LEADIN:
The striking MAS museum opens today ( Friday) in the Belgian city of Antwerp.
It's hoped this bold design will do for the city what the Guggenheim Museum has done for the Spanish city of Bilbao.
STORYLINE:
This striking building dominates the skyline of the port city of Antwerp in Belgium.
Opening on May 13, 2011 - this is the MAS museum.
Built on the docks of the once-derelict Eilandje neighbourhood, the museum hosts the splendours of what sailing ships brought in from around the globe for centuries.
This 65 metre (213ft) audacious, sandstone-and-glass tower proves Antwerp has lost none of its cocky swagger of old.
We are in a beautiful shrine,'' says MAS museum director Carl Depauw. It has turned into an absolute icon for the city. It is the place that will be visited by citizens of Antwerp and become a must see place for all people who will visit Antwerp.
From a distance the tower appears to be constructed from layers of rusty red boxes, floating on airy voids of glass.
And looking at the tower of seemingly three different layers of rusty-red boxes floating on airy voids in between, it is tough to disagree.
The New York Times recently called Neutelings building iconic but the architect is more bashful.

Visit Antwerp - Amberes - Brabo fountain
In the middle of the 'Grote Markt' stands the Brabo fountain. The statue was made by sculptor Jef Lambeaux in 1887. According to a legend, a terrible giant, called Druoon Antigoon, lived on the banks of the river Scheldt in ancient times. Whenever sailors on the Scheldt river refused to pay toll to the giant, he punished them by cutting off their hand. A Roman soldier, Silvius Brabo, managed to kill the giant. Brabo cut off the hand of the giant and threw the hand away in the river.
Hence, according to the legend, the name of the city : hand ( Engl.: hand) -werpen (Engl.: to throw). A nice legend, but untrue. Nevertheless, the 'hand' is the symbol of Antwerp. There are hands in the town flag. Also there are several sweets in the form of a hand (cookies, chocolates).

Antwerp is situated on the Schelde (Scheldt) River, about 55 miles (88 km) from the North Sea. The Schelde, together with the Meuse and the Rhine, forms the biggest estuary in western Europe, and Antwerp is an essential part of an enormous harbour complex, one of the greatest in the world. The harbour installations of Antwerp grew especially after World War II. For many years this expansion took place on the right bank of the Schelde only, but beginning in the 1970s there was much development on the left bank as well.
Because Antwerp lies in the Dutch- (Flemish-) speaking part of Belgium, the city plays the role of unofficial capital of Flanders. Antwerpians generally take this role very seriously, conscious as they are of the great importance of their city in the past and present.

Peter Paul Rubens (28 June 1577 -- 30 May 1640), was a Flemish Baroque painter, and a proponent of an extravagant Baroque style that emphasised movement, colour, and sensuality. He is well known for his Counter-Reformation altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects.
In addition to running a large studio in Antwerp that produced paintings popular with nobility and art collectors throughout Europe, Rubens was a classically educated humanist scholar and diplomat who was knighted by both Philip IV, King of Spain, and Charles I, King of England.
Rubens was a prolific artist. His commissioned works were mostly religious subjects, history paintings, which included mythological subjects, and hunt scenes. He painted portraits, especially of friends, and self-portraits, and in later life painted several landscapes. Rubens designed tapestries and prints, as well as his own house. He also oversaw the ephemeral decorations of the Joyous Entry into Antwerp by the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand in 1635.
Paintings can be divided into three categories in his workshop --- those he painted by himself, those he painted in part (mainly hands and faces), and those he only supervised. He had, as was usual at the time, a large workshop with many apprentices and students, some of whom, such as Anthony Van Dyck, became famous in their own right. He also often sub-contracted elements such as animals or still-life in large compositions to specialists such as Frans Snyders, or other artists such as Jacob Jordaens.
The Value of Peter Paul Rubens Paintings
At a Sotheby's auction on 10 July 2002, Rubens's newly discovered painting Massacre of the Innocents sold for £49.5 million ($76.2 million) to Lord Thomson. It is a current record for an Old Master painting. The 1976--1977 academic year at the College of Europe was named in his honour.

Peter Paul Rubens Quotes
I paint a woman's big rounded buttocks so that I want to reach out and stroke the dimpled flesh.
Every child has the spirit of creation. The rubbish of life often exterminates the spirit through plague and a souls own wretchedness.
Painting a young maiden is similar to cavorting with great abandon. It is the finest refreshment.
My passion comes from the heavens, not from earthly musings.
I'm just a simple man standing alone with my old brushes, asking God for inspiration.
Each morning I shoo the beggars and cripples from my door stoop. If God wanted these vermin to eat surely he would provide them with substance.

In Antwerp, Rubens received a humanist education, studying Latin and classical literature. By fourteen he began his artistic apprenticeship with Tobias Verhaeght. Subsequently, he studied under two of the city's leading painters of the time, the late Mannerist artists Adam van Noort and Otto van Veen.[3] Much of his earliest training involved copying earlier artists' works, such as woodcuts by Hans Holbein the Younger and Marcantonio Raimondi's engravings after Raphael. Rubens completed his education in 1598, at which time he entered the Guild of St. Luke as an independent master.[4]
Italy (1600–1608)[edit]
The Fall of Phaeton, 1604 in National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. - 98.4 × 131.2 cm (38.7 × 51.7 in)
In 1600, Rubens travelled to Italy. He stopped first in Venice, where he saw paintings by Titian, Veronese, and Tintoretto, before settling in Mantua at the court of Duke Vincenzo I Gonzaga. The coloring and compositions of Veronese and Tintoretto had an immediate effect on Rubens's painting, and his later, mature style was profoundly influenced by Titian.[5] With financial support from the Duke, Rubens travelled to Rome by way of Florence in 1601. There, he studied classical Greek and Roman art and copied works of the Italian masters. The Hellenistic sculpture Laocoön and his Sons was especially influential on him, as was the art of Michelangelo, Raphael, and Leonardo da Vinci.[6] He was also influenced by the recent, highly naturalistic paintings by Caravaggio.
He later made a copy of that artist's Entombment of Christ, recommended that his patron, the Duke of Mantua, purchase The Death of the Virgin (Louvre),[7] and was instrumental in the acquisition of The Madonna of the Rosary (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna) for the Dominican church in Antwerp. During this first stay in Rome, Rubens completed his first altarpiece commission, St. Helena with the True Cross for the Roman church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme.
