The Catacombs Salzburg, Petersfriedhof, Salzburg, Austria.
The Catacombs in the grounds of St Peters in Salzburg (the grounds were used a model for a scene from the Sound of Music) are an odd affair.
These are not the catacombs of Paris which are simply mind blowing, the Catacombs Salzburg are just a weird piece of old engineering, where two small chapels have been created in caves in the cliff face behind a cemetery and joined together with stairs. Very old and a little creepy, worth seeing but not a Salzburg highlight.

Austria's oldest, continuous-use Christian cemetery (since 1627), known as Petersfriedhof (St. Peter's Cemetery) and also includes the ancient catacombs used by early Christians. Contains St. Peter's Abbey/Monestary and was featured in the film Sound Of Music. Many notables (such as Mozart's sister Nannerl) and aristocrats of Salzburg are buried here.

St. Peter's cemetery is more than just a cemetery with churches or chapels, and catacombs to visit. This famous attraction also known as Petersfriedhof is the oldest Christian graveyard in Salzburg (1627) and would be a famous attraction for that and its beauty.
But we, as well as most visitors, came to see where the Von Trapp family hid in The Sound of Music! To jog your memory, Mother Superior hid them among the gated crypts from the Nazis. However, the Musical took liberty with the facts. The Von Trapps had time to put their affairs in order and then serenely drive across the mountains into Switzerland. Ah well, even if that was a bit of fiction, St. Peter's Cemetery is worth visiting.

Hohensalzburg - The Salzburg Fortress
During my visit to Salzburg this summer I spent a day hiking around the mountain in the center of town called Mönchsberg. This includes the Fortress Hohensalzburg and Petersfriedhof, the cemetery and catacombs at St. Peter's Church. Also on the mountain is Nonnberg Monastery, which I visited, but I saved that for my video on The Sound of Music film locations.

Katakomben in Salzburg
Am Rand des Salzburger Petersfriedhofs befinden sich erhöht die Katakomben, die in den Festungsberg gehauen wurden. Sie sind höchstwahrscheinlich spätantik-frühchristlichen Ursprungs und dienten trotz ihres Namens nicht als Begräbnisstätten sondern wohl als frühchristliche Versammlungsorte. St. Peter's is the oldest cemetery in Salzburg and one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world.
St. Peter's Cemetery lies at the stone wall that merges into the bottom of the Festungberg below the Hohensalzburg Fortress.
The colourful, carefully tended graves with their ornate headstones make walking in the cemetery feel like a walk in a mini garden.

St Peter's Cemetery lies behind the Collegiate Church of St Peter. Mozarts sister was buried here in 1829, as was Joseph Haynds brother Michael, who served in the court musical establishment and died in 1806. Built on an ancient Roman site, the Romanesque church itself, was erected originally in the twelfth century, renovated in the seventeenth and revamped in rococo style in 1770. The white, eau-de-nil and gilt ornamentation of the interior is typical of the period, as are the paintings and the ornate organ casings. Mozart's C minor Mass was first performed here in 1783, with his wife singing the soprano solos. Earlier buildings and plans for renovation of the Cathedral of St Rupert were replaced in the earlier seventeenth century by Santino Solari. The interior, in baroque style, contains frescoes and paintings. It was for the cathedral that Mozart wrote much of his church music, particularly during the short period from 1779 when he served as court organist.
Music Mozart: Lacrimosa dies illa from the Requiem, K.626
Mozart left his Requiem unfinished at his death in December in 1791. It had been commissioned by Count Walsegg, acting anonymously through his steward and apparently intending to allow people to thins the work his. On his sick-bed Mozart and his friends sang through the completed parts of the work, breaking off at the start of the Lacrimosa, which remained incomplete, to be finished eventually by Mozart's pupil Franz Xaver Süssmayr. There is a particular poignancy about this final scene of the composers life and the significance of the text for him and his friends.
