Thekkady Boating During Our Family Trip to Periyar Tiger Reserve in Thekkady, Kerala
Would you select Thekkady or Munner during your vacation in Kerala? I would suggest you to keep two days for Munnar as well as Thekkady while you plan your trip to Kerala.
Please do subscribe to Jaunt Monkey:
Our family trip to Thekkady was to celebrate my daughter's birthday. We had reserved two cottages in the Elephant Court, Thekkady. We had a relaxed holiday there, but we did not miss out to enjoy a few amazing things that we can do in Thekkady.
During your visit to Thekkady, what you must not miss is the Boating in Thekkady Lake. Our Thekkady boating helped us to spot animals including elephants, sambar deers, monitor lizards, wolfs, and so on. Not just the boating, we can also enjoy jeep safari, nature walk, and bamboo rafting in Thekkady.
As the resort had a beautiful swimming pool, we had some wonderful time in the pool and then in the activity zone. On our way back, we stopped at Parunthumpara to enjoy some of the breathtaking views of Kerala's mountain ranges.

Periyar Tiger Reserve - Thekkady Boating HD - A Perfect Holiday Family destination in Kerala
Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary (PNP) is a protected area near Thekkady in the district of Idukki, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta in Kerala, India. It is notable as an elephant reserve and a tiger reserve. The protected area covers an area of 925 km2 (357 sq mi). 305 km2 (118 sq mi) of the core zone was declared as the Periyar National Park in 1982. The park is a repository of rare, endemic and endangered flora and fauna and forms the major watershed of two important rivers of Kerala, the Periyar and the Pamba.
The park is often called the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary or Thekkady. It is located high in the Cardamom Hills and Pandalam Hills of the south Western Ghats along the border with Tamil Nadu. It is 4 km (2.5 mi) from Kumily, approximately 100 km (62 mi) east of Kottayam, 110 km (68 mi) west of Madurai and 120 km (75 mi) southeast of Kochi.
The first official action towards the conservation of wildlife and biodiversity in Kerala was taken in 1934 by the Maharaja of Travancore, Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, by declaring the forests around Periyar lake as a private game reserve to stop the encroachment of tea plantations.[2][3] It was founded as Nellikkampatty Game Reserve. It was consolidated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1950 after the political integration of India.
Periyar National Park lies in the middle of a mountainous area of the Cardamom Hills. In the north and the east it is bounded by mountain ridges of over 1,700 m (5,600 ft) altitude and toward the west it expands into a 1,200 m (3,900 ft) high plateau. From this level the altitude drops steeply to the deepest point of the reserve, the 100 metre valley of the Pamba River. The highest peak in the park is the 2,019 m (6,624 ft) high Kottamala, the southernmost peak in India higher than 2,000 metres (6,562 ft). The Periyar and Pamba Rivers originate in the forests of the reserve.[4] The other prominent peaks within the park are Pachayarmala, Vellimala, Sunderamala, Chokkampetti mala and Karimala.[5] The topography consists of steep and rolling hills which are thickly wooded. The sanctuary surrounds Periyar Lake, a reservoir measuring 26 km2 (10 sq mi) which was formed when the Mullaperiyar Dam was erected in 1895. The reservoir and the Periyar River meander around the contours of the wooded hills, providing a permanent source of water for the local wildlife.
The temperature varies depending upon the altitude and it ranges between 15 °Celsius in December and January and 31 °Celsius in April and May. Annual precipitation is between 2000 and 3000 mm, about two-thirds occurring during the southwest monsoon between June to September. Much of the rest occurs during the northeast monsoon between October and December. Summers are warm with some precipitation in April and winters are cold.
North: Peerumedu taluk
South: Pathanamthitta district
East: Theni, Thirunelveli & Ramnad District of Tamil Nadu
West: Kottayam district
The park is made up of tropical evergreen and moist deciduous forests, grasslands, stands of eucalyptus, and lake and river ecosystems.[6] There are many hundreds of flowering plant taxa, including about 171 species of grass and 140 species of orchids.[6] The grasses are found in the open grasslands found on the edges of the water body where fire resistant vegetation grows and dense grasses like elephant grass are found. This is the common dining hall of various herbivores.
There are 35 species of mammals recorded in the park, including many threatened species. It is an important tiger and elephant reserve. A total of 35 Bengal tigers were counted across 925 square kilometers of the park in 2017.[7] It is valuable for Indian elephant and also for a few of white tigers found here. Other mammals include the gaur, sambar, wild pig, Indian giant squirrel, Travancore flying squirrel, jungle cat, sloth bear, Nilgiri tahr, lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, Salim Ali's fruit bat, stripe-necked mongoose, and Nilgiri marten.

Periyar Tiger Reserve is one among the most famous Protected Area not only in India but in the world and is located in the High Ranges. With an extent of 925 sq. km, the Periyar Tiger Reserve forms the largest and oldest wildlife sanctuaries of Kerala. It is situated in Idukki and Pathanamthitta and Kottayam districts. The park has exclusive tourist zone for nature education and interpretation for visitor. Nearly seven lakhs tourists visit the park annually.
People oriented and park centred community based ecotourism is the hallmark of Periyar Tiger Reserve. These programmes are conducted by local people responsible for the surveillance of the vulnerable parts of the reserve. By taking tourists along, they will also be involved in the conservation of the forests of Periyar and some valuable revenue is generated for community welfare. People who once made a living by illegal operations in the forests have since become forest protectors and earn their livelihood through these programmes. Hence, as a visitor, when people join us in any of these programmes, they are directly contributing towards forest conservation and community welfare.
Community-based and protection-oriented ecotourism programmes (CBET) were initiated in PTR during the IEDP. These programmes were developed to ensure livelihood security and to reduce negative dependency on forests. Three basic tenets of Conservation, Community and Tourism co-exist in these programmes and are found to be sustainable.
The objectives of CBET programmes are to:
ü Enhance Reserve Protection
ü Help local people to earn subsistence & supplementary livelihood
ü Enhance visitor satisfaction
ü Disseminate conservation values

PERIYAR TIGER RESERVE - Wild Periyar
Thekkady | Elephant Ride | Periyar Tiger Reserve
Thekkady | Elephant Ride | Periyar Tiger Reserve
Driving through the pristine wilderness, we were heading towards Thekkady, which is around 91 km from Munnar.
On our way to Kumily, we stopped at Periyar spice & ayurvedic garden. The entry to this garden is 100 rs per person and they showed us a variety of Ayurveda and medicinal plants.
We also went for an Elephant ride, which was fun and a wonderful experience. The name of this elephant is Shridevi very obedient and with calm nature.
We then took a jeep safari to the Pandikuzhi viewpoint. Where the plains and the paddy fields discrete from the mountains.
Soon we were about to reach Kumily and we decided to have a lunch first.
After finishing our lunch we check in to our hotel in Thekkady. The name of this hotel is Ambadi hotel, a heritage hotel situated in Ambadi Junction, Thekkady. This hotel is built in the likes of a traditional Kerala village with sustainable, eco-friendly architecture and organic interiors where woods are mostly used is designed by a Padma-Shree awardee.
Later that evening we went to the Navarasa Kathakali centre & Kadathanandan Kalari Centre. And the cost is 200 per seat per show.
After the show, we went to our hotel and tried some amazing foods.
The next early morning we visited the Periyar tiger reserve. We catch the first bus and the ticket cost us 60 per person and the boating cost is 240 per person.
If you are a photographer and love to shoot wildlife. Then this sanctuary is a must visit place.
If you are lucky you can spot Tiger. But there’s a high chance to spot wild animals like bison, wild boar, deer and many birds.
After the boat ride, we came back to our hotel and we had breakfast first.
The ambience of the restaurant was nice and the creativity in every detail of the wooden work is amazing.
So its time for us to leave Thekkady. And on our way for the last time, we had a glance at the vast tea plantations.
And we stopped at a place called Pattumala near Peermade, where we enjoyed a walk in the tea garden.
This place also features a zip line amidst of tea plantation.
After all the fun we proceeded towards Kottayam.
And on our way, we visited the last waterfall of our journey called Valanjamkanam waterfall.
Soon after reaching Kottayam we went to a restaurant where we had a meal consisting of a variety of traditional vegetarian dishes served on a banana leaf.
Then we took the train to Trivandrum.
