Putin gives Soviet Union gulag a glossy museum-style makeover
Perm-36, northeast of the city of Perm in the Urals, was one of some 50 gulag prison camps operating in the 1940s and 50s.In those camps, built to house the 'ideological enemies of socialism', more than one million people died from 1934 to 1953.After last Sunday's election Vladimir Putin secured another six years in power. And not content with eliminating political opposition, the Russian President has also begun a systematic campaign to rewrite history.Joseph Stalin, according to this new script, was an 'effective manager' who made the Soviet Union great. And without forced labour there would have been no Kremlin nuclear or space programme. To reinforce this myth Putin has set about transforming former gulags into museums.Between 1929 and the year of Stalin's death in 1953, 18 million men and women were transported to Soviet slave labour camps in Siberia and other outposts of the Red empire.Prisoners worked in the most extreme climates, facing temperatures of -20C (-4F), as they cut down trees with hand saws and dug at frozen ground with primitive pickaxes.Others mined coal or copper by hand, often suffering painful or fatal lung diseases from inhaling ore dust while on the job.Labourers in the prisons worked up to 14 hours a day on massive projects, including the Moscow-Volga Canal, the White Sea-Baltic Canal, and the Kolyma Highway.Perm-36 is one of the first to be revamped, and remodelled, after local government seized control of the the site three years ago.Resurrecting Stalin 'is a way of justifying the personal power of Putin' and Russia's lack of civil liberties and human rights, said 41-year-old opposition leader Alexei Navalny to The Times.'Putin does not want certain parallels to be made between himself and Stalin, of course, but the people around him give some hints saying, for instance, that Stalin was a strong leader and that Putin is a strong leader.' This differs from the narrative Navalny was taught at school: that Stalin was a mass executioner of Russians. Now, however, Navalny himself is routinely denounced in Stalinist terms as a 'foreign agent' and 'enemy of the people'.Perm-36 has been remodeled as a monument to the crimes committed inside the former slave camp. The first exhibit to greet visitors is a photograph of men sitting on a log fishing. In another scene a cheerful inmate is seen felling trees, as if at some kind of summer camp.According the the captions these men were 'toiling for the motherland'.On one wall is a poster of the dictator, pulling on a pipe at his desk.It is captioned 'Stalin in the Kremlin taking care of each of us'.Prisoners, the museum says, enjoyed film nights and 'shows' in a 'house of culture' fitted with green velvet chairs. They were allowed reading material, including foreign authors, visitors are told.In a newly fitted library, Charles Dickens sits next to Lenin. But the resurgence of Stalin as a popular figure extends beyond the restoration of gulags.Just three weeks ago thousands of Stalinists visi
Russia’s Gulag Museum Faces Uncertain Future
Perm-36 is a memorial museum to Soviet repressions on the site of the world's only preserved gulag camp. Local historians who founded the museum have been replaced at the helm by a state organization. The ousted historians now fear the change of management means Soviet crimes will be whitewashed.
Communist gulag survivors teach unusual history lesson

Whether it's the story of Anastasia, many have heard about the tragic history of the Russian Royal Family, but few know how or where it actually happened. Yekaterinburg is a city in the middle of Russia and rarely visited by the average tourist. Russia opens major Gulag museum

LEAD IN:
A brother and sister from Lithuania are breaking down barriers, attempting to do something no one else has done before...claim compensation from the Russian government.
They are fighting for the memory of their mother, who suffered in Soviet labour camps when Stalin was in power.
A court will meet to consider their claim later this month.
STORYLINE:
The Lithuanian national archives in Vilnius holds records of all citizens arrested by the KGB during the Soviet era.
Some 40,000 Lithuanians were deported during the first Soviet occupation from 1939 to 1941 and another 200,000 were deported in the post-war period until Stalin's death in 1953.
Some 75,000 citizens from the Baltic states were sent to the Gulag during the period of Soviet rule.
According to Povilas Girdenis, a KGB researcher, many Lithuanians were tried and sent to the Gulag for being traitors to the motherland.
Ona Puskunigiene was one of these people.
Her arrest and imprisonment is now the subject of a civil court action.
Her daughter and one of her sons are taking the Russian government to court.
They want 500,000 Euros compensation for the treatment their mother suffered during her five yeas incarcerated in Stalin's labour camps.
In 1951 she was arrested on charges of anti-Soviet activity and was sentenced to 25 years hard labour.
Ona's three children were very young when she was arrested. Her son Benediktas remembers that the family lost everything when she was taken.
But it wasn't only material possessions that were lost when their mother was sentenced to prison.
The children where damaged emotionally, knowing their mother was suffering.
She returned to her family and died in Lithuania in 1976.

Always READY TO RESPOND! Russia prepares its 'GIRL CADETS' to serve MOTHER LAND
Always READY TO RESPOND!
Russia prepares its 'GIRL CADETS' to serve MOTHER LAND & family.
Moscow, Russia
-Video from RIA Novosti
(Видео с Российское агентство международных новостей)
Stripping a Kalashnikov assault rifle is not something one would expect to see at an ordinary school lesson.
But Moscow's Female Cadet Boarding School No. 9 is not an ordinary school and is the only one of its kind in Russia.
These girls can definitely defend themselves, Deputy Headmaster Aleksey Zhukov says.
After they finish our school most of them want to pursue a career in law enforcement, and so far everybody has managed to take up command posts.
Since it opened in 2004 the school aims to bring back the cadet education that was abandoned in Soviet times.
But it's not just a military education; they also learn languages, about the law and history of art, alongside life skills like sewing and cooking.
Medical education is an important part of the school's program.
The girls spend at least four hours a month learning all types of first aid, including how to stop bleeding, applying bandages, and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
The school's museum is dedicated to some of the most influential women in Russian history.
From Empress Anna of Russia, who established the cadet movement in the 18th century to the first woman in space.
Everything in the school is aimed at developing a well rounded character.
The image of our graduate is a practical, advanced, intellectual woman who is ready to serve her country and be a loving mother, loyal wife, friend and a skillful hostess, says Headmaster Viktoriya Silenskaya.
Student Maria Korchagina's parents work in the civil service and she wants to continue the tradition.
At the age of sixteen she's already a senior sergeant -- albeit just in the school.
Life here is very saturated, Korchagina says. If ordinary students just have lessons, we get to travel, perform in shows and take part in parades. We never sit down to relax!
The school currently educates 161 students, all of them girls.
Most of them are allowed to go home only for the weekend and on school nights everyone has to be in bed by 10 pm.
The rules are strict -- especially for seniors -- but the girls say they still have a relatively normal social life, as the boys' cadet school is just around the corner.
Students of the unique Moscow's Female Cadet Boarding School No. 9 are no ordinary girls.
Lessons in this school take girl power to a whole new level.
Girl students say they are now prepared to serve their future families and country.

Currently a PhD candidate in Art History at the University of Rennes 2, France, he is writing his thesis on Moscow conceptualism. His curatorial projects include French Contemporary Painting: Intersections in History (PERMM Museum of Contemporary Art, Perm), Colocation / Living Together (La Box Gallery, Bourges, France), Generation P (Le Kremlin-Bicêtre, France), and 40 Lives of One Space (Special Project, 3rd Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, Red October, Moscow). He was one of the winners of the young curators competition held by Garage in 2014.
Garage Museum of Contemporary Art presents Open Systems. Self-Organized Art Initiatives in Russia: 2000–2015.
Since 2000, the Russian art scene has witnessed the rise of artists’ DIY initiatives, including independent non-profit spaces, exhibitions in deserted factories and underground crosswalks, street festivals, internet projects, and apartment shows. Together these reflect the autonomy of emerging generations of artists from both state-run and private institutions. Open Systems is a live, research-based exhibition that presents self-organized initiatives, exploring the phenomenon through the perspectives of artists who have pioneered projects over the past 15 years.

*** I USE AFFILIATE LINKS ***
Affiliate links do not cost you as the consumer any more than you would normally pay, but it does offer a kickback to the person who initiated the sale. This allows me to financially continue to be able to make content for you and I only endorse products I genuinely love. Any sponsored content will be stated as so.
