Petrie Island - Orléans, Ontario, Canada - Beaches and Scenic Wetlands
Went out to Petrie Island (Orleans, Ontario, Canada) this morning and captured some spectacular footage of a cluster of islands that were formed from clay and sand from the ICE AGE. The area is classified as a significant wetland by Ontario standards and incorporates a great habitat for plants, animals and birds.

A lot of people searching for family oriented neighbourhoods with lots of space tend to gravitate towards Orleans. It is a community of over 100,000 residents where the focus has always been on the family. We often joke that you can throw a stone in any direction and you will hit either the park, the path, or one of the 38 schools currently located in Orleans. Every subdivision has been planned and continues to plan with this in mind.
Orleans is also a self-sustaining neighbourhood. Everything you need on a day to day basis is available in the community. There is great retail shopping at Place D'Orleans mall, the box store style retail along Innes Rd or local streetscape shoppin along St. Joseph Blvd. Orleans is also home to the performing arts at the Shenkman Centre giving families an opportunity to see live theatre and gallery exhibits.
The Bob McQuarrie or Ray Friel centres and the beaches at Petrie Island offer some fantastic recreational opportunities. And with accessible medical practitioners and business professionals; the community has created a wealth of resources for its residents.
Outdoor enthusiasts are surrounded with opportunities to explore around Orleans. Petrie Island, the Mer Bleu Conservation area and all the trails along the Ottawa River provide hundreds of kilometres of 4 season trails to bike, hike, cross country ski, run or just walk with the dog. Being so close to the river also appeals to boaters, kayakers, and canoeists.
For homeowners, Orleans offers something for everyone. Older neighbourhoods close to the river or ravine systems feel secluded and safe. New subdivisions with a mix of apartments, attached housing and modern singles offer the bustle and excitement of a community in creation.
Many families also choose Orleans for its proximity to downtown Ottawa. Whether on public transit or taking the main east/west highway, Orleans will always be a top pick for families in the Ottawa region.

Petrie Island is located on the Ottawa River, in the eastern part of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is accessed from Highway 174 (The Queensway) at Trim Road. If you are in downtown Ottawa, take Highway 417 east until the split. Keep left at the split onto 174, which is still a four-lane limited-access highway that leads into Orleans. The first traffic light you will encounter is at Trim Road, at which you should turn left.
Petrie Island boasts two large public beaches on the north-east corner of the island. One is the North Beach or River Beach, the other is the East Bay Beach. Public parking for 320 vehicles is provided (parking fee is $2 for 5 hours, 7:00-18:00, 7 days a week). The beaches are operated by the City of Ottawa and are supervised by lifeguards
Parking costs $2 for 5 hours
There is also a picnic area near the interpretation center. It includes more shade trees than the main beach, as well as picnic tables and a shelter. It too has a sandy beach which is supervised. The picnic area is a great place to bring small children during the week. Gas barbeques are permitted in the picnic area, but not on the main beach. Please, no charcoal hibachis, there is no place to safely dispose of the hot coals. Open fires are not permitted.
Approximately 30 picnic tables are in the picnic area, available from May to October. Several are left year round. The area operates on a first-come first-served basis.
The public beach provides a great place to swim in the Ottawa River. During the summer lifeguards are present from noon to 7 pm.
There is organized beach volleyball almost every weekend during the summer
Volleyball net rentals: $14.50 per hour or $49.50 per day. Inquire at the Lifeguard office.
There are many kilometers of nature trails on Petrie. Even when there are thousands of people at the beach, the nature trails remain surprisingly tranquil.
You can rent peddle boats and kayaks from the Petrie Island Bait and Tackle Shop, located on the main access road, just down the hill from the Queensway.
PIOC is a club of outdoors enthusiasts based at Petrie. They organize weekly paddles, hikes, skiing, and other outdoor events. Visit the PIOC web site for more information.
The Friends of Petrie Island would like to invite children ages 2-5 or 6-12 to attend the Petrie Island Junior Naturalist program. Children accompanied by an adult will spend a fun hour and a half becoming Junior Naturalists by participating in various hands-on activities; hikes, crafts, games, songs. The cost is a nominal $2.
Many people like to fish along the causeway where the river passes under the main access road. We ask that you do not fish on the public beach or on the turtle pond. You can purchase bait and lures or rent a boat at the Petrie Island Bait and Tackle Shop. During the winter, ice fishing is very popular in the bay to the east of the main beach; huts can be rented.
The Friends of Petrie Island have built a nature center in an old cottage near the picnic area. It contains samples of nature found on Petrie, nature books, and facts on Petrie.
Natural and historical information and notice boards are provided to educate the public on various aspects of the island.
Although motor boats are not permitted inside the waterways of Petrie Island, it is still a good place from which to explore the Ottawa River.
For a small fee, you can launch your trailered boat at the Petrie Island Bait and Tackle Shop, run by Yves Grandmaitre.
Approximately 30 picnic tables are in the picnic area to the west of the main beach, available from May to October. Several are left year round. The picnic tables are used on a first come basis, but group reservations are available.

Vision
Petrie Island Contemplation
A piano improvisation combined with photos of picturesque Petrie Island in the Ottawa River (in the east end of Canada's capital city, Ottawa). The island is a recreational park with areas for picnics, swimming, nature hikes, beach volleyball and other family activities. The annual spring flooding helps support a wide variety of flora and fauna, including 29 rare plant species. For more information on Petrie Island, see
In 2002 Petrie Island witnessed the return home of the Stuemer family from their round-the-world sail. Diane & Herbert with their three sons had set out five years earlier from this same spot and covered 35,000 nautical miles. In 2003 Diane tragically passed on from cancer at age 43. A plaque on Petrie Island commemorates their historic journey. For a newspaper description of Diane Stuemer and her family in the Ottawa Citizen, please see:

The piano improvisation, recorded in 1995 on a Heintzman upright grand, was originally entitled Basic Black in contemplation. Played exclusively on the black keys, it features a brief recurring melody that reappears in a number of Ottaworth's improvisations. In 2014 it was put together with a series of photos Ottaworth took in the summer of 2009 and was renamed Petrie Island Contemplation. You will probably find it quite relaxing to listen to and conducive to meditation and contemplation of Nature.
