Munnar to Thekkady - Periyar Spice and Ayurvedic Garden
- Tamil Nadu Jeep Safari || Kerala Part - 4
The route from Munnar to Thekkady is very picturesque. There are many view points on the route. I also saw a waterfall. I visited Periyar Spices and Ayurvedic Gardens, a must visit in Thekkady. There are many jeep safari options in Thekkady, one of them inside Tanil Nadu. Grape cultivation and water canal are the attractions of Tamil Nadu side jeep safari. There are many elephants in the Thekkadi elephant camp. I would be very happy if the elephant was allowed to roam freely in the camp. You can also enjoy Kathakali, Martial Arts and Tribal Dance at the same place. Please see my privious video of Munnar for Kathakali and Martial Arts performance. In this video you will see tribal dance of Kerala. I stayed at Jungle Palace Home Stay at Munnar and saw few wild elephant from my room balcony. I paid 1850 rupees for one night.

Enter Kumily and the intoxicating aroma of cloves, nutmeg, pepper, cinnamon or cardamom takes over. Thekkady hosts some of the finest spice plantations in the country. Its equable climate and unique geographical positions has helped it become the de facto exporter of spices in the State. These spices are used by millions to add flavour to food along with helping preserve it. Other spices like turmeric and ginger are known to be used for medicinal purposes and religious rituals. Cardamom is the primary spice grown here and Kumily is a major provider in Kerala's domination in the trade of this spice. Pepper, tea and coffee are other major exports that are in high demand. Walks through these plantations gives one an up close look at how these are grown, harvested and eventually shipped out for consumption. The scent is invigorating and these walks are held at regular intervals throughout the year.

Thekkady | Elephant Ride | Periyar Tiger Reserve
Thekkady | Elephant Ride | Periyar Tiger Reserve
Driving through the pristine wilderness, we were heading towards Thekkady, which is around 91 km from Munnar.
On our way to Kumily, we stopped at Periyar spice & ayurvedic garden. The entry to this garden is 100 rs per person and they showed us a variety of Ayurveda and medicinal plants.
We also went for an Elephant ride, which was fun and a wonderful experience. The name of this elephant is Shridevi very obedient and with calm nature.
We then took a jeep safari to the Pandikuzhi viewpoint. Where the plains and the paddy fields discrete from the mountains.
Soon we were about to reach Kumily and we decided to have a lunch first.
After finishing our lunch we check in to our hotel in Thekkady. The name of this hotel is Ambadi hotel, a heritage hotel situated in Ambadi Junction, Thekkady. This hotel is built in the likes of a traditional Kerala village with sustainable, eco-friendly architecture and organic interiors where woods are mostly used is designed by a Padma-Shree awardee.
Later that evening we went to the Navarasa Kathakali centre & Kadathanandan Kalari Centre. And the cost is 200 per seat per show.
After the show, we went to our hotel and tried some amazing foods.
The next early morning we visited the Periyar tiger reserve. We catch the first bus and the ticket cost us 60 per person and the boating cost is 240 per person.
If you are a photographer and love to shoot wildlife. Then this sanctuary is a must visit place.
If you are lucky you can spot Tiger. But there’s a high chance to spot wild animals like bison, wild boar, deer and many birds.
After the boat ride, we came back to our hotel and we had breakfast first.
The ambience of the restaurant was nice and the creativity in every detail of the wooden work is amazing.
So its time for us to leave Thekkady. And on our way for the last time, we had a glance at the vast tea plantations.
And we stopped at a place called Pattumala near Peermade, where we enjoyed a walk in the tea garden.
This place also features a zip line amidst of tea plantation.
After all the fun we proceeded towards Kottayam.
And on our way, we visited the last waterfall of our journey called Valanjamkanam waterfall.
Soon after reaching Kottayam we went to a restaurant where we had a meal consisting of a variety of traditional vegetarian dishes served on a banana leaf.
Then we took the train to Trivandrum.
