Luxembourg City, Luxembourg - Pétrusse Valley, Old Quarters and Fortifications (2018)
The Pétrusse (Luxembourgish: Péitruss, German: Petruss) is a river flowing through Luxembourg, joining the Alzette at Luxembourg City. It flows through the town of Hollerich.
Luxembourg (Luxembourgish: Lëtzebuerg, French: Luxembourg, German: Luxemburg), also known as Luxembourg City (Luxembourgish: Stad Lëtzebuerg or d'Stad, French: Ville de Luxembourg, German: Stadt Luxemburg, Luxemburg-Stadt)[pron 2], is the capital city of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (also named Luxembourg), and the country's most populous commune. Standing at the confluence of the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers in southern Luxembourg, the city lies at the heart of Western Europe, situated 213 km (132 mi) by road from Brussels, 372 km (231 mi) from Paris, and 209 km (130 mi) from Cologne. The city contains Luxembourg Castle, established by the Franks in the Early Middle Ages, around which a settlement developed.
As of January 2018, Luxembourg City had a population of 116,323, which is more than three times the population of the country's second most populous commune (Esch-sur-Alzette).
In 2011, Luxembourg was ranked as having the second highest per capita GDP in the world at $80,119 (PPP), with the city having developed into a banking and administrative centre. In the 2011 Mercer worldwide survey of 221 cities, Luxembourg was placed first for personal safety while it was ranked 19th for quality of living.
Luxembourg is one of the de facto capitals of the European Union (alongside Brussels and Strasbourg), as it is the seat of several institutions, agencies and bodies of the European Union, including the European Court of Justice, the European Court of Auditors, the Secretariat of the European Parliament, the European Investment Bank, the European Investment Fund, and the European Stability Mechanism.
Luxembourg City, Luxembourg - Gëlle Fra Memorial (2018)
Among historic monuments in Luxembourg, the Golden Lady on Constitution Square was set up in 1923 to commemorate the Luxembourgers who perished in the First World War. The memorial represents a gold-plated female figure on a stone obelisk.
On October, 20th, 1940 the Nazis pulled the monument down; only in 1984 did extensive restoration give it back its original appearance.
Today it symbolizes freedom and resistance for the Luxembourg people.

The City Center and Lower Town - Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
Luxembourg City is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the historical heart of the country. The city is home to the Bock, a fortified promontory that was the site of Lucilinburhuc, or Luxembourg Castle, originally built in 963AD, and around which the city eventually grew up. The castle ruins, fortresses, casemates and old town are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The city is also home to the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial, the final resting place of more than 5,000 American WWII-era soldiers including General George S. Patton.
Luxembourg City is located at the southern end of the large sandstone Luxembourg plateau, into which the Alzette and Petrusse Rivers have carved some canyons. The canyons are reminiscent of those in the American Southwest except for their urbanization and relative lushness.
Much of the city center is built on the plateau. Its Lower Town Grund and Pfaffenthal quarters are located on the canyon floor on the banks of the Alzetter River, and are the oldest part of the city. This split of the city center between upper and lower areas contributes to several picturesque views of the city.

Luxembourg is a small European country, surrounded by Belgium, France and Germany. It’s mostly rural, with dense Ardennes forest and nature parks in the north, rocky gorges of the Mullerthal region in the east and the Moselle river valley in the southeast. Its capital, Luxembourg City, is famed for its fortified medieval old town perched on sheer cliffs. It is the capital of the small European nation of the same name. Built amid deep gorges cut by the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers, it’s famed for its ruins of medieval fortifications. The vast Bock Casemates tunnel network encompasses a dungeon, prison and the Archaeological Crypt, considered the city’s birthplace. Along ramparts above, the Chemin de la Corniche promenade offers dramatic viewpoints.

The city centre occupies a picturesque site on a salient, perched high atop precipitous cliffs that drop into the narrow valleys of the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers, which find their confluence at Luxembourg City. The 70 m deep gorges cut by the rivers are spanned by many bridges and viaducts, including the Adolphe Bridge, the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge, and the Passerelle. Although Luxembourg City is not particularly large, its layout is complex, as the city is set on several levels, straddling hills and dropping into the two gorges.
n the Roman era, a fortified tower guarded the crossing of two Roman roads that met at the site of Luxembourg city. Through an exchange treaty with the abbey of Saint Maximin in Trier in 963, Siegfried I of the Ardennes acquired the feudal lands of Luxembourg. Siegfried built his castle, named Lucilinburhuc (small castle), on the Bock Fiels (rock).
The city, for reasons of its location and natural geography, has through history been a place of strategic military significance. The first fortifications were built as early as the 10th century.
In about 1340, new fortifications were built that stood until 1867.
In the 17th century, the first casemates were built; initially, Spain built 23 km of tunnels, starting in 1644] These were then enlarged under French rule by Marshal Vauban, and augmented again under Austrian rule in the 1730s and 1740s.
During the French Revolutionary Wars, the city was occupied by France twice: once, briefly, in 17923, and, later, after a seven-month siege. Luxembourg held out for so long under the French siege that French politician and military engineer Lazare Carnot called Luxembourg the best [fortress] in the world, except Gibraltar.
Tthe Austrian garrison eventually surrendered, and, as a consequence, Luxembourg was annexed into the French Republic as part of the département of Forêts, with Luxembourg City as its préfecture. Under the 1815 Treaty of Paris, which ended the Napoleonic Wars, Luxembourg City was placed under Prussian military control as a part of the German Confederation, although sovereignty passed to the House of Orange-Nassau.
After the Luxembourg Crisis, the 1867 Treaty of London required Luxembourg to dismantle the fortifications in Luxembourg City.
When, in 1890, Grand Duke William III died without any male heirs, the Grand Duchy passed out of Dutch hands, and into an independent line under Grand Duke Adolphe. Thus, Luxembourg, which had hitherto been independent in theory only, became a truly independent country, and Luxembourg City regained some of the importance that it had lost in 1867 by becoming the capital of a fully independent state.
Despite Luxembourg's best efforts to remain neutral in the First World War, it was occupied by Germany on 2 August 1914. On 30 August, Helmuth von Moltke moved his headquarters to Luxembourg City, closer to his armies in France in preparation for a swift victory. However, the victory never came, and Luxembourg would play host to the German high command for another four years. At the end of the occupation, Luxembourg City was the scene of an attempted communist revolution; on 9 November 1918, communists declared a socialist republic, but it lasted only a few hours.
In 1940, Germany occupied Luxembourg again. The Nazis were not prepared to allow Luxembourgers self-government, and gradually integrated Luxembourg into the Third Reich until it annexed the Grand Duchy, on 30 August 1942. Luxembourg City was liberated on 10 September 1944.

Luxembourg City, Luxembourg - Place de la Constitution (2018)
The Constitution Square was put up on the ancient Beck bastion (1644, 1685). The Gëlle Fra, a monument which is located on this square, was set up in 1923 to commemorate the Luxembourgers who perished in the First World War, today it sympolises freedom and resistance for the Luxembourg people.
From here you have a superb view over the Pétrusse Valley and the Adolphe Bridge.

Luxembourg: With Petrus Express descend to Grund
Petrus Valley separates city district Garer Quartierin. Throughout the valley there are two viaducts in the city called The Breck (Old Bridge) and Nei Breck (New Bridge). Pétrusse River (Luxembourg Péitruss , French Pétrusse) is a river flowing through Luxembourg city. It is formed by the confluence of Märelerbach and Zéissenger, and flows into the Alzette.
Petrus name comes from the Latin word Petrosa (stone), which is found along the river flow. 1933 River, however, flows through a conduit concrete. Bock promontory houses fortress of Luxembourg. This is rock and debris from the Bock casemates.
We can still see remnants of the so-called Bourbons-locks, which were built in 1728, to save the city from flooding.
The oldest part of the city, the district Grund, is in the valley carved by Petrus and is also the most picturesque
***********************************
