Pettah Market Colombo Sri Lanka
The biggest local market in Sri lanka
Main Street, Pettah, Colombo, Sri Lanka
This is Pettah's Main Street late on a Friday afternoon on Friday 21 July 2017. It is heavily represented by people who follow Islamic instructions and on a Friday afternoon it is probable that many of them have egressed from a mosque - some of them from the mosque on Main Street, Pettah you can glimpse at a distance in this video. As is the case in many locations in the developing countries the labourers work long hard hours for meagre pay. The rich in such a country reward themselves hugely for exploiting their inferiors so successfully for foreign interests, send their offspring to foreign institutions for education, live in luxury houses and possess expensive German motor cars.

Colombo 11 Pettah Sri Lanka
Pettah is one of Sri Lanka's busiest commercial areas, where a huge number of wholesale and retail shops, buildings and markets are located.
Pettah Market area, Colombo, Sri Lanka
This is a Tuesday afternoon in late April, 2017. All social classes go to Pettah and there is definitely something for everybody.

China Street, Pettah, Colombo, Sri Lanka
This is the second video of China Street from me on YouTube. For reasons that might or might not be connected to global-warming the climate in this tropical dubious paradise is getting hotter and hotter. People who have lived here all their lives tell me that they have never known it to be so hot at equivalent times of year; furthermore, some say that it is a different kind of heat insofar that the solar radiation seems to be more penetrating. Some Doomsayers say abroad that we will all be dead by 2030 owing to a possible Sixth Great Extinction going on (apparently, they claim) now.
FIRST TIME IN SRI LANKA - Best things to do in Colombo
It is our first time in Sri Lanka and what a beautiful country it is! We found the best things to do in Colombo city and will take you guys to see local Sri Lankan culture, street markets, and temples. Come along to see some of the most famous places in Sri Lanka!
We started off our Sri Lanka trip by taking a self guided Colombo city tour. Because it is our first time in Sri Lanka, we wanted to dive right into the local culture, so we headed to the Pettah district. The Pettah Market in Sri Lanka is a famous local street market in one of the oldest districts in all of Colombo city. When we arrived, the market was filled with people, vendors, street food, and signage all over. Talk about sensory overload! If you are looking to experience the real Sri Lankan culture, don’t miss visiting Pettah during your Colombo travel day.
Next up, we remained in the Pettah district and visited Jami Ul Alfar Mosque, otherwise known as the Red Mosque of Sri Lanka. This place was absolutely stunning and is one of the oldest mosques built in Colombo Sri Lanka dating back to 1905. The candy stripe appeal is what brought us there, but the architecture and history is fantastic as well. Although tourists aren’t able to visit much of the mosque, we were happy to visit and take a look around.
Heading outside of Pettah, we rode our first Sri Lankan tuk tuk to Colombo 02. Although Colombo is one of the biggest cities in Sri Lanka, the ride only took us about 15 minutes from Pettah to Colombo 02. When you come to Colombo Sri Lanka, don’t miss the fantastic buddhist temples which are so different from any we’ve seen across Southeast Asia. We visited both Gangaramaya Temple and and Seema Malakaya. They were beautiful.
If you’re wondering what to do in Colombo Sri Lanka, this video will serve as a great guide for things you can see in just one day. Many travelers skip over Colombo while visiting Sri Lanka, but it has some of the best places in Sri Lanka in terms of culture and liveliness. If you’re interested in more Sri Lanka travel vlog videos, you’re in luck! We have a full month of videos coming showing you the best cities in Sri Lanka along with the most stunning beaches in Southern Sri Lanka.

PETTAH MARKET COLOMBO (plus Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque) | Sri Lanka Travel
Pettah Market in Colombo is insane! We thoroughly enjoyed visiting this historical market with its bustling streets and stalls crammed full of goodies. We also popped into the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque to take it it’s unique architecture and colouring.
For lunch, we escaped the madness and enjoyed our first Indian-style Thali.
Throughout the day we did manage to squeeze in some successful shopping, though who knows if our bargaining skills were any good!

Bargaining for KNOCKOFFS in SRI LANKA. $3 or less fake MARKET SPREE in Colombo (Pettah) & Kandy ????????
The sport of bargaining makes for some fun banter, and in markets with no fixed prices it's a must if you want to pay a fair price for the goods that you buy.
Some may ask why it's worth my time haggling for the difference between a few pennies on a pair of knockoff Puma socks. Well anything is worth your time if you enjoy doing it.
I found that all the best deals in Sri Lanka were in Colombo in and around the Pettah area. In the largest market in Kandy the sellers were pitching their prices very high and weren't prepared to negotiate much.
In Kandy they were trying to sell fake Sri Lanka cricket jerseys for 1,800 rupees when the original one in the department stores costs the same. The same jerseys were on sale in Pettah for a starting price of 750 and could definitely be negotiated down from there.

Dam Street, Pettah, Colombo Sri Lanka
My Grand-Uncle Mohideen used to say that when he was a young man he was wrestling in Dam Street; that must have been in the 1920s and 1930s; be that as it may, you will notice that these denizens of an urban ant-heap are busily about their daily businesses oblivious to the wider world around them. The argument about climate change and the prospect of a flash point erupting into a nuclear war concern them not. Their g-d or g-ds or whatever deities they follow or none at all deal with the outside world while they deal with the challenges of narrowly circumscribed lives. Low pay, hard work and early deaths are the fate of many or most of these ants. As in the case of most of the liberated ex-colonies the political leaders are best at feathering their own nests and worst at looking after the humans you see in this short video. Yesterday and tomorrow are the same as today. Meanwhile their leaders fly around the world on first class tickets and lodge at five and seven star hotels. I could dwell infinitely long on this subject but am stopping now.
PETTAH MARKET - Colombo - Sri Lanka (4K)
Pettah Market is one of the Colombo's busiest place where a mix of market vendors selling anything from fresh vegetables, meats, seafood to clothing and electric goods #pettah #pettahmarket #colombo
Prince Street, Pettah, Colombo, Sri Lanka
This is the very late afternoon during a weekday. The sun is about to set but Pettah has plenty of life in it.
China Street, Pettah, Colombo, Sri Lanka
Life is tough and brutal in the lower echelons of a Third World country. These people work long, hard hours for ridiculously low pay (even by Sri Lankan standards) with little hope of improving their conditions. The environment is likened to a human ant heap with little empathy or 'humanity' for 'the other.' The policy makers are mostly on the take and little of that ends up in the hands of the people you see in this video.
Pettah, Colombo, Sri Lanka
This is the afternoon of Wednesday, 31 October 2018. It matters not to these people whether or not this is All Hallows Eve or whether or not the spirits of the dead walk abroad on this night before the saints drive them away for another year on All Hallows Day. They are most of them Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims anyway. What does matter is that it is the end of another hard working day in Colombo and all the small concerns of a petty trader. This is the Third World and it is a dog-eat-dog atmosphere. those at the top of the heap are King Rats. May G-d have mercy of their souls.
