Perlan - A Sparkling Pearl of Wonders, Stars, And The Best View In Reykjavík
Ever since the mid-20th century, six hot water tanks stood on top of Öskjuhlíð. In 1991, an immense glass dome was placed on top of them, forming Perlan, which in the years since has become one of the most iconic and visited attractions in Iceland. The name translates to ‘pearl’, and seeing the building from the distance will show you why. On a sunny day in the city, it sparkles out like a prize-winning diamond, enchanting locals and foreigners alike...

On top of Öskjuhlíð hill lies Perlan. This is a building where large tanks with natural hot water is stored for heating the city, but from the top dome you also get amazing views of Reykjavik and it's surroundings. In the dome there's a restaurant and café if you prefer to stay inside enjoying the views.

Now officially on the Tauck Tour Land of Fire & Ice Cruise, some touring took place before embarkation on L'Austral with lunch at the Pearl or Perlan.
This domed landmark building was built on top of the Reykjavik's hot water storage tanks and its restaurant slowly revolves while diner's enjoy views of the city. Truth must be told and their food is expensive and not fantastic. Our lunch was included but I suggest just visit and spend the approximately $77 US per person somewhere else.

We visited the Perlan, Wonders of Iceland exhibition, planetarium and ice cave here in Reykjavik, Iceland and of course I vlogged it.
Perlan is the cities water tower which has been recently developed into a very cool exhibition space where you can learn all about Iceland from its landmass and volcanic landscape to its glaciers, Vikings and Northern Lights.
The planetarium is the newest addition and its a fabulous cinematic experience where you lay back in a theatre and listen to Aurora tell you all about her dance. Watch the illustrated story, listen to the beautiful music and enjoy the footage of the Northern Lights. A great way to see them if visiting in the summer.
Next up is the artificial ice cave which is a very cool (haha) experience. Wander around the cave and ice tunnels, and sit in the ice throne. The ice formation is so beautiful and it’s a fun experience if you don’t have a glacier on your itinerary.
The exhibition gives you a great overview of Iceland, it’s formation and history. There are maps, videos, installations, and loads of models and interactive screens.
Make sure to pop up to the 5th floor for a view across Reykjavik and enjoy a cup of coffee in the cafe. There’s free parking, it’s a short drive up to Perlan and there’s free parking on site.
The exhibition, planetarium and ice cave at Perlan, Wonders of Iceland was amazing and we highly recommend visiting if you’re in or coming to Reykjavik.

Perlan is a Must-Visit Landmark and Nature Exploratorium located in Reykjavik Iceland. Recently renovated to include interactive exhibits of volcanoes, glaciers, wildlife, an ice tunnel, and an observation deck with an amazing view over the city! Oh, and a planetarium with a year-round northern lights show so you can always see the aurora in Iceland!

We at Iceland Aurora Films have been busy filming the northern lights this winter, in rather unusual locations. This short film is all shot in the center of Reykjavík, Iceland and was extremely technically complicated to make due to the light pollution. We got really lucky with strong Aurora displays this winter, and some Aurora shapes we´ve never seen before. We spent a total of 30 nights outside filming. Some of the locations have never been filmed from at night, like the final scenes at Hallgrímskirkja cathedral, but we were lucky enough to be up there during the massive solar eruption on the 17th of march 2015!
