Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium Release Day - October 19, 2013
200 people joined Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium staff and volunteers at St. Phillips Beach on October 19, 2013 for the animal release. Being a seasonal aquarium, DFO approved permits which allowed us to release our collection right back to where we collected them from. Sea stars, urchins, sand dollars, fish, snails and lobster were all released with the help of local children and families! Thank you to everyone who came out. See you June 8, 2014 for our grand re-opening.

Melanie Knight - How a mini idea can make massive change - Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium
Melanie Knight - Catalyst for Curiosity – How a mini idea can make massive change (Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium; miniaqua.org/) - - presentation at CaNOE's 2015 Ocean Literacy in Canada Conference.
Abstract: In order to conserve our oceans, we need to first know what’s down there – we need to see it. Melanie Knight, Founder of the Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium (PHMA) and CEO of Ocean to Eye Level Consulting, describes in her TEDx talk the power of seeing the ocean up close and how it is critical first step towards ocean literacy and conservation. Often invisible, the life that lives beneath the big blue blanket, once experienced, is the catalyst for curiosity. Curiosity sparked in a place where we can have our questions answered, can lead to deep caring about the subject matter. And with caring there’s conservation, and ultimately hope. Based on this step ladder approach, Melanie brought the successful Ucluelet Mini Aquarium model, from the west coast to the east coast. This catch-and-release model is now one of three mini aquariums across Canada, with more in the works around the world. Melanie believes this work has the potential to foster ocean curiosity for kids all over the world.

Not too graceful a start to the Trans-Canada Trek, but it did the job. I could have done without taking an accidental swig of the water later, though...

Ocean to eye level | Melanie Knight | TEDxRenfrewCollingwood
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Fall in love with the oceans through the eyes of marine biologist Melanie Knight. Go eye to eye with a live sea star and just like that, take the first step towards global ocean conservation. Melanie shares how meeting a sea slug started her on her own journey to conservation and compelled her start a catch-and-release aquarium in Petty Harbour, Newfoundland.
Upon meeting her first “nudibranch” or sea slug, Melanie Knight gave a high-pitched squeal of excitement and still exhibits this response whenever she spots one scuba diving. She splits her time between Canada’s edges – the far west coast in Ucluelet, British Columbia and Petty Harbour, Newfoundland – helping create hands-on, catch-and-release “Mini Aquariums”. Melanie is the Founder of the Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium in Petty Harbour, Newfoundland, and was drawn back to the Rock after completing her BSc in Marine Biology from Memorial University of Newfoundland. For the past 10 years, Melanie has been working with the largest and the smallest aquariums in Canada to foster curiosity for the underwater world. Her mission now is to bring the ocean to eye level worldwide. Melanie is a marine biologist, speaker, consultant and trainer. She lives in Vancouver with her husband and K9.
