephants, sambar deers, monitor lizards, wolfs, and so on. Not just the boating, we can also enjoy jeep safari, nature walk, and bamboo rafting in Thekkady.
As the resort had a beautiful swimming pool, we had some wonderful time in the pool and then in the activity zone. On our way back, we stopped at Parunthumpara to enjoy some of the breathtaking views of Kerala's mountain ranges.

Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary (PNP) is a protected area near Thekkady in the district of Idukki, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta in Kerala, India. It is notable as an elephant reserve and a tiger reserve. The protected area covers an area of 925 km2 (357 sq mi). 305 km2 (118 sq mi) of the core zone was declared as the Periyar National Park in 1982. The first official action towards the conservation of wildlife and biodiversity in Kerala was taken in 1934 by the Maharaja of Travancore, Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, by declaring the forests around Periyar lake as a private game reserve to stop the encroachment of tea plantations.[2][3] It was founded as Nellikkampatty Game Reserve. It was consolidated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1950 after the political integration of India.
Periyar National Park lies in the middle of a mountainous area of the Cardamom Hills. In the north and the east it is bounded by mountain ridges of over 1,700 m (5,600 ft) altitude and toward the west it expands into a 1,200 m (3,900 ft) high plateau. From this level the altitude drops steeply to the deepest point of the reserve, the 100 metre valley of the Pamba River. The highest peak in the park is the 2,019 m (6,624 ft) high Kottamala, the southernmost peak in India higher than 2,000 metres (6,562 ft). The Periyar and Pamba Rivers originate in the forests of the reserve.[4] The other prominent peaks within the park are Pachayarmala, Vellimala, Sunderamala, Chokkampetti mala and Karimala.[5] The topography consists of steep and rolling hills which are thickly wooded. The sanctuary surrounds Periyar Lake, a reservoir measuring 26 km2 (10 sq mi) which was formed when the Mullaperiyar Dam was erected in 1895. The reservoir and the Periyar River meander around the contours of the wooded hills, providing a permanent source of water for the local wildlife.
The temperature varies depending upon the altitude and it ranges between 15 °Celsius in December and January and 31 °Celsius in April and May. Annual precipitation is between 2000 and 3000 mm, about two-thirds occurring during the southwest monsoon between June to September. Much of the rest occurs during the northeast monsoon between October and December. Summers are warm with some precipitation in April and winters are cold.

East: Theni, Thirunelveli & Ramnad District of Tamil Nadu
West: Kottayam district
The park is made up of tropical evergreen and moist deciduous forests, grasslands, stands of eucalyptus, and lake and river ecosystems.[6] There are many hundreds of flowering plant taxa, including about 171 species of grass and 140 species of orchids.[6] The grasses are found in the open grasslands found on the edges of the water body where fire resistant vegetation grows and dense grasses like elephant grass are found. This is the common dining hall of various herbivores.
There are 35 species of mammals recorded in the park, including many threatened species. It is an important tiger and elephant reserve. A total of 35 Bengal tigers were counted across 925 square kilometers of the park in 2017.[7] It is valuable for Indian elephant and also for a few of white tigers found here. Other mammals include the gaur, sambar, wild pig, Indian giant squirrel, Travancore flying squirrel, jungle cat, sloth bear, Nilgiri tahr, lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, Salim Ali's fruit bat, stripe-necked mongoose, and Nilgiri marten.

2011 – The management of Periyar Tiger Reserve has been assessed as very good by the National Tiger Conservation Authority and the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests.[17]
2012 - An additional 148 km2 of evergreen forest at Ponnambalamedu added to the reserve.

The Indian black turtle (Melanochelys trijuga) is a medium-sized, mainly still-water species from northern, northeastern, and peninsular India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Nepal, Bangladesh, Thailand, and possibly Pakistan. Six subspecies are currently recognized. The turtle has been introduced to some of the islands of the western Indian Ocean by seafarers. Omnivorous in dietary habits, the species takes aquatic plants in addition to invertebrates and carrion.

Wonderful Periyaar Lake, Thekkady, Kerala
The Boat Safari In Periyaar Lake is Wonderful, The tourist centre at Thekkady offers two-hour boating trips, arranged by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation, at the artificial lake near the sanctuary. A herd of elephants or a wandering family of deer are common sights near the lake. In the hot months of March and April, visitors stand a better chance of viewing wildlife as the animals come to the lake frequently for drinking water. You may be able to spot herds of Gaur, Sambar and wild boars in the grasslands adjacent to the shores. A variety of avian fauna such as darters, egrets and kingfishers can be seen resting on dead tree trunks that stick out over the lake. During your boat ride, there is also a high probability of observing the antics of the Smooth Indian Otter.
There are 2 options to book the seat on boat - either via Periyar Foundation official Website or via the Ticket Counter at the Boating place.The Boat Timings are -

I took a road trip around South India with 17 riders on Royal Enfield. The trip goes across 7 cities - Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Madurai, Munnar, Thekkady, Kumarakom and Kochi.
This is Part 5 from the 7 part web series on the trip.In this part, we took a boat ride through periyar tiger reserve and did a elephant ride later in the evening in Komli
It was a intense experience riding through the beautiful terrains of South India. The trip was organised The Bear Inn and there were 17 riders in the trip.

After crossing the Mundakayam bridge the roads starts climbing hills.Thekkady is famous for Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary is open from 6.00 AM to evening 6.00 PM. Out of total 777 sq.km area 360 sq.km is thick evergreen forest. Periyar Wildlife sanctuary declared as Tiger Reserve in 1978.Animals by the side of the lake Entry fee to SanctuaryEntry fee for Indian tourist is Rs 15 and another Rs 10 per head for Eco Development Surcharge. Entry fee is Rs 300 for foreign tourists.Located on the banks of the Periyar Lake, Periyar House is a budget jungle lodge, which offers a vantage point for visitors to get close to the wildlife in Thekkady. It is inside the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. For a budget traveller who wish to stay in a wildlife sanctuary this is the best option here.

Periyar Lake Boat Trip - Thekkady / Kumily, Kerala
We made a nice boat trip on Periyar Lake in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary near Thekkady in Idukki District, Kerala, India.
The backwaters of the Mullaperiyar Dam, build in the 19th century, form this lake, which is surrounded by nice forest areas.
It's always worth to book the boat - at least it is a nice trip on the water, in a wild scenery, and usual one can see some animals.
This time, we did not see (as so often) elefants, but lot of Sambar, wild boar, birds, monkeys, gaur, a small tortoise, and of course: boats full of animal lovers ... ;-)

Wir haben eine nette kleine Tour mit dem Boot auf dem Periyar Lake im Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary nahe Thekkady gemacht. Es ist immer ganz lustig, so einen Trip zu machen - die Fahrt ist cool, der vom alten Mullaperiyar Damm aufgestaute See mit seiner bewachsenen Uferlandschaft und vielen abgestorbenen Bäumen, die aus dem Wasser ragen, recht sehenswert, und oft sieht man auch Tiere.
Natürlich hat die Sache auch einen gewissen Abenteuerwert: es gab hier auf dem See schon einmal einen Bootsunfall mit vielen Toten, und der Damm, nun ja, schließlich ist er ja schon deutlich über hundert Jahre alt - die Produzenten des Ende 2011 erschienenen Films dam999 gaben ihr Bestes, um auf möglicherweise drohende Katastrophen hinzuweisen ... mit dem Ergebnis, dass der Film in Kinos in Tamil Nadu und Kerala nicht gezeigt werden darf ... ;-)
Na egal, eine Bootsfahrt lohnt sich auf jeden Fall (und wir können ja auch alle schwimmen). Eigentlich sollte man am besten morgens kommen, wenn noch Nebel über dem See liegt - aber der Nachmittag hat auch seine Reize. Dieses Mal haben wir zwar keine Elefanten gesehen (wie schon so oft), dafür aber immerhin Sambar, Gaur, Wildschweine, diverse Vögel, eine kleine Schildkröte, und Affen - abgesehen von vielen Tierliebhabern, die meisten immer am Fotografieren. Manche hatten auch ein Fernglas dabei - auch wenn offensichtlich nicht jeder auf Anhieb mit so etwas umgehen zu können scheint ... ;-)))
