7 Things To Do in Peru (That Aren't Machu Picchu)
7. Sandboarding and racing dune buggies in Huacachina
This hidden oasis provides ample opportunity for adrenaline-junkies and thrill seekers to explore. Just four hours south of Lima, travellers can begin their day by boarding down sand dunes or racing across the desert in dune buggies for a truly exhilarating experience.
6. Explore the Peruvian Amazon
Considered to be less popular than its Brazilian counterpart, the Peruvian Amazon is home to a diverse wildlife population and winding rivers that you need to visit while in Peru. To access the diverse jungle terrain, you can take a flight from the city of Puerto Maldonado with flights leaving daily from Cusco and Lima. And the good news? Tours through the Amazon on the Peru side are significantly cheaper – meaning you can save your dollars for a bonus round of pisco sours.
5. Go deep into Colca Canyon
When in Peru, make time to visit one of the deepest and most spectacular canyons in the world, the Colca Canyon. Accessible from Peru’s second largest city, Arequipa, the Colca Canyon is Peru’s third most-visited attraction yet many hikers seem to skip this impressive site. Don’t make the same mistake as those hikers and add a trip to the Colca Canyon to your itinerary. Also, if you’re still yet to be impressed, the Colca Canyon is actually twice as deep as the United States’ Grand Canyon. See for yourself how it compares.
4. Embrace the serenity of Lake Sandoval
Lake Sandoval is part of the Madre de Dios region of Peru, which is part of the Amazon basin. To reach this majestic site, you can start your hike near Mare de Dios River and marvel at the impressive wildlife including parrots, macaws and other exciting creatures. Once you arrive, you will be greeted by an unforgettable sunset.
3. Taste the mineral-rich salts of Maras
Just outside of Cusco you will find the town of Maras which is held in high esteem across the world for its impressive collection of salt mines that date back to the Inca times. Here, you will find thousands of salt pools that make up the hillside that build an intricate network of channels that feed spring water into the ponds. For a small fee, you can taste the warm water and sample some of the finest salt in the world. The mineral rich salt is great for cooking and is believed to help reduce stress.
2. Walk the streets of Arequipa
You’ve heard all about Cusco and Lima, but what do you really know about Arequipa? This city is filled with charming baroque architecture built from white volcanic stone. Surrounded by breathtaking volcanoes, Arequipa has well and truly earned its place as a UNESCO World Heritage destination.
1. Do as the Peruvians do in Huilloc
There’s a reason why we saved the best until the very end. To wrap up your time in Peru, there’s no better way to experience Peru than by immersing yourself in local culture. Make time for a visit to the Quechua village of Hilloc and learn more about the fine art weaving from the female villagers who have been perfecting the craft since a young age. Then, sit down for a pachamanca lunch where stones and grass are used to cook cuy (guinea pig), fava beans and potatoes using traditional cooking methods. The hospitality and generosity of the Quehchea villagers will leave you feeling humbled and grateful for the experience.

Known for its incredible wall art work and home to some of Peru's famous artist, musicians, and more. We wasted no time and dived right in to some local hot spots.
Below are the list of places we went to in the video. Also in the video we give them our rating.
Café Negro -
Known for their organic Peruvian coffee and tasty fresh breakfast sandwiches. We share with you a local makes the PERFECT cup of coffee.
El Cacaotal -
It's like a chocolate museum of all Peruvian Chocolates. ????
We steeped inside this incredible story and scene to learn how Peru in only 5 years of getting into the chocolate making scene has quickly become known as having some of the best chocolates in the world.
Juanito Bodega Bar
This has to be one our favorite new places in to eat in Barranco. It's a pretty popular restaurant and has been around since the 1930's. The walls are full of theatre actors and actress and we must say, the Pisco Sours there are amazing.
Being able to take you back into the kitchen to see how they prepare one of Peru's most famous dishes, Lomo Saltado was icing on the cake. Wait til you see this.
Crem dela Crem
This gelato shop was simple but impressive. They let you sample as many flavors as you like until you find the perfect match for you.
Great little seating area outside to enjoy your ice cream.

Lima, Peru. Downtown Lima (2018) │ My travel Journal
Today we will be visiting Downtown Lima, it was an amazing day.
The Government Palace, every day at noon there is the changing of the soldiers that take care of the government palace, it is really interesting and very nice to see. The entrance is free, you just have to be in the main square in front of the Palace by noon.
The San Francisco Church, beautiful and with the popular CATACOMBS, the entrance to see them costs S/. 15 soles, it is a Museum where you can see beautiful old paintings and you are going to go inside the church and its halls.
Then the Catacombs, saddly you cannot take pictures and that is why I did not put images in the video but it is really recommended.
Before you go inside the museum, go to the church, inside you will see a little hole, getting close to the front where you can see some preview of the CATACOMBS.
The cathedral, beautiful Cathedral of Lima, the entrance is S/.10 soles and it really worth it, is nice to see the cemetery inside, the Chapels, amazing chapels, a lot of art.
To eat, we go to EL CHINITO, a sandwich place where you can eat TYPICAL peruvian sandwiches. If you come to Perú don't forget to try the CHICHA MORADA.
Here is the address of EL CHINITO:
Between HUALLAGA Y CARABAYA street - LIMA
(MAIN SQUARE - IN FRONT OF THE CATHEDRAL)
Welcome to LIMA, PERU.
Hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to Subscribe.

Travel Peru: Part 1 Miraflores Lima
Shortly after completing our trek to The Lost City in Northern Colombia, we jumped on a plane first to Medellin, and then on to Lima. We arrived very late at night and caught a taxi to our hotel in Miraflores.
The next day we began exploring the area, Miraflores is quite a surprise, very modern and clean, and it was hard to find a reason to leave as most of what there is to see and do is based around Miraflores. Sure there is more out there, but we were happy to explore and eat locally. Maybe next time we will venture outwards.
But boy did we eat, some of the most amazing food I have had in South America, and undoubtabley the best fish ceviche I have ever had. I wouldn't have thought it, but the sweet potato, raw onion and corn goes incredibely well with the raw fish. And then there was the sushi, oh and the incredible fresh sandwiches, and the unique Chicha corn drink which really grows on you, oh and the sweet potato deep fried donuts. The food, was awesome.
But we didn't just eat, we also wandered around the area exploring a bit, and then went for our first ever surf lesson, it was cool to try something so different to flying, but then it was even more cool to go and fly in such a unique location, we both got to have a flight sandwiched between ocean and city, really beautiful.
After a bit more food and a bit more exploring, it was off to the bus station and on yet another bus, this one bound for Paracas, the so called poor mans Galapagos Islands.

Lima, Peru
Recorded March 6, 2009.
Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru. It is located in the valleys of the Chillón, Rímac and Lurín rivers, on a coast overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It forms a contiguous urban area with the seaport of Callao. Lima is the 5th largest city in Latin America, behind Mexico City, São Paulo, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. Lima ranks as the 17th most populous city in the world with a population exceeding 8 million.
The video begins at the airport and then we drive to the historical center of Lima which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988 due to its importance during the colonial era leaving a testimony to architectural achievement. On the way we were able to view many of the wooden balconies for which Lima is famous. We continue our tour on foot at the monastery and church of saint Francis. We then walk to the main square and visit the Cathedral of Lima. Located around the Plaza de Armas is the gigantic Cathedral of Lima, the government building of the peruvian president and several other official buildings. Very special is the fact, that all the buildings are painted in yellow....to have a contrast to the often grey sky.

Living in Lima (Peru) #1: Plaza San Martin
Celebrating 6 years of The Travellers (diogok) channel, we are starting a new vlog series, this time in PERU!
We stayed for 2 months living is this amazing country, studying Spanish and travelling from North to South.
First, we lived for a few weeks in the capital, Lima, and on this video series I will show our Spanish school in Miraflores, the community we lived in Surco, the historic city centre and many other tourist attractions. Prepare to see archaeology sites, museums, churches, parks and even the crazy car traffic! And obviviously, we could not forget, the Pisco Sour!
On this first video in Lima, we start a walk tour from Plaza San Martin, a nice square right in the city centre, going to Plaza Mayor, where it is located the Government Palace (Palacio del Gobierno) and the Cathedral (La Catedral)

While most tourists to Lima stay in the beautiful haven of Miraflores, the history and vibrant culture of every day life in the Peruvian capital happens a few neighborhoods away in El Centro. This downtown area (which includes one of the world's largest Chinatowns) is where Limeños work, shop, eat, and surround themselves with historic and modern buildings.
The local Urban Adventures tour led by Paula is a great introduction to this exciting and lively neighborhood. Along the way, we learn about the many diverse immigrant groups that contribute to Peru's great culinary scene, we uncover hidden catacombs in an old monastery, and we finish with a sip of the national cocktail.
MEDLIFE Destination: Lima, Peru
With a population of 9 million, Lima is the fourth-largest city in the Americas, and one of the most important financial centers in Latin America. As a tourist destination, it is famous for its diverse gastronomy, historic cultural sites, and nightlife.
Lima is also home to extreme poverty, especially in the densely populated settlements on its outskirts. These areas, known as “pueblos jovenes,” have grown rapidly in recent years, as people migrated from the rural sierra of Peru to Lima in search of economic opportunity and an escape from the instability and violence of the 1980s. People also continue to migrate to Lima from rural areas of Peru in search of better access to basic services -- such as health care, education, and work opportunities -- that are often limited or completely absent in their home communities.
