Recife is the 4th-largest Metropolitan area in Brazil with 3,768,902 inhabitants, the largest metropolitan area of the North/Northeast Regions, the 4th-largest metropolitan influence area in Brazil, and the capital of the state of Pernambuco. The population of the city proper was 1,561,659 in 2009. Recife is located where the Beberibe River meets the Capibaribe River to flow into the Atlantic Ocean. It is a major port on the Atlantic Ocean. The name Recife means reef in Portuguese, in allusion to the coral reefs that are present by the city's shores. The many rivers, small islands and over 50 bridges found in Recife city center characterize its geography and gives it the moniker of the Brazilian Venice.
The Metropolitan Region of Recife is the main industrial zone of the State of Pernambuco; most relevant products are those derived from cane (sugar and ethanol), electronics, food, and others; thanks to the fiscal incentives of government, many industrial enterprises were started in the 1970s and 1980s. Recife has a tradition of being the most important commercial center of the North/Northeastern region of Brazil with more than 52,500 business enterprises in Recife itself plus 32,500 in the Metro Area which will total more than 85,000.
A combination of a large supply of labor and significant private investments turned Recife into Brazil's second largest medical center, (second only to São Paulo); modern hospitals with state-of-the-art equipment receive patients from several neighboring States. Like all other cities in the Northeast, Recife is developing its tourist sector. The beach of Porto de Galinhas, 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of the city, has been repeatedly awarded the title of best beach in Brazil and has drawn many tourists. Recife's infrastructure is among the most developed in Brazil for travellers and business people, though there is wide room for improvement.
The city is also a renowned educational center, and home to the Federal University of Pernambuco, the largest university in Pernambuco. Several Brazilian historical figures, such as the poet and abolitionist Castro Alves, moved to Recife to attain their education.
Recife is served by the Gilberto Freyre/Guararapes International Airport which connects Recife to several Brazilian destinations as well as major international cities in Europe, the United States and South America. Recife stands out as a major tourist attraction of the Northeast, both for its beaches and for its historic sites, dating back to both the Portuguese and the Dutch colonization of the region. The beach of Porto de Galinhas, 60 kilometers (37 mi) south of the city, has been repeatedly awarded the title of best beach in Brazil and has drawn many tourists. The Historic Centre of Olinda, 7 kilometers (4.3 mi) north of the city, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982, and both cities' Brazilian Carnival are among the world's most famous.
Recife is on the Atlantic coast, at the mouth of the Capibaribe, Beberibe and Jordão Rivers, close to the eastern most point of the Americas. The climate is tropical, with two main seasons: dry (September-March) and rainy (April-August). Average annual temperature is 78.8°F, with limited variation. Many tourists stay along the beach in Boa Viagem, 10 km (7 mi) south of the center. The area of Boa Vista just across the Ponte Velha from the train station has a number of budget and mid-range hotels.
Celebrations, holidays and other events are numerous throughout the year. The New Year begins at the beach, Praia de Boa Viagem and in Old Recife. The carnival of Recife and Olinda (which has its historic town centre considered a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1982) begins many weeks ahead in December with innumerable balls and parades.
In the city, the carnival festivities begin in December, as locals begin preparing for the official Carnival, which starts the week before Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday in the Christian liturgical calendar. The pre-Carnival parties usually consist of percussion groups practising in local clubs, city streets and squares, and even Carnival balls. There is a variety of rhythms from different cultures. Carnival officially starts with the Galo da Madrugada, a party in Downtown Recife that attracts many people from several states of Brazil, and other parts of the world.
The Mercado de São José (Market of Saint Joseph) is an old, iron construction with a popular market nearby. In the Fort Cinco Pontes (Fort of Five Points) is the state museum, Museu do Estado de Pernambuco. At the rectangular Pátio de São Pedro are the Cathedral São Pedro (Cathedral of Saint Peter) dating from the year 1782 and restored colonial houses, with numerous restaurants, bistros and bars. In the Bairro Santo Antônio (Saint Anthony neighborhood), at the meeting place of the rivers Capibaribe and Beberibe, is the Praça da República (Square of the Republic) with the Teatro Santa Isabel (Theatre of Saint Isabel), with its neoclassical front, the Law Courts, and the Palácio da Justiça (Palace of Justice). The Casa da Cultura (House of Culture) is an old prison that has been converted into a cultural space and shopping centre. Built between 1835 and 1855, the Malakoff Tower, a monument constructed in Tunisian / Arabic style, used to be an observatory and now is a cultural centre and a place for popular gatherings. It is located at Arsenal da Marinha Square.
Recife has a zoo known as the Dois Irmãos Park, consisting of 387 hectares of Atlantic Forest reserve and 14 hectares of botanical gardens. It contains 800 animals, the Natural Science Museum and various ecological trails. The metropolitan area has also a giant water park 20 km (12 mi) North of Recife, called Veneza water park which has nearly one million square feet of area, ten million litres of water and lots of water slides for the youngsters.

Olinda is one of the most well preserved colonial towns in Brazil. It was once the capital of the federal state of Pernambuco on the Atlantic coast and in 1982 was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The first Portuguese immigrants were excited about its wonderful location when they landed here in 1535. They were followed by priests and monks who built churches and monasteries within the palm groves on the hills. Most of the town’s important buildings date back to that time when the town prospered due to the cultivation of sugar cane. Religion in the town began to blossom, a fact indicated by the remarkable Benedictine monastery, the Mosteiro De Sáo Bento, Olinda is a fine example of colonial splendour and sacred art. A unique masterpiece of Brazilian Late Baroque!

Osvaldo Andrade was born in 1962 in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil and graduated in Architecture in 1989 at the Federal University of Pernambuco.
He worked in architecture from 1985 to 1990 as an associate of the architect Roberto Hollanda, and in 1990 he became an independent architect in Recife. His works include the building project Maria José de Andrade (1989 to 1994). From 2010 to 2011, Andrade worked for BDM Building Industry in Angola and Mozambique. His projects at BDM includes the National Bank of Angola (BNA) in N’dalatando, Angola (2010); the CSD Commercial Tower in Luanda, Angola (2010); and the housing estate Tete (Conjunto Habitacional Tete) in Maputo, Mozambique.
From 1986 to 2001 he has taught architecture design at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of Pernambuco (FAUPE) and from 2012 to 2014 at ESUDA Faculty of Human Sciences.
In 1994 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the City of Recife (Medalha de Ouro Cidade do Recife) for his project proposal for the Mangroves Park (Proposta de Utilização do Parque dos Manguezais”) at the World Forum of Young Architects - BIAB 94.
His furniture ZIG_ZAG gained the first prize in the National Design Competition created by the Design Center in Recife 2003.
In 2009 Andrade’s residential project, Casa Chã Grande, was awarded the second prize in the contest Core Architects, of Pernambuco and in 2016 his residential project Casa Prisma was awarded the first prize in the same contest. Andrade’s residential project, Casa Thina, was granted the America Awards 2015-16 for the best residential project of America in Barbados from the International Property Awards, United Kingdom.
Curator of the exhibition: Beauty without Limits takes on many forms in Chicago, United States of America, June 2015; and in Milan, Italy, December 2015, being a reflexive reinterpretation of national and international artists on Osvaldo Andrade's award-winning works.
Currently Andrade is giving lectures and providing exhibitions on modern design focusing on furnishing at the “Furniture Restorer Workshop” offered by the State Museum of Pernambuco (Museu do Estado de Pernambuco).

Museu do Estado do Pará - Palácio Lauro Sodré (Documentário)
O Museu do Estado do Pará foi criado em 18 de março de 1981 e no ano de 1994 foi transferido para o Palácio “Lauro Sodré”, ano em que foi transferida da edificação a sede administrativa. O Palácio, que possuí traços do estilo neoclássico, no século XVIII, foi projetado pelo arquiteto bolonhês Antonio Landi, para servir de sede e moradia dos governadores e capitães generais do Pará.
Atualmente, o Museu dispõe de um diversificado acervo, composto de pinturas, mobiliário, acessórios, fotografias, entre outros bens, que incluem o próprio edifício, como testemunhos de diferentes contextos, permitindo diversificadas leituras. Os objetos que compõem as coleções do Museu do Estado do Pará configuram-se como testemunho de significativos momentos históricos e de processos sociais que fazem parte da história do Estado. A cultura material exposta e em reserva técnica remonta os idos do século XVIII, trazendo contextos econômicos, políticos, artísticos, entre outros, presentificados através da mesma. Objetos expostos são documentos, pois informam sobre determinados acontecimentos e fatos; são testemunhos, na medida em que sobreviveram a quem os produziu e chegam até a contemporaneidade na condição de expressão do passado, de períodos que remetem à colônia, império e república.
The Museum of Pará state was created on March 18, 1981 and in 1994 was transferred to the Palace Lauro Sodré, the year the building was transferred to headquarters. The Palace, which possess features of neoclassical style in the eighteenth century, was designed by the Bolognese architect Antonio Landi, to host and house captains governors and generals of Pará.
Currently, the museum has a diverse collection composed of paintings, furniture, accessories, photographs, and other assets, including the building itself, as testimonies of different contexts, allowing diverse readings. The objects that make up the collections of the State Museum of Pará appear as witness to significant historical moments and social processes that are part of the history of the State. The exposed and technical reserve material culture dating from the eighteenth century gone, bringing economic, political and artistic contexts, among others, made present through it. Exhibits are documents, because informed about certain events and facts; are testimony to the extent that survived and those who produce them reach the contemporary condition of expression in the past, periods refer to the colony, empire and republic.

O Recife é a capital do estado brasileiro de Pernambuco. Teve como origem o porto formado pela barreira de de recifes que acompanha o seu litoral. No início da colonização do Brasil, ainda no século XVI, a vizinha Olinda figurava como o principal núcleo urbano da Capitania de Pernambuco. No entanto, essa facilidade natural de abrigar embarcações, foi aos poucos atraindo a população e o comércio para o local em que Recife viria a crescer. Recife mantém um importante património histórico, representado por antigas construções, principalmente dos séculos XVII a XIX, como os casarões, muitos dos quais no antigo bairro de Recife.
Olinda (PE - Brasil)
Olinda é um município brasileiro do estado de Pernambuco, na Região Metropolitana do Recife. Tem uma população de cerca de 387 mil habitantes (2006), sendo uma das mais bem preservadas cidades coloniais do Brasil. Foi a segunda cidade brasileira a ser declarada Patrimônio Histórico e Cultural da Humanidade, pela UNESCO, em 1982.
No estado de Pernambuco, é uma das mais antigas cidades brasileiras, tendo sido fundada (ainda como um povoado) em 1535 por Duarte Coelho. Foi elevada a vila em 12 de março de 1537. Olinda era sede da capitania de Pernambuco, mas foi incendiada pelos holandeses devido à sua localização. Segundo a concepção holandesa de fortificação, Olinda detinha um perfil de difícil defesa. Diante disso, transferiram a sede para o Recife. Em 1654, quando os portugueses retomaram o poder e expulsaram os holandeses, volta a ser capital de Pernambuco. Em 1676 foi elevada à categoria de cidade. Em 1837, perde de vez o título de capital para o Recife.

Recife is the fifth largest Metropolitan area in Brazil and the capital of Pernambuco. The population was 1,515,052 in 2005, and 3,646,204 in the wider metropolitan Region. Recife is located where the Beberibe River meets the Capibaribe River to flow into the Atlantic Ocean. It is a major port on the Atlantic Ocean. The name means reef in Portuguese. Surrounded by rivers and crossed by bridges, Recife is full of islands and mangroves that magnify its geography. It is known as the Brazilian Venice, thanks to its fluvial resemblance with the European city, and is considered one of Brazil's cultural capitals.
Olinda (PE - Brazil)
Olinda is a historic city in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, located on the country's northeastern Atlantic Ocean coast, just north of Recife and south of Paulista. It has a population of 376,800 people (2005) and is one of the best-preserved colonial cities in Brazil. The city's name can be interpreted as an exclamation regarding the beauty of its setting (Ó, linda! is Portuguese for Oh, beautiful!), but a much more likely source is a literary character in the chivalry romance Amadis de Gaula. Olinda features a number of major tourist attractions, such as a historic downtown area (World Heritage Site), churches, and the Carnival of Olinda, a popular street party, very similar to traditional Portuguese carnivals, with the addition of African influenced dances. Unlike in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, in Olinda, admission to Carnival is free. All the festivities are celebrated on the streets, and there are no bleachers or roping. There are hundreds of small musical groups (sometimes featuring a single performer) in many genres.
