Cash boost to help preserve exhibits at Perth Museum and Art Gallery
Hundreds of unique objects are to be conserved to make sure they are ready to be displayed in the new Perth City Hall. Culture Perth and Kinross, the creative organisation behind the region’s museums, galleries and libraries, has been given £59,000 from Museums Galleries Scotland to conserve over 450 items destined for display in the new visual arts museum at Perth City Hall. The local organisation is one of nine to be awarded a share of £300,000 from Museums Galleries Scotland. This money will be used to conserve items from the region’s nationally significant collections of unique archaeological, social history and world culture. These items tell the story of Perthshire and its people at home and abroad, from the earliest times to the present day. Gillian Findlay, interim head of museums and collections at Culture Perth and Kinross, said this funding will help the team bring in experts to make sure objects of national and international importance are displayed in the new visual arts museum. She said: “This award is extremely good news and a great way to start 2020. “The funding enables the team at Culture Perth and Kinross to progress vital conservation work on many of the key exhibits destined for display in the new city hall museum. “We can now commission specialists with experience in conserving archaeological, social history and world cultures materials, to work closely with us on Perth and Kinross’s fabulous museum collections which are not just of local significance, but of national and international importance. “We are very grateful to Museums Galleries Scotland for their ongoing support and look forward to sharing the results of this major investment with local residents and visitors to the city when the museum opens its doors a few years from now.” Lucy Casot, CEO of Museums Galleries Scotland, added: “We are delighted to support museums and galleries in Scotland to continue their ambitious approach to making the fascinating collections in their care accessible to everyone. “The nine funded projects are looking to the future to create museums that are relevant and responsive to their communities and visitors. “Many of the museums are using the grant to strengthen their position in these changing times through developing their financial sustainability, increasing use of digital technology in exhibitions, and creating peer to peer learning opportunities.” Cash boost to help preserve exhibits at Perth Museum and Art Gallery

City Snapshot: Perth in Summer
Perth really shines in the summer! This vibrant city offers plenty of things to see and do, with fantastic attractions including Perth Museum and Art Gallery and the Black Watch Museum. The bustling high street with its range of stores begs to be explored, while the pretty banks of the River Tay are perfect for a gentle stroll. Pair a dash of culture with some delicious ice cream and enjoy a cone whilst following the River Tay Public Art Trail.
Out with the city, summer is alive in the countryside, with the chance to see breeding ospreys in quiet nature reserves, or cast your line and try fishing in a nearby river. Want to take the pace up a notch? Then turn up the fun, see world class music acts and experience the unique atmosphere of T in the Park, Scotland’s biggest music festival.
Perth city centre has got plenty going on too, with a busy programme of performances at the Perth Concert Hall, as well as other quirky events taking place, such as the Southern Fried Music Festival. One thing is for sure, you won’t be short of things to do on a city break in Perth!
