Petrified wood contains no organic matter; each cell has been replaced with minerals making it a rock! But you've not seen a rock like this before. Every detail of the living tree is intact down to the bark, easily fooling you into thinking that the fallen tree you're looking at is recent and not millions of years old!
But how to trees become petrified? It is the result of a pyroclastic flow from a volcanic eruptions. The hot ash buries the fallen trees from the explosion. The ash is extremely hot burning up most trees, but redwood trees are especially fire resistant and can withstand the ash. The trees are buried under layers of ash and over time, as water trickles down, each cell in the tree is replaced with minerals, perfectly preserving the structure of the tree in all its glorious detail. These trees are a marvel to behold.
In some trees, you get wonderful crystallization, resulting in geode type crystals. These trees contain no organic matter so they are essentially rocks! In fact, many of the stumps exposed from erosion are now covered with moss, so one would never know just looking at them! After some intense washing, these brilliant rocks are stunningly restored. Find out more about the history of their discovery and the park that has been family run for over 100 years!
This is one field trip worth the drive! But don't worry, if you can't make it to northern California to experience the petrified forest in Calistoga, you can check out the one in Arizona at the Petrified Forest National Park.

Journey to the Petrified Forest
Taking vacations to new places for the first time is enjoyable! Documenting it along the way helps you to revisit your vacation when looking back on it years later. Sharing it helps people to be influenced in a good way to go out and travel the world while doing the same thing. Pretty much, South Dakota is a State where videos about South Dakota need to be made and shared with the world! The vacation, which is unfortunately over with now, came in six travelling steps that involve reaching the destination.
1. Leaving Natchitoches, Louisiana.
2. Driving to Alexandria, Louisiana.
3. Departing from Alexandria's AEX Airport.
4. Arriving at the DFW Airport in Dallas.
5. Departing from Dallas's DFW Airport.
6. Arriving at Rapid City's Airport.
Petrified Forest of the Black Hills is a very old place that first opened publicly back in 1929. Also called Petrified Forest Spearhead, it has a museum with petrified fossils, rocks, and wood dating back to 120-130,000,000 years ago. On the trail for the tour there are 25 labeled official places and features. It's located in between Sturgis and Rapid City so go check it out if you're in the area.
There's a ton of petrified logs everywhere on the tour trail. Before you do go on the trail you will get to watch a fifteen minute video on the formation of the Black Hills before you get to go look at all the crazy stuff in the museum! The place has very friendly people and it's open from April 5th-October 31st with the weather permitting SO CALL BEFORE YOU GO THERE. The forest is located in Piedmont, South Dakota, USA on Elk Creek Road on the main hill right above the camping grounds.
South Dakota is a very beautiful State that needs to have more tourism! More Americans need to learn their geography and need to learn the history on States like South Dakota. If you ever think about taking a trip to this State then go through with your plans. Stay tuned for more South Dakota videos that will be released onto this channel over the rest of the week. Like always, thanks for watching!

South Dakota legislators tour North Dakota energy country
Eight representatives from South Dakota recently toured North Dakota’s energy country.
This tour is a long-standing initiative of South Dakota Rural Electric Association (SDREA), in conjunction with Basin Electric, to help educate South Dakota state legislators about the energy industry, including the challenges it faces. SDREA coordinates this tour every two years.
The tour started in Sioux Falls and Rapid City, South Dakota, where legislators received an overview of the distribution and transmission organization operations from East River Electric and Rushmore Electric.
The group then traveled to Basin Electric’s Headquarters in Bismarck where the representatives listened to presentations providing an overview of Basin Electric, power supply planning and policy issues impacting Basin Electric. They then toured the marketing/trading floor.
Following this, they traveled to the Beulah-Hazen, North Dakota, area to tour the Great Plains Synfuels Plant, Antelope Valley Station, and the Freedom Mine.

Where WOOD turns to STONE – “NATURE BOOM TIME!” Ep. 1
This episode of “Nature Boom Time!” was filmed at Petrified Forest National Park in eastern Arizona. We explore the world’s largest petrified wood deposit, and give a brief history about the geological processes that created this natural spectacle. Other topics we discuss are the process of fossilization and the incredible amount of theft that occurs at the park.

Petrified wood
Petrified wood is the name given to a special type of fossilized remains of terrestrial vegetation. It is the result of a tree or tree-like plants having completely transitioned to stone by the process of permineralization. All the organic materials have been replaced with minerals, while retaining the original structure of the stem tissue. Unlike other types of fossils which are typically impressions or compressions, petrified wood is a three-dimensional representation of the original organic material. The petrifaction process occurs underground, when wood becomes buried under sediment or volcanic ash and is initially preserved due to a lack of oxygen which inhibits aerobic decomposition. Mineral-laden water flowing through the covering material deposits minerals in the plant's cells; as the plant's lignin and cellulose decay, a stone mold forms in its place. The organic matter needs to become petrified before it decomposes completely. A forest where such material has petrified becomes known as a petrified forest.
