Peterhead Scottish Gaelic: Ceann Phàdraig,Scots: Peterheid is a town in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is Aberdeenshire's biggest settlement (the city of Aberdeen itself not being a part of the district), with a population of 18,537 at the 2011 Census.
Peterhead sits at the easternmost point in mainland Scotland. It is often referred to as The Blue Toun (locally spelt as The Bloo Toon) and people who were born there as Blue Touners (locally spelt as Bloo Tooners). More correctly they are called blue mogginers (locally spelt as Bloomogganners), supposedly from the blue worsted moggins or stockings that the fishermen originally wore.
History
Peterhead was founded by fishermen and was developed as a planned settlement. In 1593 the construction of Peterhead's first harbour, Port Henry, encouraged the growth of Peterhead as a fishing port and established a base for trade.
Peterhead was a Jacobite supporting town in the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745. In particular, it was one of the Episcopalian north-eastern ports where reinforcements, plus money and equipment, were periodically landed from France during the Forty-Five.
Peterhead is the largest settlement in Buchan, a committee area of Aberdeenshire.
The town was a burgh in the historic county of Aberdeenshire. In 1930 it became a small burgh under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1929, but in 1975 small burghs were abolished and Peterhead became part of the district of Banff and Buchan within the new Grampian Region. When districts and regions were abolished in 1996, Peterhead became part of the new unitary authority of Aberdeenshire.
Since 1975 Peterhead has had a community council, with limited powers.
Education
Primary and specialist schools
Peterhead has six primary schools (Clerkhill, Buchanhaven, Meethill, Dales Park, Central, Burnhaven).
There is one special school, Anna Ritchie, which caters for most specific learning difficulties, autism and other disabilities.
There is also Peterhead Alpha School which caters for children with social, emotional, and behavioural difficulties, as well as learning difficulties, e.g. dyspraxia and dyslexia.
Transport
Peterhead has a number of in-town and out-of-town bus services.
Peterhead is further from a railway station (32 miles from Aberdeen) than any other town of its size in Great Britain. The town once had two stations Peterhead railway station and Peterhead Docks railway station. Passenger trains on the Formartine and Buchan Railway stopped in 1965 under the Beeching Axe, and freight in 1970. The start of reconstruction of the Borders Railway to Galashiels (early 2013) has begun a local political debate into the possibility of reopening the line from Aberdeen to Fraserburgh and Peterhead.
The nearest airport with scheduled services is Aberdeen Airport. A heliport has been set up at the Eastern end of the former RAF Buchan air base. Recreational aviation also takes place from a part of a former runway.
Maritime Economy
Peterhead has a thriving port, serving the fishing, oil and gas and other commercial industries. It also receives many visiting seafarers arriving on ships that ply these trades. Seafarers' welfare organisation Apostleship of the Sea has a port chaplain at Peterhead to provide pastoral and practical support to them.

UK PM Johnson tours fish market in Scotland
(6 Sep 2019) UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited a fish market in the coastal Aberdeenshire town of Peterhead, Scotland on Friday as he continued his unofficial election campaigning amid instability and uncertainty around Brexit.
Although in the 2016 Brexit referendum the majority of the Scottish electorate voted for the UK to remain in the EU, many people in the country's north east voted to leave, seeking a release from the EU's Common Fisheries Policy.
Speaking to local workers in the fish market Friday, Johnson said that moving forward the British government wants to make sure there's a way of having control of the waters.
The plan is to take back control of our waters. And then make sure we have lots of possible opportunities, he said.
Johnson maintains he will take Britain out of the European Union on October 31 with or without a deal.
Parliament is in the midst of passing a law that would compel the government to seek a Brexit postponement.

MintlawToEllonApril2016HDMPEG4640
Video clips from a walk over the track bed of the EX GNSR branch between Fraserburgh, Peterhead and Dyce Junction, Aberdeen on the 18th April 2016.
I worked over these two routes as a second Man back in the 60's and enjoyed seeing the old station sites once again.
This walk began at Mintlaw, on the Peterhead branch, walking outwards to Maud Junction where it met the Fraserburgh branch then continuing south to Dyce Junction via Ellon. A 17 mile walk in total. Stations sites passed on the way were Maud Jct,, Auchnagatt, Arnage then Ellon.
I had walked all the routes last September but this time I concentrated on getting video clips rather than just photographs. I had hoped to walk all the route once again but the weather in April just didn't allow for it, weatherwise, so plan to to do Mintlaw To Peterhead, Strichen to Maud and Ellon to Dyce next year. Early April is a good time to do these walks as the weather is generally warmer and the lack of growth allows you to see far more artifact detail than when in full Summer growth.
My second walk was between Strichen and Fraserburgh. I hope to have that video uploaded in the next day or two.
I hope that you enjoy the video. My apologies for the way that converting to a lower resolution for YouTube has affected the text at the bottom of the screen.
Scotland Shorts - Castle Trail
In Aberdeenshire there are more castles per acre than anywhere else in the UK, and 19 of the most famous and dramatic castles are part of Scotland’s Castle Trail.
With an impressive tally of over 300 castles, stately mansions and ruins scattered across the landscape, Aberdeenshire is unsurprisingly known as ‘Scotland’s Castle Country’. Spend two days on the trail and discover a wealth of history and fun things to do – from hearing gruesome tales to strolling through huge estates.
On the trail you can visit the spectacular clifftop ruin of Dunnottar Castle; hear the tale of Crathes Castle’s ghostly Green Lady; discover the secrets of Tolquhon Castle; or visit one of the largest tower houses in Scotland, Castle Fraser, among many others.
Coming in all shapes and sizes, each castle has a different story to tell, from crumbling ruins to royal residences in the countryside. Which one will you explore first?

Ashford Warren | The search for the railway carriages
I posted a picture on Facebook that my Mum took nearly 40 years ago of some old, run down railway carriages in a local wood called Ashford Warren. Some people posted that they tried to find them but couldn't so I decided to go to the Warren with my camera and see if I could fine what was left of them.

Pennan (Northeast Coast of Scotland) 2013
Pennan seems to have come into existence as a fishing village in the 18th century. Until the 1930s, the population of the village seems to have come under three main surnames - Watt, Gatt and West. The people of Pennan were dependent on the sea. Most families had small boats for their own personal use. Where the men would catch the fish, it was usually down to the women and children to try to sell it to clients in the country. In the last 50 years, most of the native families have moved out and most of the houses have been bought as holiday homes. Pennan became famous in the 1980s for being used as one of the main locations for the film Local Hero, and representing the fictional village of Ferness. Film enthusiasts have come from all over the world to make a phone call in the red telephone box which featured in the film. The phone box was in fact originally put there only as a prop for the film, and then removed, but as a result of public demand a genuine telephone box was installed a few metres from the original spot and has been a listed building since 1989.
Landslips, especially one in 2007, have been damaging the village. In 2009 a 25 foot crack appeared on the cliff side, sparking calls for the village to be evacuated.

Gillnetting on the Dawn T. : Fishtown Part 4
Winner of the Platinum Award at the 2002 Houston Film Festival
Produced by Mooncusser Films LLC
Written & Directed by Christopher Seufert
Narrated by Dana Eldrededge
Music by the Cape Cod Fiddlers
Gillnetters account for a large percentage of the commercial fishing fleet of New England. Though its history is centuries-old, beginning with the Native Americans, contemporary gillnetting took hold only in the 1970's with the modernization of the small- boat fleet from handlining and longlining.
Experience one day in the life of a New England gillnetter. Captain Stuart Tolley and his three-man crew steam five hours east of Chatham, Cape Cod out to the fishing grounds known as Dwyers, just west of the Atlantic's famed George's Bank.
Underwater sequences show how gillnets catch cod and haddock. You'll also learn how gillnetters decide where to fish, how the fish are hauled and processed on-board, and where the catch goes once they return to shore.
The Fishtown Educational Series documents the men and women of the New England fishing industry who continue their way of life despite an increasingly uncertain future.
