Travelling from St. Petersburg to Sitka Cruising Alaska on an Alaskan Cruise
As the marine highway winds its way north , it stops
At many small towns along the way. For towns like wrangell,
The ferry is the main link with the outside world.
Locals use it for visits to other towns along the
Route and of course tourists and adventure seekers
Use the ferry to get to jumping off points such as this.
After the wrangell narrows, the bright
And beautiful town of petersburg beams a velkomen --
which means welcome in norwegian. And the people
of this town mean it!
The clear cold water and stately fjords on this extreme
Tip of mitdof island reminded peter buschmann so much
Of his native norway that he settled here.
Other scandanavians joined him and built petersburg --
An alaskan town with a distinctly european flavor.
as in other towns of the inside passage, the people of
Petersburg make their living from the forest and the sea.
the traditional norwegian art of rosemaling
Decorates buildings as it does in norway. Even the painted
Shutters here recall that other much loved place
On waters far away.
On days like this when the clouds part and the
Snow-bright mountains appear, petersburg is a
Place that's hard to leave.
But the marine highway goes on and another beautiful
city with a different history awaits.
Sitka rests at
the foot of spruce covered mountains and overlooks
The blue waters of the sound where a chain of small
wooded islands repeats the endlessly lovely theme
of forests meeting sea.
this desirable setting has made sitka one of history's
Prizes.
Sitka began as a tlingit indian village until the russian
alexander baranoff, the commander of a fur hunting
Party, built a fort here in 1799. The tlingit indians
Rebelled and in a surprise attack destroyed the fort.
baranoff retreated to return with warships and
Decisively defeated the tlinget. This plaque marks the
Site of the battle. Baranof then built a castle on this
Hill but only the cannon remains today.
Sitka soon became a flourishing town. It was here
that the russian flag was lowered in 1867 when the united
States bought all of alaska from russia for the then
Outrageous price of $7.2 million dollars. Sitka became
The capital of the new territory until the early 1900's
when it was moved to Juneau.
Timber, fishing, and government keep sitka thriving -
And tourism is growing. St. Michaels, with it's onion
Dome is one of the finest examples of rural russian architecture.
When this 150 year old church burned down in 1966,
The townspeople saved the doors and priceless icons
And rebuilt the church exactly.
This stately building is the first of five homes the
state of alaska has built for its older citizens. The old
pioneers home honors the original settlers of alaska and the
Statue of the old pioneer was modelled after skagway bill Fonda.
The sheldon jackson museum houses an
excellent collection of antique and modern indian artifacts
And totem poles. In its own way this native art is a forceful
and graphic history of the events that shaped the region.
Nearby, sheldon jackson college operates a salmon
Hatchery which visitors can observe from viewing platforms.
beyond the hatchery, the yacht harbor lies nestled
in a beautiful natural harbor....... One of the reasons
why sitka became the first capital of Alaska.

RV'ing Alaska's Inside Passage
The adventure begins on beautiful Vancouver Island in British Columbia with a visit to Telegraph Cove, possibly the best place on Earth to view Orca (killer whales). We continue north to Ketchikan, Alaska's first city on the Inside Passage. Here we explore the spectacular Misty Fjords National Monument by kayak and float plane. We also learn about the art of totem pole carving and watch as they are created. A short side trip by ferry takes us to Prince Of Wales Island, which has more than 2,000 miles of logging roads for exploration. The island is also known for its luxury fishing lodges.
Wrangell calls itself Alaska's Hidden Jewel and is paradise for those seeking outdoor adventure! Many say that if you're looking for the real Alaska, you'll find it here. The Anan Bear Observatory is considered to be one of the best in the state and the only place where black and brown bears feed together. We take an exciting jet boat tour up the Stikine River - the last great un-dammed river on the continent - and visit Telegraph Creek as well as the Grand Canyon of the Stikine.
The ferry becomes part of the adventure as we head north through the Wrangell Narrows - the single most difficult navigational stretch on the Passage. Petersburg is Alaska's Little Norway and Southeast's busiest processing port, home to the area's largest fishing fleet. Sitka was once the Russian capital of Alaska and is one of the most beautiful spots on our route. We explore the town's history and native culture. The Alaska Raptor Center offers a close-up at eagles. A wildlife cruise to St. Lazaria Island lets us observe whales, puffins, sea lions and otters. A snorkeling tour reveals Alaska's underwater world.
Juneau is the state capital. The biggest attraction is Mendenhall Glacier, which we explore with an exciting helicopter tour and glacier trek. Some of the best humpback whale watching is within a short boat ride of town. Incredible glacier calving and towering cliffs can be seen at nearby Tracy Arm. Side trips take us to beautiful Glacier Bay and the quirky little town of Pelican.
Our adventure ends with a tour of historic Skagway and more wilderness adventures in Haines, including a river tour, an air boat ride and panning for gold.
Imagine taking a tour of Alaska and bringing your home along for the ride! Join us on our RV adventure and get helpful tips to plan your own. - views before 6/12 - 4,190 - uploaded 9/7/09

Town of Haines Alaska @ NOAH'S TRAVEL ep#24
Many tourists visit during the annual appearance of bald eagles in the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve between October and February. During this time Haines has the largest concentration of bald eagle in the world. In May, Haines hold the longest running beer festival, with over 1,500 visitors and breweries from Alaska to Yukon. Haines is the host of the Southeast Alaska State fair, with four days of festivities on the last weekend of July. Vendors, games, rides and music festival bring people from all over Alaska for this event.
Brighton, Michigan to Alaska.wmv
I accompanied my son from Brighton, Michigan to Anchorage, Alaska on his move up there from St. Petersburg, FL to follow his girlfriend in the Air Force. The trip was 4,400 miles and we went around Chicago, through Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, up through Calgery, then through British Columbia, Yukon Providence, then through Alaska to Anchorage. It took 6 days. Then I spent 6 days visiting state parks, hiking Flat Top Mountain, visiting Virgin Falls and Thunder Falls, Aleska, Ulunka Lake, and Moose Ridge on the way to Seward before returning home via airlines.

The very size of alaska encourages diversity in it's people.
Many communities remain isolated by distance and terrain.
Aireal; iliamna, upik
And it's this same isolation - the empty spaces on the
Alaskan maps, the remote landscapes unreachable by road- gold denali pan
That many visitors to alaska find irresistable.
The major highways cover only a small portion
Of the state, and of these, only a few are open
many towns are accesible only by plane,
Or in the case of some northern coastal towns,
By barge during the summer months.
The airplane plays a major role in all
aspects of modern alaskan life.
owning a small plane is not a luxury reserved for
The wealthy, but a commonplace necessity.
one of three alaskan citizens has a pilots license-
Giving the state more private pilots per capita
Than anywhere in the world.
And instead of a main street, many communities
have an airstrip down the center of town.
It would be difficult for anyone to see very much
of alaska without spending some time in a small plane.
Charter air services are readily available throughout the state.
Fly-in fishing and hunting trips are popular-
And can provide the wilderness experience of a lifetime.
For those who'd rather explore the more beaten path,
The Alaskan railroad offers an equally exciting way
to venture into the wilderness.
the train connects anchorage with fairbanks by way of
denali, or mt. Mckinley national park, and is one of
the most popular ways to see the park. The station
is just a few yards from the denali park hotel,
Which is itself built around old railroad cars.
since passenger cars are no longer allowed into the park,
The train provides a viable alternative for travel to and
from denali. From the hotel, free shuttle busses commute
in and out of the park on a regular basis .
South of anchorage, the alaskan railroad serves the
Stretch along turnagain arm to portage and the fishing
Village of seward.
trains and planes are not the only form of transportation the alaskans use.
Dogsleds, once the most comfortable and fastest way to get around in alaska
Have been replaced by the threewheelers and snowmobile.
but the dog remains an integral part of indian and eskimo
culture. Walking through any native village you
Will see racks of salmon drying in the sun .....
the traditional form of dog food for the dogsled teams.
Dog sled racing is alaskas official state sport,
with major races taking place throughout the winter
And spring seasons. The world's longest dog sled race,
The iditarod, follows the same gruelling thousand mile
Trail that once provided the only overland access across The interior to nome.
Today, those of us more accustomed
To the creature comforts , can see this great land from
the glass dome of a railroad car equipped with a full bar,
or from a luxury cruise ship or the deck of a ferry on
The marine highway.

Most SECLUDED Towns in the United States
The United States of America, with a population of around 325,7 million, is a Constitution-based federal republic with Washington DC as its Capital. The landscape changes vastly across the country, from tropical beaches to snowy peaks and everything in between. The city with the highest population is New York City and the least populated city is Vacaville in California. Today we’re going to visit some of the most secluded towns in the USA.

7 - Jarbrige, Nevada
There are only 2 dirt roads that will lead you into Jarbrige in Nevada, one is 80-miles or 128 kms long and it’s not always open. When it snows, you’re not getting through and that is sadly, most of the year. The best time to plan a visit is Spring, where there is an abundance of wildflowers. The little town has no paved roads, so you need a robust vehicle. The name comes from the Shoshone language and means “devil.” It was believed the hills around the town were haunted. The population in 2016 was a mere 116.
6 - Arthur, Nebraska
When the only church in town is made from baled straw, you’re already learning a lot about that little town. Arthur may be small, but it’s worth a trip off the beaten track. Their tiny courthouse doubles up as a museum and the city is home to 117 residents. Founded in 1913, the town and county derived their names from President Chester A. Arthur. When the little town took off, it was home to a general store, a newspaper, church, one-room high school and bank. Arthur got electricity in 1926, although the rest of the county trailed behind, only getting power in the early 1950s.
5 - Edna Bay, Kosciusko Island
This remote and tiny town is located on Kosciusko Island and boasts a shop, church, marina and a few houses. If you’re keen to get away from it all, this is the place to go. It’s advised to kit yourself out for survival in the wild because the little shop is not that well stocked. There are only 49 people living there and they’re mainly loggers and fishermen. There is a small town nearby called Cape Pole, but there are only 100 people living there, and their set-up is much the same. Before Cape Pole was around, the nearest town was Petersburg, 31-miles or 50 km away, and when conditions were icy, that town may as well have been in another country!
4 - Kalaupapa, Hawaii
This unincorporated community is on Molokai island, the least visited island in Hawaii. The only way in is by sea or mule train and the town hugs the coastline of Kalawao County. Back in the 1800s, this used to be a leper colony and is now home to 122 permanent residents. The area is preserved and known as the Kalaupapa Leprosy Settlement and National Historical Park. The town has one post office, a small church and 2,000 unmarked graves. Sadly, you can’t just pay a visit to this remote area on a whim, you need to be invited by one of the 122 residents or go through a pre-determined tour operator.
3 - Winnett, Montana
This secluded town is in Petroleum County, Montana and is home to 185 people. In 2007, this little town convened its 3rd jury…ever! It has government offices, 2 gas stations, a post office, 2 bar and grills and that’s pretty much it. The nearest medical centre is in Lewistown, and there’s not even a hotel for you to stay in if you’re keen to visit. The town was named after Walter John Winnett, who ran away from his Canadian home to seek adventure in “Indian Country.” He was an excellent shot and was captured and adopted by Sioux Indians and given the name “Eagle Eyes.” He built a ranch in the area which served as a place for dances, weddings, school, funerals and services.
2 - Whittier, Alaska
There’s a 2.6 mile or 4 km tunnel that gives you access into Whittier, Alaska, and it’s only accessible during daylight hours. Less than 200 people have made this chilly town their home, and most of them live in one building – Begich Towers. They receive 55-feet or 16-meters of snow throughout the year, so pack your snow gear! It’s been called, “the town under one roof,” and besides most of the people living in that one building, inside there you will also find their police station, grocery store, a church, clinic and a school! You can visit this secluded spot, because in Begich Towers is also a B and B, plus if you’re snowed in and can’t get home, you can always rent DVDs from the grocery store.
